1 About This User Guide

2 Get Started

Keep your phone up to date

Your phone's software

Keep your phone up to date and accept available software updates to get new and improved features for your phone. Software updates can also improve the performance of your phone.

Parts and connectors, Magnetism

Do not connect products that generate signal, as this may damage the device. Do not connect any voltage source to the audio connector. If you connect any external device or headset to the audio connector other than those approved for use with this device, pay special attention to the volume level.

The device parts are magnetic. Metallic materials may be attracted to this device. Do not keep credit cards or other cards with magnetic stripes near the device for a long time, as this may damage your cards.

INSERT THE SIM AND MEMORY CARDS

Insert the cards

1. Put your fingernail in the seam between the back cover and the display, bend the back cover open, and remove it.

2. Slide the nano-SIM in slot 1 with the contact area face down.

3. If you have a dual-SIM phone, slide the second SIM in slot 2.

4. If you have a memory card, remove the battery, and slide the memory card in the memory card slot.

5. Put back the battery.

6. Put back the back cover.

Use only original nano-SIM cards. Use of incompatible SIM cards may damage the card or the device, and may corrupt data stored on the card.

Charge your phone

Charge the battery

1. Plug a compatible charger into a wall outlet.

2. Connect the cable to your phone.

Your phone supports USB micro-B cable. You can also charge your phone from a computer using a USB cable, but it will take longer.

If the battery is completely discharged, it may take several minutes for the charging indicator to appear.

Turn your phone on and set it up

Turn on your phone

When you turn on your phone for the first time, the phone guides you through setting up your network connection and phone settings.

  1. Press and hold the power key.
  2. Select your language and region.
  3. Follow the instructions shown on your phone.
Transfer data from your previous phone

You can transfer data from an old phone to your new phone using your Google account.

To back up your old phone's data to your Google account, see the user guide of your old phone.

Restore app settings from your previous Android™ phone

If your previous phone was Android and you had set up the backup of data to your Google account, you can restore your app settings and passwords.

  1. Tap Settings > Accounts > Add account > Google.
  2. Select the data you want to restore to your new phone. As soon as your phone connects to the internet, the synchronization process will start automatically.
Turn off your phone

To turn off your phone, press and hold the power key and the volume up key together, and select Power off.

Tip: If you want to turn off your phone by pressing the power key, go to Settings > System > Gestures > Press & hold power button and tap Turn on Power button long press to turn off.

USE THE TOUCH SCREEN

Important: Avoid scratching the touch screen. Never use an actual pen, pencil, or other sharp object on the touch screen.

Tap and hold to drag an item

Press and hold your finger on the item for a few seconds, then slide your finger from one side of the screen to the other.

Swipe

Slide your finger across the screen in the direction you want.

Scroll a long list or menu

Quickly slide your finger up or down on the screen and lift your finger. To stop scrolling, tap the screen.

Zoom in or out

Place 2 fingers on an item, such as a map, photo, or web page, and slide your fingers apart or together.

Navigate using gestures

To switch to gesture navigation, tap Settings > System > Gestures > System navigation > Gesture navigation.

  • To see all your apps, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
  • To go to the home screen, swipe up from the bottom of the screen. The app you were in stays open in the background.
  • To see which apps you have open, swipe up from the bottom of the screen without lifting your finger, until you see the apps, and then lift your finger. To switch to another open app, tap the app. To close all open apps, tap Clear all.
  • To go back to the previous screen, swipe from the left or right edge of the screen. Your phone remembers all the apps and websites you've visited since the last time your screen was locked.

Navigate with the keys

  • To see all your apps, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
  • To go to the home screen, tap the home key. The app you were in stays open in the background.
  • To see which apps you have open, tap [Recents icon]. To switch to another open app, swipe right and tap the app. To close all the open apps, tap CLEAR ALL.
  • To go back to the previous screen you were in, tap [Back icon]. Your phone remembers all the apps and websites you've visited since the last time your screen was locked.

3 Secure your phone

Lock or unlock your phone

Lock your phone

If you don't want accidental calls to be made when your phone is in your pocket or bag, you can lock the keys and screen.

To lock your keys and screen, press the power key.

Unlock keys and screen

Press the power key and swipe up on the screen. If prompted, provide additional credentials.

Keep your phone secure with a screen lock

You can set your phone to ask for authentication when unlocking the screen.

Set a screen lock

  1. Tap Settings > Security > Screen lock.
  2. Choose the type of lock and follow the instructions shown on your phone.

Secure your phone with face unlock

Set up face recognition

  1. Tap Settings > Security > Face unlock.
  2. Choose the backup unlock method you want to use for the lock screen and follow the instructions shown on your phone.

