Garmin Overlander Owner's Manual

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for using the Garmin Overlander device, covering setup, navigation, off-road features, connectivity, and troubleshooting.

Getting Started

Before using the device, ensure it is charged. Update maps and software, set up a Garmin Explore account, mount the device in your vehicle, and set up a vehicle profile. You can then navigate to your destination.

Device Overview: The device features a microphone, volume control, power key, USB port, memory card slot, audio jack, magnetic mount interface, and speaker.

Mounting and Powering the Device in Your Vehicle: Secure the ball adapter to the magnetic mount, clean the windscreen and suction cup, attach the suction cup, align the mount, tighten the knob, and plug in the vehicle power cable. Place the device onto the mount and plug the cable into the vehicle's power outlet.

Turning the device on or off: Press the power key or connect the device to power to turn it on. Hold the power key to turn it off.

Acquiring GPS signals: Turn on the device. Ensure the GPS status icon is visible. If necessary, move to an open area with a clear view of the sky.

Home Screen: The home screen provides access to apps and features. Swipe down to view notifications. Swipe down twice to access quick settings. Hold to customize the wallpaper or add widgets. Select the Drive icon for street navigation, the Explore icon for off-road navigation, or the app drawer for all installed apps.

Opening an App: Select an app shortcut from the home screen or the app drawer.

Adjusting the screen brightness: The device can automatically adjust brightness or be manually adjusted via the notification panel or settings menu.

Vehicle Profiles: Set up different vehicle profiles to customize routing and alerts based on vehicle characteristics. A warning is provided that not all road conditions or restrictions may be accounted for.

Driver awareness features and alerts: The device provides audible alerts for various road conditions and potential hazards, such as speed limit warnings, animal crossings, and sharp curves. These alerts can be enabled or disabled.

Red light and speed cameras: The device can alert you to reported speed and red light cameras. Ensure your device is updated with the latest camera database.

Street Navigation: Plan routes to destinations using various methods, including searching by location, address, or points of interest. Routes can be customized with shaping points, detours, and avoidances.

Starting a route: Search for a location, select it, and choose to start with the recommended route or an alternative route. Routes can be edited and multiple destinations can be added.

Going home: Enter your home location to easily navigate home.

Your route on the map: The device displays turn-by-turn directions, lane guidance, and estimated arrival times. Map layers can be customized.

Active lane guidance: Provides visual cues for the correct lane on complex turns and exits.

Viewing turns and directions: Access upcoming turns and directions from the map screen.

Arriving at your destination: The device provides information as you approach your destination, including parking suggestions.

Parking Near Your Destination: Search for parking spots based on various criteria.

Changing Your Active Route: Add or reorder destinations in your active route.

Shaping your route: Manually adjust the route's course.

Taking a detour: Reroute around specific distances or roads.

Changing the route calculation mode: Select between faster time, off-road, or shorter distance.

Stopping the route: Stop navigation manually.

Using Suggested Routes: The device may suggest routes based on your travel history.

Avoiding Delays, Tolls and Areas: Customize route preferences to avoid traffic delays, toll roads, toll stickers, environmental zones, and specific roads or areas.

Finding and saving locations: Search for points of interest, addresses, towns, and junctions. Save locations for future use.

Points of Interest: Browse and search for various POIs organized by category.

Navigating to a Garmin Explore Location: Navigate to locations saved in your Garmin Explore account.

Finding a location by category: Search for POIs by category.

Searching within a category: Utilize quick search lists for recently found locations.

Finding Campsites, Motor Home parks, Motor Home services, National Parks, iOverlander™ points of interest, HISTORY® points of interest: Specific search functions for various types of POIs.

Foursquare: Search and check into Foursquare locations.

TripAdvisor: Search for TripAdvisor points of interest and ratings.

Navigating to points of interest within a venue: Navigate to specific locations within larger venues like shopping centers.

Exploring a venue: View and navigate to points of interest within a venue.

Finding a location using the search bar: Use the search bar to find locations by category, brand, address, or town name.

Location Search Results: View search results in a list or on the map.

Changing the search area: Search for locations in areas other than your current location.

Custom points of interest: Create and use custom POIs with alerts.

