1 Introduction
1.1 Cause
HMI projects are created by different colleagues and departments, leading to individual visualizations with varying appearances. The goal of an HMI template is to ensure consistent HMI configurations, thereby increasing recognition value for customers and operators. Key requirements for HMI templates include a new, attractive design, standardization, harmonization, an identical look and feel, and a uniform navigation structure.
1.2 Overview
This document describes the new HMI template library and facilitates its use. It aims to provide a standardized approach for HMI configurations.
The HMI style and set designs are binding for the template.
1.3 HMI Template Suite
The template aligns with the design of the "HMI Template Suite" (Article ID: 91174767), which offers a complete operating and navigation concept as a finished HMI template. For extensive HMI visualizations, this suite can be used instead of the KMT template library. Advantages include a complete navigation and operating concept, deeper navigation levels, and integration of SiVArc for automated visualization generation. The application example (Entry ID: 91174767) is suitable for integrating fully developed functions as libraries into customer projects or for HMI project planning of complete systems requiring extensive navigation and operating options.

2.4 Creating an HMI project with the HMI template library
This section details how to use and customize the template library.
Requirement
- Existing TIA Portal project.
- TIA Portal project languages must include at least English (USA) and German.
2.4.1 Open template
1. Open the library "LTemplateKMT.zip".
2. HMI device templates are sorted by WinCC version and display size. Copy the desired HMI device from the library to your project. Configured operating devices are in the "00_Device" folder.
If your operating device is not available, select a comparable device with a similar resolution. Use "Replace device" and scaling settings to adjust. Further information on resolutions is in section 2.4.s.
2.4.2 Adjusting navigation for a project
The template allows an overview page and up to five additional navigation buttons. To improve clarity and avoid errors, remove unused navigation buttons.
Procedure:
1. In the HMI device, open the template "TemplateSubNav".
2. In the "TemplateSubNav" template, delete unneeded buttons from the lower bar.
3. Delete the corresponding HMI images from the project.
4. Assign descriptive names to the remaining buttons and screens.
2.4.3 Adjusting project names
1. Open "Tools > Project texts".
2. On the "Tasks" tab, open the "Find and replace" option.
3. Use the following terms: 'ApplicationName' -> English project title, 'ApplicationName' -> German project title.
2.4.4 Updating the QR code on the Start page
A QR code can be placed on the start page for quick website access via mobile devices. For Siemens Industry Online Support examples, it can link to documentation or operating instructions. The current QR code links to the Industry Online Support homepage; exchange it as needed. The QR code size is 91x91 px.
Advantage: Quick access to project documentation from a mobile device.
2.4.5 Adjusting the overview screen of the application
The start image is "10_Overview". Adapt this overview page to your application.
The "10_Overview" page has a design with two blocks: the first for motivation/introduction, and the second for operation details (e.g., button sequences).
Procedure:
1. Add a short description of your application and explain its functionality.
2. If the operation is self-explanatory, remove the right block.
For versions without a functional description, an overview screen can be used instead.
2.5 Efficient engineering (Tips and tricks)
Suggestions for achieving a high level of recognition in HMI projects, using library objects and adhering to design guidelines.
2.5.1 Application
Project HMI images in the "02_ApplicationName" folder.
Existing images are linked to navigation buttons. Add new HMI screens from "01_Examples > 01_Screens > 00_newScreen". These screens contain predefined layers and background colors.
2.5.2 HMI style
HMI styles define a unique style for HMI objects, covering many configuration tasks. Deviations are possible in special cases. Naming conventions vary by application field.
Designation | Function |
---|---|
".ExampleStyle" | Style objects with a prefix "." (dot) are for sample project planning. |
"ExampleStyle" | Style objects without a prefix are for the template. |
The "styleTemplate" HMI style defines standard object designs, including button styles (Figure 2-22), text styles (Figure 2-23), and rectangle styles/colors (Figure 2-24).
Object | Normal font | Bold font |
---|---|---|
small font (15 px) /19 | .txtSmall | .btxtSmall |
normal font (19 px) / 23 | .txtMedium | .btxtMedium |
large font (23 px) /27 | .txtLarge | .btxtLarge |
2.5.3 Add new HMI screen
An empty HMI image with template properties is stored in the library. To add a new HMI screen, drag the "00_newScreen" template from the library into your HMI device.