Keep your eyes open and make sure your face is fully visible and not covered by anything, such as a hat or glasses.

Note: Using your face to unlock your phone is less secure than using a pattern or password. Your phone can be unlocked by someone who looks like you. Face unlock may not work in low-light conditions or when there is backlighting.

Unlock your phone with face unlock

To unlock your phone, just turn on the screen and look at the front camera.

If face recognition is not working correctly and you are unable to sign in using an alternative method to recover or reset your phone, your phone will need to be serviced. Additional charges may apply, and all personal data on your phone may be erased. For more information, contact an authorized service provider near you or your phone dealer.

Find your lost phone

Locate or lock your phone

If your phone is lost, you can remotely locate, lock, or erase it if you have signed in to a Google account. Find My Device is turned on by default for phones associated with a Google account.

Your lost phone must be:

  • Turned on
  • Signed in to a Google account
  • Connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi
  • Visible on Google Play
  • Location turned on
  • Find My Device turned on

When Find My Device connects to your phone, you can see the phone's location and receive a notification on the phone.

  1. On a computer/tablet or phone connected to the internet, open android.com/find and sign in to your Google account.
  2. If you have more than one phone, click the lost phone at the top of the screen.
  3. On the map, see where the phone is. The location is approximate and may not be accurate.

If your device cannot be found, Find My Device will show its last known location, if available. To lock or erase your phone, follow the instructions on the website.

4 Basic facts

PERSONALIZE YOUR PHONE

Change your wallpaper

Tap Settings > Wallpaper.

Change your phone's ringtone

Tap Settings > Sound > Phone ringtone SIM1 or Phone ringtone SIM2 and choose a tone.

Change your message notification sound

Tap Settings > Sound > General notification sound.

Notifications

Use the notification panel

When you receive new notifications, such as messages or missed calls, icons appear at the top of the screen. To learn more about notifications, swipe down from the top of the screen. To close the panel, swipe up on the screen.

To change the notification settings for an app, tap Settings > Notifications > App settings > Most recent > All apps and turn notifications for the app on or off.

Use quick access items

Tap the relevant quick access item in the notification panel to activate features. To see more items, pull down the menu. To rearrange these icons or add new ones, tap [Edit icon], press and hold an item, and then drag it to a new location.

Control the volume

Change the volume

If you have trouble hearing your phone's ringer in noisy environments or the volume of calls is too low, you can adjust the volume to your desired level using the volume keys on the side of your phone.

Do not connect to products that generate output signal, as this may damage the device. Do not connect any voltage source to the audio connector. If you connect an external device or headset other than a device approved for use with the audio connector, pay special attention to the volume levels.

Change the volume of media and apps
  1. Press a volume key to see the volume level bar.
  2. Tap ...
  3. Drag the slider on the volume level bar left or right.
  4. Tap Done.

Set your phone to silent

  1. Press a volume key.
  2. Tap [Mute icon].
  3. To set your phone to vibrate only, tap [Vibrate icon] or to set it to silent, tap [Silent icon].

Automatic text correction

Use the keyboard and word suggestions

As you type, your phone suggests words to help you type faster and more accurately. Word suggestions may not be available for all languages.

As you type a word, your phone suggests possible words. When your desired word appears in the suggestion bar, select it. To see more suggestions, tap and hold the suggestion.

Tip: If the suggested word is highlighted in bold, your phone automatically replaces the word you typed with it. If the word is incorrect, tap and hold the word to see more suggestions.

If you don't want the keyboard to suggest words while typing, turn off text correction. Tap Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard. Select the keyboard you usually use. Tap Text correction and turn off the text correction features you don't want to use.

Correct a word

If you notice you've misspelled a word, tap it to see suggestions to correct it.

Turn off spell checker

Tap Settings > System > Languages & input > Spell checker and turn off Use spell checker.

BATTERY LIFE

Extend battery life

To save power:

  • Always charge the battery fully.
  • Mute unnecessary sounds, such as touch sounds. Tap Settings > Sound, and select which sounds to keep.
  • Use wired headphones, rather than the loudspeaker.
  • Set the phone screen to switch off after a short time. Tap Settings > Display > Screen timeout and select the time.
  • Tap Settings > Display > Brightness level. To adjust the brightness, drag the brightness level slider.
  • Stop apps from running in the background.
  • Use location services selectively: switch location services off when you don't need them. Tap Settings > Location, and switch off Use location.
  • Use network connections selectively: Switch Bluetooth on only when needed. Use a Wi-Fi connection to connect to the internet, rather than a mobile data connection. Stop your phone scanning for available wireless networks. Tap Settings > Network & internet, and switch off Wi-Fi. If you're listening to music or otherwise using your phone, but don't want to make or receive calls, switch the airplane mode on. Tap Settings > Network & internet, and switch on Airplane mode. Airplane mode closes connections to the mobile network and switches your device's wireless features off.

