Adkins Hobby Jack Heat Press

Operators Manual

1. Important Safety Instructions

When using your Hobby Jack heat press, basic safety precautions should always be followed:

  1. Use the Hobby Jack heat press only for its intended purpose: manipulating fabrics and transferring designs.
  2. Do not immerse the heat press, power cable, or plug in water or other liquids to prevent electric shock.
  3. This heat press is not designed for use by children or individuals with physical, sensory, or mental impairments unless supervised or instructed by a responsible person.
  4. Children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the heat press.
  5. The heat press is not intended for operation by external timers or separate remote control systems.
  6. Always set the temperature control to 0 (zero) before plugging or unplugging. Disconnect by grasping the plug, not the power lead.
  7. Keep the power lead away from hot surfaces. Allow the heat press to cool completely before storing and disconnect the power lead when not in use.
  8. Always disconnect the heat press from the electrical outlet when not in use.
  9. Do not operate with a damaged power lead or if the unit has been dropped or damaged. For repairs, contact a qualified electrical engineer to avoid electric shock.
  10. Do not leave the heat press unattended while connected or while heat pressing.
  11. Burns can occur from touching hot metal parts. Use caution when opening and closing the heat press.
  12. Use and rest the heat press on a firm, flat, and stable surface.
  13. Do not use if the heat press has been dropped or shows signs of damage.
  14. Never bend the power lead when using or storing the heat press, as this can damage the device.
  15. For non-rewireable plugs, ensure the fuse cover is refitted after replacing the fuse. Do not use the plug if the cover is lost or damaged.
  16. Before use, remove all packaging and loose labels. Leave warning stickers in place.
  17. Ensure the heat press is situated within easy reach during operation, with sufficient space to prevent trapping points.
  18. When lowering the heat plate, it is recommended to use both hands.
  19. Operate the heat press only in adequate lighting conditions.
  20. The appliance is designed for use in temperatures between 5-40°C (41-104°F) and humidity of 20-80%.

2. Special Instructions

To avoid circuit overload, do not operate another high wattage appliance on the same circuit.

Connecting to Power

  1. Before switching on, ensure your electricity supply voltage matches the rating plate.
  2. If the appliance has a non-rewireable plug, ensure the fuse cover is refitted after fuse replacement. The plug must not be used if the cover is lost or damaged.
  3. Ensure the replacement fuse cover color matches the fuse marking. If the plug needs changing, fit an appropriate plug following wiring instructions. Dispose of damaged plugs safely.
  4. Read the following instructions carefully before connecting to the mains.
  5. For safety, site the heat press close to a power outlet for easy access.

Mains (AC) Operation

The Hobby Jack heat press is designed for 230V~50Hz operation only. Other power sources may damage the unit.

Wire colors: BLUE = NEUTRAL, BROWN = LIVE, GREEN + YELLOW = EARTH.

IMPORTANT: If wire colors do not match terminal markings, proceed with caution:

A diagram shows the plug wiring with:

If a 13 Amp (BS 1363) plug is used, a 13 Amp fuse must be fitted. Ensure a 13 Amp fuse is fitted in the plug, adapter, or main distribution board.

Caution

Disconnect from the outlet before removing the cover. No user-serviceable parts inside. Refer servicing to a qualified engineer.

Safety Precautions

  1. Do not expose power connectors to rain or moisture.
  2. Mains supply: 230 Volts~50 Hz with a supply rated for at least 13 Amps (AC only).
  3. If the electrical supply is interrupted, immediately disconnect the plug. A resumption of power could cause the machine to heat up unattended.
  4. If replacing the fuse, use a Glass fuse rated at 8A 250V (Adkins Part No. SCC27 or equivalent).

3. Using Your Press

Familiarize yourself with the parts of the press before use.

Connecting Your Hobby Jack Heat Press

Use only the supplied power cord and lead. Using a different lead will invalidate your warranty and could lead to personal injury.

  1. Gently lower the heat plate.
  2. Connect the press to the power supply and switch on at the outlet. Warning: only use the lead supplied.

Preparations

Follow the manufacturer's/supplier's advice for temperature, time, and ventilation when heat applying/sealing. Failure to do so could invalidate your warranty.

Selecting the Temperature

  1. If completing varied work, start with the lowest heat setting.
  2. Working in order of heat setting reduces waiting time and the chance of overheating.
  3. Plug into the outlet and switch on the supply.
  4. Close the heat plate using the handle, but do not clamp shut.
  5. Select the desired temperature using the dial. Refer to the diagram for temperature settings.

A circular dial shows temperature settings from 0 to 10, with applications indicated:

Max temp: 220°C (428°F)

Heat Applying/Sealing Procedure

  1. Release the handle catch to open the press.
  2. Position the transfer in the desired location over the material. Take care not to touch the heat plate.
  3. Lower the heat plate using both hands, taking care to close the handle catch.
  4. After the required time has elapsed (as notified by the manufacturer), release the handle catch and raise the heat plate to the fully open position. Take care not to touch the heat plate.

Tip: Use a stop watch for accurate time keeping.

Cleaning

  1. Ensure the heat press is unplugged and the heat plate has completely cooled before cleaning.
  2. Deposits on the heat plate can be removed with a damp cloth or non-abrasive liquid detergent.
  3. Avoid scratching the heat plate with steel wool or metallic objects.
  4. Other parts can be cleaned with a damp cloth and then wiped dry.

Tips and Advice

  1. If fabric composition is unknown, test temperature on a hidden corner, starting low and gradually increasing.
  2. Do not heat press areas with perspiration or other marks, as the heat will fix the stains.
  3. To avoid marking silk, woollen, or synthetic garments, use a Teflon® sheet or baking parchment.

Please Note

  1. If the power lead is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, their service agent, or a qualified person to avoid electrical hazard.
  2. Service personnel require supervision or instruction before undertaking repairs.
  3. Do not let children or pets play with the heat press.
  4. Keep the heat press and power lead out of reach of children and pets when live or cooling down.
