Toniebox Connection Troubleshooting: Using a Mobile Hotspot

Understanding the 'Hedgehog' Code Word

The 'Hedgehog' code word indicates a connection issue between the Toniebox and the Wi-Fi network or router it is trying to connect to.

Solution: Use a mobile hotspot or a different Wi-Fi network.

If you are using a mobile hotspot, you will need a separate device (like another phone, computer, or tablet) to follow the setup process. You cannot use the same device that is creating the mobile hotspot for the setup.

Creating a Hotspot with an iPhone or iPad

  1. Step 1

Open the 'Settings' app and tap 'Personal Hotspot' (iPhone) or 'Cellular' (iPad).

  2. Step 2

Tap the toggle next to 'Allow Others to Join' to activate the mobile hotspot.

  3. Step 3

On newer iPhones (iPhone 12 and newer), you may also see an option named 'Maximize Compatibility'. If present, ensure it is toggled on.

  4. Step 4

The hotspot password is displayed below the 'Allow Others to Join' toggle. You can change this password if desired. The hotspot network name is also shown within quotation marks (' ') in the paragraph below the Wi-Fi Password.

The second shows the Personal Hotspot screen with the 'Allow Others to Join' toggle. The third shows the Personal Hotspot screen with the 'Maximize Compatibility' toggle option.]

Creating a Hotspot with an Android Smartphone or Tablet

  1. Step 1

Open the 'Settings' app and tap 'Connections'.

  2. Step 2

    Tap 'Mobile Hotspot and Tethering'.

  3. Step 3

    Tap 'Mobile Hotspot'.

  4. Step 4

Tap to toggle the Mobile Hotspot 'On'.

  5. Step 5

Ensure the 'Band' is set to '2.4 GHz' and not '5 GHz'.

  6. Step 6

The hotspot network name and password are shown below the 'On' toggle. You can change the password if preferred.

[Description of Android Settings screenshots: The first shows the main Settings menu with options like Connections and Mobile Hotspot and Tethering. The second shows the Mobile Hotspot and Tethering screen. The third shows the Mobile Hotspot screen with the 'On' toggle. The fourth shows the Mobile Hotspot screen with the Band selection set to 2.4 GHz and fields for Network name and Password.]

Connecting Your Toniebox

Once the hotspot is activated or you are near a different Wi-Fi network, follow these steps:

  1. Resetting the Toniebox

Place the Toniebox on its charging station (connected to power). Turn both the Toniebox and station upside down so the ears point downwards. Pinch and hold both Toniebox ears simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds until an audio tone is heard. Turn the Toniebox upright and remove it from the charging station briefly, then place it back on.

  2. Using the mytonies App

    1. Step 1

Open the mytonies app. Log in or create a Tonie-Account. Tap the red plus (+) sign next to 'Toniebox'.

    2. Step 2

Tap 'Start Setup Process' at the bottom of the screen.

    3. Step 3

If connecting via a mobile hotspot, ensure it is activated on your other device. Tap 'Continue'.

    4. Step 4

Enter your Toniebox ID (8-digit code found on the bottom of the Toniebox). Ensure the Toniebox is not on the charger. Tap 'Continue'.

    5. Step 5

Name your Toniebox and tap 'Continue'.

    6. Step 6

Place the Toniebox on the charger. Pinch and hold both ears for about 5 seconds until the LED flashes blue and an audio chime is heard. Wait about 20 seconds for a second audio chime, then tap 'Continue'.

    7. Step 7

The Toniebox will attempt to connect to your smartphone. Allow this connection. You may see slightly different messages based on your device (iPhone or Android).

    8. Step 8

Select your mobile hotspot or Wi-Fi network from the list of available networks.

    9. Step 9

Enter your mobile hotspot/Wi-Fi password, ensuring correct capitalization. Tap 'Continue'.

    10. Step 10

Wait for the Toniebox to establish a Wi-Fi connection. This may take a minute or two, possibly accompanied by sounds or beeps.

    11. Step 11

Upon successful connection and update download, the Toniebox LED will turn solid green, and a welcome message will play. The screen may display 'Success. Your Toniebox is now set up!'. Even without this message, a solid green LED indicates a successful connection.

[Description of mytonies app screenshots: The first shows the app's main screen with tabs for Collection, Toniebox, Tonies, and Content, and a '+' icon to add a Toniebox. The second shows the 'Toniebox Setup' screen detailing requirements like a Toniebox, charging station, Wi-Fi router, and access information. The third shows the 'Toniebox Setup' screen prompting for the Toniebox ID. The fourth shows the screen for naming the Toniebox. The fifth shows the 'Connecting' status with the LED flashing blue. The sixth shows the 'Choose your Wifi' screen listing available networks. The seventh shows the password entry screen. The eighth shows the 'Connecting to Wifi' status. The ninth shows the 'Success. Your Toniebox is now set up!' confirmation screen.]

  3. Using the Alternative Connection Process

    1. Step 1

Turn the Toniebox on. Pinch both ears for about 5 seconds until the LED turns blue and an audio tone is heard.

    2. Step 2

Wait approximately 20 seconds for a second audio tone.

    3. Step 3

On your device, go to Wi-Fi settings and connect to the 'Toniebox-####' network.

    4. Step 4

Wait for the connection to establish. You may see a message stating 'This connection does not have access to the internet'; select 'ignore' or 'continue anyway'.

    5. Step 5

Open a web browser on the same device and navigate to 192.168.1.1.

    6. Step 6

A Toniebox setup page will appear, prompting you to select the language.

    7. Step 7

Choose your language and follow the on-screen instructions to connect to your mobile hotspot or Wi-Fi network.

    8. Step 8

A successful setup results in a solid green Toniebox LED and a greeting message.

    9. Step 9

Once connected, place Tonies on the box. Content downloads will be indicated by a blinking blue LED. A solid green LED and audio chime after download mean the Toniebox no longer needs Wi-Fi for that specific content. You can then turn off the hotspot or move away from the network.

    10. Step 10

Connecting to your home Wi-Fi: If the initial setup was successful, you can now connect to your home Wi-Fi network. Follow the same steps, but at Step 8, select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password. A solid green LED indicates success.