  1. Tap Settings > Accessibility > Text and display.
  2. Tap Font size and drag the font size slider until the text size is to your liking.

  2. Tap Display size and drag the display size slider until the size is to your liking.

5 Connect with friends and family

Calls

Make a call

  1. Tap [Dialer icon].
  2. Tap [Contacts icon] and enter the number, or tap [Contacts icon] and select the contact you want to call.
  3. Tap [Call icon].

Answer a call

If your phone is unlocked when it rings, tap Answer. If your phone is locked when it rings, swipe up to answer.

Reject a call

If your phone is unlocked when it rings, tap Reject. If your phone is locked when it rings, swipe down to reject the call.

Contacts

Add a contact

  1. Tap Contacts > +.
  2. Fill in the information.
  3. Tap Save.

Save a contact from call history

  1. To see your call history, tap [History icon].
  2. Tap the number you want to save.
  3. Tap Add to contacts. If it's a new contact, type the contact information and tap Save. If it's an existing contact, tap Add to existing, select the contact, and tap Save.

Send messages

Send a message

  1. Tap Messages.
  2. Tap Start chat.
  3. To add a recipient, tap [Add recipient icon], type their number and tap [Checkmark icon]. To add a recipient from your contact list, start typing their name and tap the contact.
  4. To add more recipients, tap [Add recipient icon]. After selecting all recipients, tap Next.
  5. Write your message in the message box.
  6. Tap [Send icon].

Mail

You can send mail from your phone on the go.

Add an email account

The first time you use the Gmail app, you'll be prompted to set up your email account.

  1. Tap Gmail.
  2. You can choose your Google account to connect to, or tap Add an email address.
  3. After adding all accounts, tap Go to GMAIL.

Send mail

  1. Tap Gmail.
  2. Tap [Compose icon].
  3. Tap Add from contacts.
  4. Enter the subject and then the mail.
  5. Tap [Send icon].

CAMERA BASICS

Take photos

Capture memorable moments in your photo album – shoot clear and vibrant photos.

  1. Tap Camera.
  2. Frame and focus the subject.
  3. Tap [Shutter icon].

Take a selfie

  1. To switch to the front camera, tap Camera > [Switch camera icon].
  2. Tap [Shutter icon].

Record a video

  1. Tap Camera.
  2. To switch to the video recording mode, tap Video.
  3. Tap [Record icon] to start recording.
  4. To stop recording, tap [Stop icon].
  5. To go back to camera mode, tap Capture.

Your photos and videos

View photos and videos on your phone

Tap Gallery.

Share your photos and videos
  1. Tap Gallery, tap the photo you want to share, and tap [Share icon].
  2. Choose how you want to share the photo or video.

Copy your photos and videos to your computer

Do you want to view your photos or videos on a bigger screen? Transfer them to your computer.

You can use your computer's file manager to copy or transfer your photos and videos to your computer.

Connect your phone to a computer using a compatible USB cable. To set the USB connection type, open the notification panel and tap USB connection.

7 Internet and connections

Activate Wi-Fi

Turn on Wi-Fi

  1. Tap Settings > Network & internet.
  2. Tap Wi-Fi.
  3. Select the network you want to use.

When you see this icon at the top of the screen, your Wi-Fi connection is active. If both Wi-Fi and mobile data connections are available, your phone uses the Wi-Fi connection.

Important: Use encryption to enhance the security of your Wi-Fi connection. Encryption reduces the risk of others accessing your data.

Browse the web

Search the web
  1. Tap Chrome.
  2. In the search field, type a search term or web address.
  3. Tap [Go icon] or select from suggested matches.

Tip: If your network service provider does not charge a specific fee for data transfer, use a Wi-Fi network to connect to the internet to save on data costs.

Connect your computer to the web using your phone

Access the internet from your laptop or other device using your mobile data connection.

  1. Tap Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi hotspot to share your mobile data connection, USB tethering to use a USB connection, Bluetooth tethering to use Bluetooth, or Ethernet tethering to use an Ethernet cable.

