Installing the Batteries

The radio can use either a NiMH rechargeable battery pack or three AA Alkaline Batteries. The radio beeps when batteries are low.

  1. Ensure the radio is OFF.
  2. Push the latch to the left to unlock the battery door.
  3. Insert the NiMH battery pack with the '+' and '-' signs facing correctly, or insert AA Alkaline batteries observing polarity.
  4. Close the battery door and push the latch to the right to lock it.

Radio Battery Meter

The Radio Battery icon shows 0-3 bars indicating remaining charge. A single segment triggers a low battery alert (chirping).

Battery Capacity Maintenance

Using the Micro-USB Cable/TALKABOUT Charger (Optional)

The micro-USB cable allows charging of the NiMH battery pack.

  1. Power off the radio before charging.
  2. Plug the micro-USB cable into the radio's charging port.
  3. Connect the cable to a standard USB power adapter (0.5A or above recommended).
  4. Connect the adapter to a wall outlet.
  5. An empty battery charges in approximately 8 hours. The battery meter scrolls during charging.

Note: Allow batteries to acclimate to ambient temperature for about 20 minutes before charging if moving between hot and cold environments. For optimal battery life, remove the radio from the charger within 16 hours and do not store it while connected.

Turning Your Radio On and Off

Turn the rotary knob clockwise to turn the radio ON. Turn counterclockwise to turn it OFF.

Setting the Volume

Turn the rotary knob clockwise to increase volume and counterclockwise to decrease volume. Do not hold the radio close to your ear.

Talking and Listening

All radios in a group must be set to the same channel and Sub-Code to communicate. Hold the radio 2-3 cm from your mouth. Press and hold the PTT button while speaking; the Transmit (Tx) icon appears. Release the PTT button to receive; the Receive (Rx) icon appears. For clarity, avoid covering the microphone.

Talk Range

Ensure radios are at least 5 feet apart for optimal performance and transmission range.

Monitor Button

Press and hold the Scan/Monitor button for 3 seconds to enter Monitor mode. This allows listening for weak signals on the current channel or adjusting volume when not receiving.

Push-to-Talk Time-out Timer

To prevent accidental transmissions and save battery, the radio emits a warning tone and stops transmitting if the PTT button is held for 60 seconds continuously.

Menu Options

Access various settings via the Menu button. Note that Channels 9-16 require activation and specific country usage permissions.

Menu Navigation Flow:

Selecting the Channel

Press Menu until the channel number flashes. Use '+' or '-' to change the channel. Long press scrolls rapidly. Press PTT or Menu to exit/continue.

To activate Channels 9-16: Press Menu until channel flashes, then press and hold '+' and '-' simultaneously for 3 seconds until a beep and "16 CH" is displayed.

Selecting the Sub-Code

Sub-Codes minimize interference. Press Menu until the code flashes. Use '+' or '-' to select the code. Hold '+' or '-' to speed up scrolling. Press PTT or Menu to exit/continue.

Setting and Transmitting Call Tones

Set call tones via the Menu. Press Menu until the Call Tone icon appears. Use '+' or '-' to select and listen to tones. Press PTT or Menu to exit/continue. Transmit call tones by setting the same channel and Sub-Code and pressing the Call Tone button.

Easy Pairing

This feature programs multiple radios to the same channel and Sub-Code simultaneously. Designate one radio as the "Leader" and program its settings. On "Member" radios, press and hold the button until a beep is heard. The Leader's radio then transmits its settings. Ensure Members' radios are in Easy Pairing mode when the Leader transmits.

Note: The icon will blink on the display during Easy Pairing. If the Leader's radio is set to channels 9-16, Members' radios must also have these channels activated.

Internal Voice Operated Transmission/Voice Operated Transmission (iVOX/VOX)

Transmission is initiated by speaking into the microphone, eliminating the need to press the PTT button. Settings include:

Press Menu until the iVOX or VOX icon appears. The current setting (Off, L1-L3) will flash. Use '+' or '-' to select sensitivity. Press PTT or Menu to exit/continue. A short delay may occur when using iVOX/VOX.

Dual Channel Monitor

Scan the current channel and another channel alternately. To set up, press Menu until the Dual Channel Monitor (2CH) icon appears. Select the channel using '+' or '-' and press Menu. Select the Sub-Code using '+' or '-' and press Menu. Press PTT or wait to activate. The screen alternates between channels. Press Menu to end Dual Channel Monitor. It does not work if the same channel and Sub-Code are selected.

Silent Mode (Vibrate Alert)

Vibrate Alert notifies you of incoming messages, useful in noisy environments. Press Menu until the Vibrate Alert icon appears. The current setting (On/Off) will flash. Use '+' or '-' to change the setting. Press PTT or Menu to exit/continue.

Keypad Tones

Enable or disable keypad tones. Press Menu until the Keypad Tone icon appears. The current setting (On/Off) will flash. Use '+' or '-' to turn On/Off. Press PTT or Menu to confirm/continue.

Roger Tone

Set a unique tone to signal the end of transmission. Press Menu until the Roger Tone icon appears. The current setting (On/Off) will flash. Use '+' or '-' to turn On/Off. Press PTT or Menu to set/continue.

Emergency Alert Mode

The Emergency Alert feature signals group members for help. Upon activation, radios enter an automatic "hands-free" emergency control mode for 30 seconds. Speaker volume maximizes, and a warbling alert tone sounds for 8 seconds, followed by 22 seconds of transmitted audio. During this mode, radio controls are locked. Press and hold the Emergency Alert button for 3 seconds to activate. Release the button to begin the alert tone. No further action is needed for transmission. WARNING: Use only in actual emergencies. Motorola Solutions is not responsible for lack of response.

LED Flashlight

Press the flashlight button to turn the LED flashlight ON. Press again to turn it OFF. Turn off when not in use to conserve battery power.

Keypad Lock

To prevent accidental setting changes, press and hold the Key Lock button until the Key Lock Indicator icon displays. While locked, you can still turn the radio ON/OFF, adjust volume, receive, transmit, send call tones, send Emergency Alert, and monitor channels. Other functions are locked.

Press and hold Key Lock again until the indicator is no longer displayed to unlock.

Scanning

Use the scan function to search channels for transmissions, find group members, or locate unused channels.

Scanning Modes:

Priority Feature: The "Home Channel" (the channel and Sub-Code set when starting the scan) is scanned more frequently.

To start Basic Scanning: Press Scan/Monitor briefly. The Scan icon appears, and the radio scrolls through channels. It stops on matching channel/code combinations. Press PTT within 5 seconds to respond. Scanning resumes 5 seconds after activity ends. Press Scan/Monitor briefly to stop.

To start Advanced Scanning: Set home channel Sub-Code to "zero" or OFF. Press Scan/Monitor briefly. The Scan icon appears, and the radio scrolls through channels without Sub-Code filtering. It stops on any channel with activity. Press PTT within 5 seconds to respond. Scanning resumes 5 seconds after activity ends. Press Scan/Monitor briefly to stop.

Note: Transmissions occur on the "Home Channel" if PTT is pressed during scrolling. You can temporarily remove channels from the scan list by pressing and holding '+' or '-' for 3 seconds (except the Home Channel). Turn the radio OFF/ON or EXIT/re-enter scan mode to restore removed channels. In Advanced Scan, detected codes are used only for one transmission; note the code and set it permanently.