2.5.4 Configuration deviating from the defined HMI style
Predefined HMI styles may not cover all WinCC Comfort objects. For objects without a predefined style, use an existing style as a template: select the style, then deactivate it for the object. The object retains the style's design, allowing customization.
Configure in the same design as the template.
2.5.5 Darken screen
The HMI variable "ScreenInactive" can darken images, for example, when a pop-up is called. Setting this variable accordingly projects all HMI images with a darkened appearance.
Variable | Property |
---|---|
"ScreenInactive" = true | Screen darkened |
"ScreenInactive" = false | Screen normal |
This effect is achieved by a semitransparent screen made visible by the "ScreenInactive" variable.
2.5.6 Using the Layer view
HMI images in the "02_ApplicationName" folder typically have the following layout structure:
Structuring by categories (layers) allows for more effective object changes through deactivation of individual levels.
2.5.7 Other navigation options
Applications can be configured for up to five HMI screens. If more are needed, multiple images can be created within a module and switched via navigation elements. Templates for this are found in "01_Examples > 02_Objects > Frame > Navigation".
2.5.8 Additional text in the title bar
If navigation button text is insufficient, a subtitle can be added to the title bar.
Procedure:
1. Open the HMI screen where the subtitle is to be added.
2. Open the "LTemplateKMT" library, drag the "txtSubTitle" object group from "00_Elements" to the top of the image, and change the texts (EN/DE).
3. Ensure sufficient distance between the subtitle and the main title.
2.6 WinCC Professional project
This section covers the implementation of the template for WinCC Professional (1920x1080 px), noting differences like the use of image windows instead of HMI styles and pop-up images.
2.6.1 In-screen window technology concept
In WinCC Professional, navigation is handled via different image windows, unlike WinCC Comfort's "image templates" and pop-up images.
In-screen window hierarchy:
- All HMI pictures are called via "1_TemplateGeneral" in "WindowMain", which includes the title and status bars.
- "WindowApplication" in "WindowMain" is called for the application.
- "2_TemplateApplication" screen contains the in-screen window and navigation bar.
- Settings are in "WindowSettings", and Online Support/SITRAIN info is in "WindowSupport".
- Messages and Diagnostics are called directly in "WindowMain".
The WinCC Professional template design is indistinguishable from other templates in operation, look, and feel.
WindowNote: An additional in-screen window, "WindowNote", is located above "WindowMain" in "1_TemplateGeneral". It replaces "PopUp screen" in WinCC Comfort and is used for language changes and "End Runtime" notes. For other content, configure a new HMI image and place a script on a button to activate it.
2.6.2 Differences in the configuration for WinCC Comfort
HMI styles: HMI styles cannot be used in WinCC Professional. To achieve a uniform look & feel, copy pre-configured objects from the library, such as "BasicStyleTemplateObjects" from "01_Examples".
Settings: Settings pages are not adopted in the WinCC Classic template; functions are handled via Windows functions or WinCC board tools.
Diagnostic functions: The WinCC template includes "GSC Diagnostics" and "Channel Diagnostics" instead of a dedicated diagnostics page. These can be opened as pop-ups in the slide menu.
2.6.3 Adjusting and configuring the WinCC Professional template
Adjusting project names:
1. Open the "1_TemplateGeneral" screen.
2. Change the default text of the "txtTitleBar" object.
Adjusting navigation:
1. Open the "2_TemplateSubNav" screen.
2. In the Inspector window, select "Properties > Texts".
3. Change the texts of the navigation buttons.
4. Delete any unneeded navigation buttons in "2_TemplateSubNav".
5. Delete corresponding HMI images from the project.
Updating the QR code on the Start page: Refer to Chapter 2 for the procedure, similar to WinCC Comfort.
Adjusting the overview screen of the application: Refer to section 2 for the procedure, similar to WinCC Comfort.
3 WinCC V7 template
This section describes the WinCC V7.5 single-user template, which is based on the TIA portal templates but has differences in project planning implementation. It is designed for demo and test applications at 1600x900 px resolution.
3.1 Function overview
3.1.1 Title bar and status bar
The title bar displays the title, and the status bar shows the operator, time, and current language, with diagnostic display on the right.
Status bar functions: 1. Title display, 2. Opening the Slide-in Menu, 3. Log user on/off, 4. Display time, 5. Set language, 6. Diagnostic display.