The other device uses your data plan's data, for which you may be charged data traffic fees. Contact your network service provider for information on availability and costs.

BLUETOOTH®

Connect to a Bluetooth device

  1. Tap Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Bluetooth.
  2. Switch on Bluetooth.
  3. Make sure other devices are also switched on. You may need to start the pairing process with the other device. For details, see the user guide of the other device.
  4. Tap Pair new device and tap the device you want to pair from the list of discovered Bluetooth devices.
  5. You may need to type a passcode. For details, see the user guide of the other device.

Because Bluetooth wireless technology devices use radio waves to communicate, they do not need to be in direct line of sight of each other. However, Bluetooth devices should be within 10 metres (33 feet) of each other. Obstructions such as walls or other electronic devices may cause interference with the connection.

Paired devices can connect to your phone when Bluetooth is on. Other devices can only detect your phone when the Bluetooth setting is open.

Do not pair with unknown devices or accept their connection requests. This helps protect your phone from harmful content.

Share your content using Bluetooth

If you want to share your photos or other content with a friend, send them using Bluetooth.

You can use more than one Bluetooth connection at a time. For example, while using a Bluetooth headset, you can still send content to another phone.

  1. Tap Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Bluetooth.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is on on both phones and the phones are visible to each other.
  3. Go to the content you want to send and tap [Share icon] > Bluetooth.
  4. Tap your friend's phone in the list of received Bluetooth devices.
  5. If a passcode is required for the other phone, type the passcode or tap Accept and pair.

Passcodes are only used when you connect to something for the first time.

Remove pairing

If you no longer have the device you paired your phone with, you can remove the pairing.

  1. Tap Settings > Connected devices > Previously connected devices.
  2. Tap [Settings icon] next to the device name.
  3. Tap Forget.

VPN

You may need a virtual private network (VPN) connection to access company resources, such as your intranet or corporate mail, or you may use a VPN service for personal purposes.

Contact your company's IT administrator for details on your VPN configuration or check your VPN service's website for more information.

Use a secure VPN connection

  1. Tap Settings > Network & internet > VPN.
  2. To add a VPN profile, tap +.
  3. Type your company's IT administrator's or VPN service's details as instructed.

Edit a VPN profile

  1. Tap [Settings icon] next to the profile name.
  2. Change the details as needed.

Delete a VPN profile

  1. Tap [Settings icon] next to the profile name.
  2. Tap Forget.

8 Organise your day

Date and time

Set date and time

Tap Settings > System > Date & time.

Update time and date automatically

You can set your phone to automatically update the time, date, and time zone. Automatic updates are a network service and may not be available depending on your region or network service provider.

  1. Tap Settings > System > Date & time.
  2. Switch on Set time automatically.
  3. Switch on Set time zone automatically.

Change to 24-hour format

Tap Settings > System > Date & time and switch on Use 24-hour format.

Alarm clock

Set an alarm

  1. Tap Clock > Alarms.
  2. To add an alarm, tap [Add alarm icon].
  3. Select the hour and minute and tap OK.
  4. To repeat the alarm on specific days, tap the relevant days of the week.

Turn off an alarm

When the alarm rings, swipe it to the right.

Calendar

Choose a calendar type

Tap Calendar > = and then choose what type of calendar you want to view. If you have signed in to an account, such as your Google account, your calendar is displayed on the phone.

Add an event

  1. Tap Calendar > +.
  2. Add the necessary details.
  3. To repeat the event on specific days, tap Does not repeat and choose how often the event will repeat.
  4. To set a reminder, tap Add notification and set the time.
  5. Tap Save.

Tip: To edit an event, tap the event and tap [Edit icon] to edit the details.

Delete an appointment

  1. Tap the event.
  2. Tap : > Delete.

9 Maps

Find a location and get directions

Find a location

Find specific locations and businesses with Google Maps.

  1. Tap Maps.
  2. In the search bar, type a search term, such as a street address or place name.
  3. As you type, select an item from the list of suggested matches or tap [Search icon] to search.

The location is shown on the map. If no results are found for your search, make sure the spelling of your search terms is correct.

View your current location

Tap Maps > [Location icon].

Get directions to a location

  1. Tap Maps and enter your destination in the search bar.
  2. Tap Directions. The highlighted icon indicates the mode of transport, for example, [Car icon]. To change the mode of transport, select a new mode under the search bar.
  3. If you do not want your current location to be the starting point, tap Your location and search for a new starting point.
  4. Tap Start to begin navigation.

