Supplies: In addition to the supplied hardware, you will need a drill with various bits, a cutting tool, safety glasses, a dust mask, rubbing alcohol, and masking tape.
NOTE: Illustrations may differ from your product but the function remains the same.
1 Plan the Mounting Location
Choose a suitable, flat area on the dashboard for mounting. Consider the following:
- Interference: Ensure adequate distance from electric motors or equipment that may cause electronic interference.
- Stability: The mounting area should be protected from waves, shock, vibration, and water.
- Depth: The mounting area needs at least 3 inches (7.62 cm) of depth for the control head and cables.
- Ventilation: The area beneath the mounting surface should be well-ventilated.
- Accessibility: The location must allow easy access for all cables to reach the control head ports.
NOTE: If cables are too short, extension cables are available. Contact Humminbird Technical Support for assistance.
HELIX 5 Series In-Dash Mounting Dimensions:
The control head has a width of 7.55 inches (191.77 mm) and a depth of 2.90 inches (73.66 mm).
2 Cut the In-Dash Mounting Hole
To in-dash mount the HELIX control head, begin by positioning the components on the intended installation surfaces.
- Review the instructions, measurements, and cutting options on the In-dash Mounting Template.
- Tape the template to the chosen in-dash mounting location.
- Select the best cutting method for your boat using the template:
- Drill an entry hole large enough for your cutting tool's blade, away from the main cut line.
- Alternatively, drill a corner hole (approx. 0.42 inches / 10.7 mm diameter) away from the main cut line, repeating for all four corners as indicated on the template. Use one corner hole as an entry hole or drill an additional one.
- Carefully cut along the inside of the cut line around the template.
- Test the Mounting Hole: Insert the control head into the mounting hole to check the fit. Make necessary adjustments. Remove the template.
- Thoroughly clean and deburr the mounting hole.
3 Install the Control Head
- Clean the Mating Surfaces: Use rubbing alcohol to clean the edges of the in-dash mounting hole and the back rim of the control head where the gasket will be installed. Allow to dry completely.
- Place the control head, screen-side down, on a towel on a stable surface.
- Peel the brown liner from the gasket's adhesive backing.
- Align the gasket around the control head rim, ensuring it is centered and has no uneven gaps.
- Lightly press one side of the gasket onto the flat rim of the control head.
- Confirm alignment and centering, then lightly press down on the remaining sides of the gasket. Adjust as needed.
- Carefully peel the plastic film from the gasket.
- Insert the control head through the mounting hole from the front of the dash. Press firmly around the sides of the control head for 20 seconds to secure the adhesive.
4 Route and Connect the Cables
- Refer to the installation guides for each hardware component for power and optional equipment installation.
- Route all cables (power, transducer, accessories) to the control head and insert the connectors into the correct ports on the back of the control head.
CAUTION! Do NOT mount cables where connectors could be submerged in water. If cables are in a splash-prone area, consider applying dielectric grease to the inside of connectors to prevent corrosion.
Your control head is now ready for operation. Refer to your control head operations manual for details.
Optional: Use a Y-cable to connect a Transducer and Speed Sensor Accessory.
