Preparing the Graphics Card
Removing the Stock Cooler
GeForce RTX™ 4080 GAMING OC
Important! Ensure a clean, flat surface for work. Use foam or soft material to lay the graphics card on.
STEP 1: Unscrew the thirteen (13) screws securing the stock cooler. Unplug any connectors before removing the cooler.
Required Tool: Phillips Head Screwdriver
STEP 2: After unplugging connectors, remove seven (7) additional screws from the front of the GPU PCB. Then, unscrew four (4) I/O Bracket screws from the side. Remove the stock backplate and I/O Bracket. The I/O Bracket and five (5) screws will be reused. Remove all thermal pads and thermal grease from the GPU PCB.
Required Tool: Phillips Head Screwdriver
Preparing the Water Block for Installation
DO NOT REMOVE STANDOFFS FROM SCREWS!
STEP 1: Unscrew six (6) Screws AX1 M2.5 x 8 mm. Remove the backplate with screws and standoffs attached. Ensure standoffs remain on the screws. Remove PCB cardboard. Save removed parts.
Caution: Do not remove standoffs from screws. If a standoff detaches, replace it with a spare and screw it onto the AX1 M2.5 x 8 screws. Do not push the standoff onto the screw.
Required Tool: Phillips Head Screwdriver
Cutting and Placing Thermal Pads
The GPU water block includes thermal pads that need to be cut into smaller pieces to cover VRM components (COILs, MOSFETs, drivers).
STEP 1: Cut thermal pads to size as shown in the diagram.
Caution: Remove the protective foil from both sides of the thermal pad before installation.
Replacement thermal pads:
- Thermal Pad F 1.0 mm – (120 x 16 mm) EAN:3830046996732
- Thermal Pad G 1.0 mm – (120 x 24 mm) EAN: 3830046996770
- Thermal Pad G 2.0 mm – (120 x 24 mm) EAN: 3830046996794
STEP 2: Place the cut thermal pads on the PCB as shown in the picture. Ensure all thermal pads are correctly placed before attaching the PCB to the Water Block.
Applying Thermal Compound
STEP 1: Apply the provided thermal grease (thermal compound) on the GPU heat spreader (IHS). The layer should be thin and even across the entire surface.
Caution: Excessive or uneven thermal grease application may lead to poor performance.
Required Tool: Thermal Grease
Attaching the Water Block
STEP 1: Reuse the factory-provided I/O Bracket before placing the water block onto the GPU PCB.
Required Tools: I/O Bracket Screw (5 pcs), I/O Bracket, Phillips Head Screwdriver
STEP 2: Carefully position the water block with preinstalled standoffs onto the graphics card. Align the mounting holes of the PCB with the holes of the water block.
Caution: Do not use excessive force when pressing the block down, as chip dies are prone to cracking. Ensure all thermal pads are correctly placed before attaching the PCB to the Water Block.
STEP 3: Use five (5) M2.5 x 4 AX1 Screws and five (5) PVC washers to tighten the PCB to the water block. Use one (1) M2.5 x 6 AX1 Screw without a PVC Washer. Tighten screws evenly, starting around the GPU core and moving outward to prevent GPU damage.
Required Tools: M2.5 x 4 AX1 Screw (5 pcs), M2.5 x 6 AX1 Screw (1 pc), Polyamide Washer (5 pcs), Phillips Head Screwdriver
Installing the Backplate
STEP 1: After attaching the water block, cut and place additional thermal pads onto the backplate as shown in the image to cover necessary components.
Caution: Remove the protective foil from both sides of the thermal pad before installation.
Replacement thermal pads:
- Thermal Pad F 1.0 mm – (120 x 16 mm) EAN:3830046996732
- Thermal Pad G 1.0 mm – (120 x 24 mm) EAN: 3830046996770
- Thermal Pad G 2.0 mm – (120 x 24 mm) EAN: 3830046996794
STEP 2: Apply the thermal pads onto the backplate as shown in the image.
Attaching the Backplate
STEP 1: Position the Backplate (with screws and standoffs) onto the GPU PCB. Align all holes correctly. Tighten screws evenly.
Caution: Ensure all Thermal Pads are placed correctly before attaching the backplate. Do not use excessive force.
Required Tool: Phillips Head Screwdriver
Inserting the Graphics Card into the Chassis
Carefully lift the graphics card with the installed water block and insert it into your PC's motherboard PCI Express expansion slot. Be aware that the graphics card is heavier with the water block installed.
Caution: Handle the graphics card with care. Avoid unnecessary manipulation of the water block assembly to prevent damage to the card or water block.
Fittings and Tubing
Screw in two (2) G1/4 threaded male fittings. Attach liquid cooling tubes and connect the water block to the cooling loop.
Caution: Do not forget to plug the remaining two openings using the enclosed EK-Plug G1/4 or equivalent.
EK recommends using EK fittings with all EK water blocks.
Caution: When using non-EK fittings, ensure the male G1/4” thread length does not exceed 5mm.
Required Tool: EK-Loop Multi Allen Key
Connecting the D-RGB LED Strip
STEP 1: Plug the 3-pin connector of the distribution plate D-RGB LED light to the D-RGB HEADER on the motherboard. The LED will function if the pin layout is +5V, Digital, Empty, Ground.
Caution: Incorrect installation or connection to the wrong header can damage the LED strip or the header itself.
Testing the Loop
Perform a 24-hour leak test to ensure the installation of EK components was successful. Once the loop is complete and filled with coolant, connect the pump to a PSU outside the system. Do not connect power to other components. Turn on the PSU and let the pump run continuously. Coolant level may drop as air collects in the distribution plate. Inspect all loop parts. If leaks occur, fix them and repeat the testing process. Ensure all hardware is dry before powering on the system to prevent damage.
Warranty
EK products are warranted against defects in materials and quality for 24 months from the date of delivery. During this period, products will be repaired or have parts replaced at EK's discretion, provided:
- The product is returned to the original point of purchase.
- The product was purchased by the end-user and not used for commercial purposes.
- The product has not been misused, handled carelessly, or used contrary to the manual.
This warranty does not confer rights beyond those stated and does not cover consequential loss or damage. It is offered as an extra benefit and does not affect statutory consumer rights. The warranty is void if the product contacts aggressive UV additives or improper liquids. EK Water blocks are sealed with a warranty-voiding label; removing it voids the leak-free guarantee but not the product guarantee. For RMA issues, contact EK Customer Support at www.ekwb.com/support.