The route is shown on the map, along with an estimate of how long it will take to get there. To view detailed directions, tap the step.

10 Apps, updates, and backup

GET APPS FROM GOOGLE PLAY

Add a payment method

To use Google Play services, you need to add a Google account to your phone. Some content on Google Play may be charged. To add a payment method, tap Play Store, tap your Google logo in the search field, and then tap Payments & subscriptions. Don't forget to get permission from the owner before purchasing content from Google Play.

Download apps

  1. Tap Play Store.
  2. Tap the search bar to find apps or choose apps from your recommendations.
  3. In the app description, click Install to download and install the app.

To view your apps, go to the home screen and swipe up from the bottom of the screen.

Update your phone software

Install available updates

Tap Settings > System > System update > Check for updates.

When your phone notifies you of an available update, follow the instructions shown on your phone. If your phone memory is low, you may need to move your apps, photos, or other content to a memory card.

Before starting an update, connect to a charger or make sure the device has enough power, and connect to Wi-Fi, as update packages can consume a lot of mobile data.

Back up your data

Use the backup feature on your phone to ensure the security of your data. Your device backs up data (such as Wi-Fi passwords and call history) and app data (such as settings and files collected by apps) remotely.

Turn on automatic backup

Tap Settings > System > Backup and switch on backup.

Restore factory settings and remove personal content from your phone

Reset your phone

  1. Tap Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).
  2. Follow the instructions shown on your phone.

11 Product and safety information

For your safety

Read these simple guidelines. Failure to follow them may be dangerous or against local laws and regulations. For more information, read the full user guide.

Switch off the device in prohibited areas

Switch off the device when mobile devices are not allowed or when they may cause interference or danger, for example, in an aircraft, in hospitals or near medical equipment, near fuel, chemicals, or in explosive areas. Follow all instructions for prohibited areas.

Prioritise safety on the road

Follow all local laws. Always keep your hands free to operate the vehicle when driving. Your primary focus while driving should be road safety.

Interference

All wireless devices are sensitive to interference from other devices, which may affect performance.

Authorised service

Only authorised personnel can install or repair this product, unless self-repair assistance is available. For more information, see www.hmd.com/self-repair.

Battery, charger, and other accessories

Use only HMD Global Oy approved batteries, chargers, and other accessories with this device. Do not connect incompatible devices.

Keep your device dry

If your device is water-resistant, see the device's technical specifications for its IP rating for more detailed guidance.

Glass parts

This device and/or its screen are made of glass. If the device falls on a hard surface or is subjected to a strong impact, the glass may break. Stop using the device until the glass is replaced.

Protect your hearing

Warning: When you use a headset, your ability to hear outside sounds may be affected. Do not use the headset if it compromises your safety. Some wireless devices may interfere with hearing aids.

Protect your device from harmful substances

Your device may come into contact with viruses or other harmful substances. Take the following precautions:

  • Be careful when opening messages. They may contain malicious software or may damage your device or computer.
  • When accepting connectivity requests, browsing the internet, or downloading content, be careful. Do not accept Bluetooth connections from untrusted sources.
  • Only install and use services and software from sources you trust and that provide adequate security and protection.
  • Install antivirus and other security software on your device and any computer connected to it. Use only one antivirus app at a time. Using multiple antivirus apps may affect the performance and operation of your device and/or computer.
  • If you access pre-installed bookmarks and third-party internet sites, exercise caution. HMD Global does not endorse or take responsibility for such sites.

Driving

The radio signal may affect the electrical system of vehicles if it is not installed correctly or if the system is not adequately protected. For more information, contact your vehicle or equipment manufacturer. The device should only be installed by authorised personnel in a vehicle. Incorrect installation may be dangerous and may void your warranty. Regularly check that the device is correctly installed and functioning in your vehicle. Do not store or transport the device, its parts, or accessories in the same compartment as flammable or explosive materials. Do not place your device or accessories near an airbag.

Potentially explosive areas

Switch off your device in potentially explosive areas, such as at a petrol station. Sparks may cause an explosion or fire, resulting in injury or death. Pay attention to the prohibitions in areas with fuel, chemical substances, or where transfer of chemical substances is in progress. There may not be clear signs in potentially explosive areas. These are generally areas where you are advised to switch off your vehicle engine, below deck on a boat, at a fuel transfer facility, or where there are chemicals or particles in the air. Ask the manufacturer of vehicles using liquid petroleum gas (such as propane or butane) whether the device can be safely used near them.

Certification information

This mobile device complies with the guidelines for exposure to radio waves.
