Product Overview
The WAGOBOX® XLA is a general-purpose electrical enclosure designed for use with WAGO 222, 773, 2273, and 221 series connectors. It is rated up to 450V and supports conductor sizes from 0.08mm² to 6mm².
The enclosure supports a maximum of two separately supplied individual circuits. It can accommodate up to 36 individual conductor connections (e.g., twelve 3-core cables of 1mm²) or up to 12 connections for 6mm² conductors (e.g., six 3-core cables).
Cable clamps can grip up to 12 cables with an overall diameter between 3mm and 15mm.
Familiarisation
The internal layout of the WAGOBOX® XLA features two main sides (left and right) with a smaller central connector receptacle. There are a total of seven connector receptacles: three on the left side (numbered 1, 2, 3), three on the right side (numbered 5, 6, 7), and one central receptacle (numbered 4). The central receptacle is designed for WAGO 221 series connectors and offers extra capacity.
The WAGOBOX® XLA is designed to support either one or two circuits. If two circuits are used, they must be supplied separately, and no connections between the left and right sides are permitted. Each side must be dedicated to a single circuit. If a single circuit is supported, cross-linking between sides is allowed.
It is important to indicate the circuit type (e.g., 'LIGHTS', 'RADIAL') on the lid using permanent marker or labels.
Installation Instructions
Follow these steps for a standard installation:
- Plan Circuit Arrangement: Decide on the connector arrangement using either the left or right side of the enclosure. The example shows the right side being used to connect a switch to a lighting circuit.
- Prepare Cables: Strip approximately 70-80mm of the outer sheath from each cable.
- Select Connectors: Choose the appropriate WAGO connectors for the circuit.
- Connect Circuit: Connect the prepared cables to the selected connectors.
- Make Cross Connections (if applicable): If cross connections between the two sides are needed for a single circuit, make these connections using single core wires cut to length before sliding connectors into place.
- Set Cable Grippers: Adjust the cable grippers to suit the cable diameters. The grippers accommodate cable diameters from 3mm to 15.5mm. There are 6 gripper positions, each adjustable by +/- 2.5mm.
- Gripper Selection Table:
Position Cable Diameter 1 3mm 2 5.5mm 3 8mm 4 10.5mm 5 13mm 6 15.5mm - Install Cables into Grippers: For cables of different sizes, install the largest cable at the bottom of the gripper slot, followed by the next size, and the smallest last. Fit the gripper first, then insert each cable section to prevent movement.
- Alternative Gripper Use: If cables are the same diameter, insert the grippers first, then position the connectors, leaving cables projecting from the enclosure.
- Slide Cables: Slide the cables down into the gripper slots.
- Repeat for Other Side: Repeat the installation process for the left hand side of the WAGOBOX® XLA. An example shows connecting a switching circuit (right) to four light fittings (left).
- Close Lid: Once cable installation is complete, close and secure the WAGOBOX® XLA lid using the integrated cable-tie locking points.
- Surface Mounting (Optional): If required, the WAGOBOX® XLA can be fixed to a surface using the fixing button feature. Attach the button to the desired position and slide the enclosure into place using the fixing slots in the base.
2273 & 221 Series Connector Adapters
To ensure compliance with BS EN 60670-22 when using WAGO 2273 and 221 series connectors with the WAGOBOX® XLA, specific adapters must be used. These adapters fit into the connector receptacles inside the enclosure.
Each adapter provides a secure slot for the appropriate connector type, preventing excessive movement and inadvertent extraction of the connector or connected wire. The adapters are supplied flat and should be folded into a rectangular shape with side fins facing inward before insertion into the receptacle.
Diagram Description: Adapters are shown fitted into the WAGOBOX XLA receptacles with 2273 connectors.
Maintenance Free Installation Instructions (BS 5733-MF)
For installations in inaccessible locations, follow these instructions to ensure compliance with BS 5733 for a maintenance-free accessory:
- Connector Requirements: Only WAGO 222, 773, 2273, and 221 connectors are permitted. Note that 2273 and 221 connectors require the use of adapters.
- Single Circuit Limitation: BS 5733 permits only single circuits to be terminated into a maintenance-free accessory.
- BS 5733 Rating Requirements: Use the connector ratings specified below for BS 5733 compliance, as these may differ from standard WAGO ratings.
- Connector Ratings Table:
Connector Series Max. Current Rating Max. Cable csa mm² Single Side Max. Aggregate Current (Iag) 773 20A 2.5 50A 2273 20A 2.5 50A 222 20A 2.5 50A 221 32A 6 64A 773-173 32A 6 64A - Aggregate Current Limit: The 'Single Side Max. Aggregate Current (Iag)' is the sum of all possible currents through either the left or right side of the WAGOBOX® XLA during normal use. This limit must not be exceeded. Consult a qualified electrician if unsure about calculating this value.
- Follow BS EN 60670-22: Adhere to the BS EN 60670-22 installation instructions, ensuring all phase connectors are neatly fitted into the receptacles.
- Secure Lid: Secure the WAGOBOX® XLA lid using the tie-wrap locking points.
