Assembly Instructions
Follow these steps to assemble your Spyker spreader.
-
Step 1
Remove two M6 locknuts and M6 x 45mm long bolts from the wheel frame tubes. This will detach the pivot and bracket assembly. Set the bolts and nuts aside; they will be re-installed in Step 2.
Figure 1 Description: A close-up view shows two bolts and nuts being removed from the frame tubes, illustrating the detachment of the pivot and bracket assembly.
-
Step 2
Insert the arm assembly between the frame tubes. Re-install the pivot and bracket assembly through the wheel frame tubes and the arm assembly using the two M6 x 45mm bolts and M6 locknuts that were removed in Step 1.
Figure 2 Description: The arm assembly is shown being inserted between the frame tubes, with the pivot and bracket assembly being reattached using the previously removed hardware.
-
Step 3
Rotate the control rod and insert it into the adjustment handle. Remove one nut from the end of the control rod. Insert the control rod into the pivot and bracket assembly as shown. Note the orientation of the bracket. Install the second nut finger tight only.
Ensure the rate gate opens and closes fully. If it does, hold the upper control rod nut with a wrench and tighten the bottom nut only.
Figure 3 Description: A detailed view shows the control rod being inserted into the adjustment handle and the pivot/bracket assembly. It highlights the nut adjustment for the rate gate.
-
Step 4
Tighten all nuts and bolts on both sides of the spreader at the locations indicated.
Figure 4 Description: The spreader is shown with arrows pointing to the locations where nuts and bolts should be tightened on both sides.
Operate Safely
Read and follow these safety guidelines to ensure safe operation of the spreader.
- Keep bystanders away when operating this machine.
- Use this machine only for its intended purpose.
- Do not allow children or untrained persons to operate the machine.
- Keep all parts in good condition and properly installed. Fix damaged parts immediately and replace worn or broken parts.
- Do not modify the machine or its safety devices. Unauthorized modifications may impair function and safety, and will void the warranty.
- Do not allow anyone to sit or ride on the equipment during operation. Keep riders off any attachments.
- Wear substantial footwear and long trousers. Do not operate the equipment when barefoot or wearing open sandals.
- Do not wear loose-fitting clothing that can get caught in moving parts.
- Always wear eye protection when operating the equipment.
- Stay alert for holes in the terrain and other hidden hazards.
- Watch out for traffic when crossing or near roadways.
- Before operating any feature of this machine, observe your surroundings and look for bystanders.
- Always wash hands after contact with fertilizers and pesticides.
- Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to ensure the equipment is in safe working condition.
Operation Guide
Become Familiar With The Operation Of The Spreader Before You Put Material In The Hopper
- Practice walking with the spreader, opening and closing the rate gate at appropriate times.
- Travel at a constant speed. Open the rate gate only after the spreader is in motion at operating speed (approximately 3 mph, or a brisk walking pace).
- Close the rate gate while the spreader is still at operational speed.
Dial Setting Information
The RATE DIAL features 9 numbers with 10 stops between each number, allowing for precise control of the spreading rate. The dial sets with a simple turn and automatically locks into position. Ensure the dial number aligns with the dial indicator.
Diagram Description: A circular dial labeled "Rate Dial" is shown, with numbers and indicator marks.
Contact Of Some Products On Some Plants Can Be Fatal
If a specific dial setting is not listed, use the size and weight comparison table in this manual. Start with a lower dial setting. If the coverage is insufficient, pass over the area again. A higher setting can be used once a proven dial setting is established.
Remember: Published dial settings are approximate. The spreader's operation, material condition (damp, dry, pulverized), and weather conditions are all contributing factors. It is often advisable to spread the area twice, at one-half rate, in cross directions, especially under damp or humid conditions.
Rotary Agitator
Use the rotary agitator only when necessary. Free-flowing, lump-free materials do not require it. The agitator is easily installed or removed. Note its clockwise rotation and sweep. Place a felt washer around the spinner shaft before inserting the agitator.
