Canon EOS 70D Wi-Fi Function Basic Instruction Manual
This booklet explains basic procedures for easy-to-use functions like "Transferring Images between Cameras" and "Connecting to a smartphone." For detailed explanations of Wi-Fi functions, please refer to the "Wi-Fi Function Instruction Manual" included on the Camera Instruction Manual CD-ROM.
What You Can Do Using the Wireless LAN Functions
The camera's wireless LAN functions enable a range of wireless tasks, from sending images to web services and other cameras to remotely controlling the camera. This is achieved by connecting to a Wi-Fi® network or another device that supports the camera's wireless LAN functions.
The following functions are available:
- (1) Transfer images between cameras: Exchange images with other compatible Canon cameras.
- (2) Connect to a smartphone: Make images viewable on a smartphone and shoot remotely using a smartphone.
- (3) Print images using a Wi-Fi printer: Print images wirelessly via a Wi-Fi printer.
- (4) Operate the camera remotely using EOS Utility: Remotely control the camera using the provided EOS Utility software.
- (5) Send images to a Web service: Save and share images via online services like CANON IMAGE GATEWAY.
- (6) View images using a media player: View images on your TV set using a media player compatible with DLNA via a wireless LAN.
Note: Instructions for functions (3) to (6) and for connecting via an access point for function (2) are detailed in the "Wi-Fi Function Instruction Manual" (PDF) on the CD-ROM.
Conventions Used in This Manual

1 Basic Settings for Wireless LAN Functions
This chapter covers the settings required to use the camera's wireless LAN functions.
Registering a Nickname
Setting a nickname for your camera is essential, as it will be displayed on other devices when connected via a wireless LAN.
- Select [Wi-Fi]: Navigate to the Wi-Fi option under the Tab 3 menu and press the SET button.
- Select [Enable]: Use the arrow keys to select Enable and press SET. The Wi-Fi function option will now be selectable.
- Select [Wi-Fi function]: Under Tab 3, select Wi-Fi function and press SET. If this is the first time, a screen to register a nickname will appear. Select OK to proceed.
- Enter a nickname: Up to 16 characters can be entered. Refer to the "Virtual Keyboard Operation" section for character input instructions.
- Finish: Press the MENU button. Select OK on the confirmation screen and press SET. The nickname is registered, and the Wi-Fi function screen will display. To change the nickname later, press the INFO. button on the Wi-Fi function screen and select Edit nickname.
Virtual Keyboard Operation
Switching input areas: Press the Q button to switch between top and bottom input areas.
Moving the cursor: Use the arrow keys (U, V) to move the cursor.
Entering text: Select characters using the arrow keys and press SET to enter them. The number of characters entered and remaining is shown at the top right of the screen.
Switching input modes: Select the Aa=1@ icon. Pressing SET cycles through lowercase, numbers/symbols 1, numbers/symbols 2, and uppercase characters.

Finishing text entry: Press the MENU button to confirm and exit. Select OK if a confirmation screen appears.
Canceling text entry: Press the INFO. button to cancel and exit. Select OK if a confirmation screen appears.
Basic Operation and Settings
Using the Camera While Wireless LAN Functions Are Active: To prioritize Wi-Fi functions, avoid operating the shutter button, Mode Dial, or playback button, as this may interrupt wireless operations. The connection may also terminate if the LCD monitor is closed inward. When Wi-Fi is set to Enable, movie shooting is disabled, and USB connections are also disabled.
Auto Power Off: If the camera's auto power off function activates during a wireless LAN connection, the Wi-Fi function will turn off. The connection is restored when the camera wakes up. To prevent this, set Auto power off to Disable under Tab 2.
[Wi-Fi] Under the [Tab 3]: When in locations where wireless devices are prohibited (e.g., airplanes, hospitals), set Wi-Fi to Disable.
[Wi-Fi] Settings and Connection Status: The status of Wi-Fi settings and connection can be checked on the camera's LCD monitor and panel. Icons indicate Wi-Fi function status, connection status, and data transmission.
Touch Control: Wireless LAN functions can also be operated via the touch screen. Refer to the Camera Instruction Manual for details.
Connecting with an Interface Cable: If Wi-Fi is set to Enable, interface cable connection is disabled. Set it to Disable to use an interface cable. While connected via an interface cable, Wi-Fi settings cannot be changed.
Using an Eye-Fi Card: If Wi-Fi is set to Enable, image transfer using an Eye-Fi card is disabled.
2 Transferring Images Between Cameras
Images can be transferred between Canon cameras equipped with built-in wireless LAN functions.
Compatibility: This feature is available for Canon cameras with built-in wireless LAN functions marketed in 2012 or later. It does not support Canon camcorders. Cameras without built-in wireless LAN, even if they support Eye-Fi cards, are not compatible.
File Formats: Still photos can only be transferred if they are in JPEG format. Movies can be transferred, but playback compatibility may vary depending on the receiving camera.
Selecting the Connection Destination
Register the target camera to connect to via wireless LAN. Only one camera can be connected at a time.
- Select [Wi-Fi function]: Under Tab 3, set Wi-Fi to Enable, then select Wi-Fi function.
- Select [Transfer images between cameras]: Press the arrow keys to select the Transfer images between cameras option and press SET.
- Start connection on the target camera: When the "Start connection on target camera" screen appears on the sending camera, initiate the connection on the target camera. Refer to the target camera's manual for specific procedures. A successful connection saves settings automatically and displays an image from the card.
- Select the images to send: Choose the images on the sending camera (refer to page 18). Do not operate the receiving camera during this process.
Note: GPS information is not displayed on the camera's playback screen, even if appended to the received image. Shooting locations can be viewed using Map Utility software. Connection settings are saved with the nickname of the connected camera. Auto power off is disabled when connected to another camera.