Installing POI Loader: Software for installing custom POIs.

Parking: Find parking based on availability, type, and price.

Understanding Parking Colours and Symbols: Interpret parking information on the map.

Search tools: Find junctions, towns, and locations by coordinates.

Viewing history: Access a history of recently found locations.

Clearing the list of recently found places: Remove locations from the history list.

Viewing current location information: Access the Where Am I? page for location details.

Finding emergency services and fuel: Locate nearby hospitals, police stations, and fuel stations.

Off-Road Navigation

Garmin Explore: Plan trips, use cloud storage, and sync data with your device. The Garmin Explore app is available on the device and for smartphones.

Logging in to a Garmin Explore Account: Set up or log in to your Garmin Explore account to sync data.

Map: Download and update Garmin Explore maps for offline use.

Filtering Map Data: Filter map data by collections or activities.

Creating a Waypoint: Create and save waypoints using the Garmin Explore app.

Create a Route: Create custom routes within the Garmin Explore app.

Library: View and manage your saved waypoints, tracks, and routes.

Navigating to a favourite location: Start a route to a saved location from your library.

Creating a Collection: Organize saved items into collections.

Viewing Collections: Access and view your collections.

Synchronising Garmin Explore Account Data: Sync data between your device and your Garmin Explore account.

Importing GPX Files with a Memory Card: Import waypoints, routes, and tracks from a microSD card.

Exporting GPX Files with a Memory Card: Export waypoints, routes, and tracks to a microSD card.

Recording Tracks: Record your path and transmit it over the satellite network.

Changing Tracking Intervals: Adjust how often track points are recorded and transmitted.

Stopping Tracking: Stop the track recording.

Pitch and Roll

WARNING: The Pitch and Roll application is for informational purposes only. Always calibrate the device and use caution. Failure to account for vehicle and environmental conditions could lead to serious injury.

Calibrating Pitch and Roll: Set the pitch and roll angles to zero on a flat surface.

Adjusting Warning Angles: Set the angles at which pitch or roll alerts are activated.

Enabling or Disabling Warning Angle Alerts: Enable or disable pitch and roll notifications and audible alerts.

Viewing the Altimeter, Barometer and Compass: Access ABC sensor data.

Calibrating the compass: Calibrate the electronic compass outdoors for accuracy.

inReach Remote

Control your inReach device using the Overlander device. Send messages, view weather, and trigger SOS alerts.

Connecting an inReach Device: Pair your inReach device with the Overlander device.

Sending an inReach Message: Send messages to contacts.

SOS: Contact emergency services in a real emergency situation.

Initiating an SOS Rescue: Slide the SOS icon to initiate a rescue.

Cancelling an SOS Rescue: Cancel an SOS rescue if no longer needed.

Hands-free calling: Connect your phone and headset via Bluetooth for hands-free calls.

Pairing your phone: Pair your phone with the Overlander device.

Pairing Additional Bluetooth Devices: Pair headsets or other Bluetooth devices.

Placing a call: Dial a number, select a contact, or use presets.

Receiving a call: Answer or dismiss incoming calls.

Using in-call options: Access options during a call, such as transferring audio or using the dial pad.

Saving a Phone Number as a Preset: Save frequently called numbers for quick access.

Disconnecting a Bluetooth device: Temporarily disconnect a Bluetooth device.

Deleting a paired Bluetooth device: Remove a paired Bluetooth device.

Traffic

NOTICE: Garmin is not responsible for the accuracy or timeliness of traffic information.

Receiving traffic data using a traffic receiver: Connect a traffic receiver cable to receive traffic data.

Enabling traffic: Enable traffic data in the navigation settings.

Viewing traffic on the map: See color-coded traffic flow and delays.

Searching for traffic incidents: Find and view traffic incidents on the map.

Voice Command: Use voice commands to operate the device.

Setting the wake-up phrase: Customize the wake-up phrase (e.g., "OK Garmin").

Activating voice command: Use the wake-up phrase and speak commands.

Voice Command tips: Speak clearly, reduce background noise, and follow on-screen prompts.

Starting a route using Voice command: Find places and start routes using voice commands.