User | Password |
---|---|
"siemens" | "siemens" |
"administrator" | "administrator" |
3.1.2 Slide-in menu
The slide-in menu provides access to functions like Application, Alarms, Support, and Diagnostics.
Functions: 1. Open application example (Application/start page), 2. Open messages/alarms, 3. Open Support (Links to Online Support and Sitrain), 4. Display GSC diagnosis (control, pop-up), 5. Display GSC Runtime (Control, Pop-up), 6. Display channel diagnosis (Control, Pop-up), 7. End runtime.
Clicking a menu button or a free area within the menu closes it.
3.1.3 Navigation bar
The navigation bar allows switching between projected plant displays. Navigation bars are located at the right edge of the screen, indicated by numbers (1 to 3). A total of 15 buttons are available across three navigation bars.
Project planning of the switchover:
No. | WinCC screen |
---|---|
1 | SubNavigation1.Pdl |
2 | SubNavigation2.Pdl |
3 | SubNavigation3.Pdl |
3.2 Screen call concept
The WinCC V7 template uses an image window layer, differing from TIA portal templates. Overlapping elements and functions are configured in the "1_MainPage.Pdl" screen. The "01_MainPage.Pdl" screen contains windows for diagnostic display and other screen windows.
Screen window name | Function |
---|---|
WindowMain | Display of the operating screen ("11_Module1.Pdl"). |
WindowMenu | Slide-in menu display ("SlideInMenu.Pdl"). |
WindowSubNav | Display of the lower navigation bar ("SubNavigation1.Pdl"). |
WindowNote | Display of a notification, e.g., note on terminating the runtime ("Note_StopRuntime.Pdl"). |
3.2.1 Picture navigation
Use navigation bar buttons to move between HMI images displayed in "WindowMain". Three navigation bars are available on the right, offering a total of 15 buttons. The active bar determines which "SubNavigation" screen is shown in "WindowSubNav".
3.2.2 Project Planning
HMI images "11_Module1" to "15_Module5" are pre-connected for "Module 15". To extend this:
1. Open "SubNavigation2.Pdl".
2. Open the "Mouse click" event of any button.
3. Activate the commented-out line and change "11_Module" to the desired image name.
Highlight bar: Animations highlight active buttons using the "stateSubNavigation" variable.
Project Planning: For each page call, set "stateSubNavigation" to the respective value (1-15). Values 1-5 are for the first control bar, 11-15 for the third.
3.3 Differences compared to TIA Portal Templates
HMI style: HMI design templates are not usable in WinCC. For a uniform look & feel, use pre-planned objects and designs. Graphics Designer provides "Template_Objects1.Pdl" (Lines, IO Fields, Texts, Buttons) and "Template_Objects2.Pdl" (Visualization examples, switches, pointer instruments).
Settings: Settings pages are not adopted in the WinCC Classic template; functions are handled via Windows functions or WinCC board tools.
Diagnostic functions: The WinCC template includes "GSC Diagnostics" and "Channel Diagnostics" instead of a diagnostics page. These can be opened as pop-ups in the slide menu.
3.4 Creating a project with the WinCC template
Procedure: Open WinCC Project, update computer name, open WinCC Graphics Designer, and open screen "01_MainPage.Pdl".
The "01_MainPage.Pdl" image contains image windows for navigation elements (Slide-in Menu, Navigation Menu) and diagnostic controls. The "WindowMain" image window calls the operating screen.
Adjusting the title: Change the project title at the top of the screen.
Adjusting navigation:
1. Open "SubNavigation1.Pdl" in Graphics Designer.
2. Adapt page call scripts if necessary (see section 3.2.2).
3. Repeat for "SubNavigation2.Pdl" and "SubNavigation3.Pdl" if needed.
Writing an application: System screens are called in "01_MainPage" via "WindowMain" (1600x688 px). Configure your application in "11_Module1.Pdl", which serves as the start screen. All pictures are connected to the lower navigation.
For uniform design, use objects from "Template_Objects.Pdl" and "Template_Objects2.Pdl". Copy and paste desired objects.
Unused WinCC images ("1X_ModuleX.Pdl") can be removed; update references in the bottom navigation.
3.5 General information
Existing icon images are stored in the "Graphics" folder under "/icons", e.g., "\TemplateKMT_WinCCV75\GraCS\icons".