Spread Characteristics
- The spread width ranges from 4 to 12 feet, depending on material volume/density, particle size, and travel rate.
- The spread thins or feathers at the outer edges, creating a soft "Edge Of Spread" line that avoids sharp stripes and streaks. This allows for extra coverage under trees or heavy feeding areas without visible lines.
- Gaps and double overlaps are less likely, and minor travel errors are forgiven and not noticeable.
WARNING: When spreading products containing herbicides, exercise extreme caution regarding careless spreading and wind-drift.
Material Handling and Spreading
Now You Are Ready To Put Material In The Hopper
WARNING: Avoid Injury! Chemicals can be dangerous. Protect operators and bystanders.
- Ensure the rate gate is in the closed position before filling.
- Read the chemical container label for handling instructions. A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) should be obtained from the chemical dealer for proper safety information.
- Wear appropriate clothing and safety equipment when handling or applying chemicals.
- Prohibit smoking, drinking, and eating around chemicals.
- When spreading products containing herbicides, exercise extreme caution to prevent careless spreading and wind-drift. (Refer to "Contact Of Some Products On Some Plants Can Be Fatal" section).
- Fill the spreader on a flat, level surface only (e.g., sidewalk, driveway, cardboard) to prevent material loss.
- When filling the hopper, always use the screen to help break up clumps.
Now You Are Ready To Spread
- Keep the spinner blade clean. Excess material build-up can lead to an uneven spread pattern.
- Keep the impeller level while spreading.
- DO NOT overload the spreader. Maximum capacity is 50 lbs.
- DO NOT use the spreader on windy days.
- Spread header strips at the ends of the area, OPPOSITE the direction of spreading. This creates a "turn-around" area for re-alignment.
- For example, a 6 ft. wide spread: Make the first pass at one-half the spread width from the edge (approx. 3 feet).
- Subsequent spreading passes should be at the full spread width (approx. 6 ft. apart).
- TAKE A SIGHTING AT THE FAR END. Keep your eye on the sighting line as you spread to maintain your path.
- Continue spreading until the area is covered.
- Leftover fertilizer can be spread under trees and other high-feeding areas without showing "edge of spread" lines.
Tip: When not spreading and pushing the spreader some distance, tip it so only the idle wheel is on the ground.
Diagram Description: A diagram illustrates a spreading pattern. It shows a "Header" area, followed by a 3-foot initial pass, and then two 6-foot passes, demonstrating how to cover an area and create a turn-around zone.
Cleaning The Spreader Is Part Of The Spreading Job
Clean and oil the spreader immediately after each use.
- METHOD #1: Wipe the spreader thoroughly with an oily cloth. Oil all bearings and bearing areas.
- METHOD #2: Wash, rinse, and dry the spreader. Note: Drying takes time, as moisture trapped in bearing areas is slow to dissipate. Immediately after drying, oil all bearings and moving parts. Ensure all operations are thorough.
NOTE: Good "Dry Cleaning" is preferable to poor "Wet Cleaning."
- It is virtually impossible to have rust and corrosion on a clean, dry, oiled surface.
- Again, just before using the spreader, oil all bearings and moving parts.
- In storage, ideally, the spreader should be hung by the handle. In any case, do not pile weight on the spreader, as excess weight over time can distort the tires.
Oil Bearings And All Moving Parts: Make sure the spreader is running freely!
Troubleshooting
Problem | Cause | Solution |
---|---|---|
Spreader does not sit flat | The "feet" or the flattened portion of the spreader hopper support tubes are not bent equally. | Using a hammer or pliers, bend the feet to be equal with each other. |
Deflector shut-off is binding and will not open/close properly | Shut off plate is jammed with debris. | Thoroughly wash out hopper and shut off plates with water. Ensure debris is not stuck between the shut off plate and rate gate plate. |
