This document details the unit's functions. The included Quick Manual provides brief instructions for connecting the unit to a network and playing music files from a mobile device. Keep the Quick Manual handy for future reference.

Using the Unit

This unit is a wireless streaming speaker that can be used with a home network or audio system to play audio from Internet radio, a media server (computer or NAS), AirPlay, or Bluetooth devices connected to the same network.

The unit features a compact size but delivers excellent sound thanks to Yamaha's exclusive Digital Signal Processor (DSP).

The dedicated MusicCast CONTROLLER app allows you to operate the unit and set up a home audio network. (Refer to page 7 for "Using MusicCast CONTROLLER to Connect to a Network".)

Using the Unit as a Wireless Surround Speaker

The unit can be combined with a Yamaha amplifier or sound bar to function as wireless surround speakers. (Refer to page 17 for "Using the Unit as a Surround Speaker (MusicCast Surround Function)".)

Combined Use with MusicCast Devices

Listen to Internet radio stations in different rooms or play music files. Use MusicCast to enjoy music throughout your home. (Refer to page 15 for "Setting Up a MusicCast Network".)

Top Panel

The top panel features touch-sensitive controls.

Indicators

  1. Power Indicator: Illuminates permanently when the unit is powered on.
  2. Input Source Indicators: Illuminate when an input source is selected.
  3. Alarm Indicator: Illuminates when the alarm is set.
  4. Wireless LAN Indicator: Illuminates permanently when the unit is wirelessly connected to a wireless LAN router. If MusicCast Stereo or MusicCast Surround is used, this indicator remains lit even if the unit is connected via a network cable.
  5. Bluetooth Indicator: Illuminates when Bluetooth is active.

Control Panel

The control panel is touch-sensitive. Tap icons with your finger to control functions.

  1. Power/CONNECT Button: Powers the unit on/off and initiates network connection.
  2. Input Source Selection Button: Cycles through input sources (NETWORK → BLUETOOTH → DIGITAL → AUX 1 → AUX 2).
  3. Volume Control Buttons: Adjusts the sound volume.
  4. Alarm Button: Sets the alarm.

Auto Standby: The unit automatically enters standby mode if no audio is played or no operation is performed for a specified period (20 minutes for NETWORK/BLUETOOTH, 8 hours for DIGITAL/AUX). This function can be disabled in "Option Settings" (page 22).

Rear Panel

The rear panel contains various ports:

  1. Power Connector: For connecting the power cable.
  2. AUX 1 Terminal (Stereo Mini-jack): For connecting external audio devices.
  3. AUX 2 Terminal (RCA): For connecting external audio devices.
  4. DIGITAL Terminal (Optical Digital): For connecting external digital audio devices.
  5. SERVICE ONLY Terminal: For maintenance purposes.
  6. NETWORK Terminal: For wired network connection.

Using MusicCast CONTROLLER to Connect to a Network

Connect the unit to a power outlet using the supplied power cable.

Note: The touch-sensitive components of the unit will adjust when the power cable is connected. This adjustment takes approximately five seconds. Avoid using the unit during this period to prevent incorrect operation.

Connect the unit to a network:

  1. Download and install the MusicCast CONTROLLER app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Use the app to configure network settings. Follow the on-screen instructions.

The unit can connect to a network via wired or wireless connection. A network cable (sold separately) is required for a wired connection.

Note: For wired connections, use a shielded, twisted-pair (STP) standard network cable (straight, Category 5 or higher; sold separately) connected to the NETWORK terminal on the rear panel. Refer to your network device documentation for more information on internet connections.

Security Software Note: Security software on your computer or network device settings (like firewalls) may prevent the unit from accessing your computer or internet radio stations. Adjust your security software or network settings to allow access.

Playback from an Input Source

Use the MusicCast CONTROLLER app to play music. Select a registered room to open the input source selection screen, which provides access to various sources.

Listening to Music Stored on a Mobile Device

Play music files stored on your mobile device (where the MusicCast CONTROLLER app is installed).

Note: Supported audio file formats vary by mobile device. Consult your mobile device's documentation for compatible formats.

Steps:

  1. Select a registered room on the unit.
  2. Select an input source (e.g., "Mobile Device").
  3. Browse and select a music file.

Listening to Internet Radio

Listen to internet radio stations from around the world.

Steps:

  1. Select "Internet Radio" as the input source.
  2. Browse and select a radio station.

Listening to Streaming Services

Use the MusicCast CONTROLLER app to listen to streaming services. Select your registered room and choose the desired streaming service. Refer to the MusicCast CONTROLLER app documentation for more information.

Notes:

Listening to Music Stored on a Media Server

Play music files stored on a computer or Network Attached Storage (NAS) connected to the same network as the unit. The computer or NAS acts as a media server.

Note: Connect the unit and the computer (or NAS) to the same wireless LAN router (access point). Refer to page 30 for compatible file formats.

1. Configure Media Content Sharing

Media content sharing must be enabled to play music from a media server. The following steps use Windows Media Player 12 as an example. Follow the on-screen instructions.

2. Play a Music File

Steps:

  1. Select "Server" as the input source.
  2. Browse and select a music file from your media server.

Listening to Music via AirPlay

Play music files from iTunes or iPhone/iPad/iPod touch using the AirPlay function.

Note: Connect the unit, computer (or NAS), and iPhone to the same wireless LAN router (access point).

  1. Start iTunes or view the music playback screen on your iPhone. The AirPlay icon will appear on the screen when iTunes or the iPhone recognizes the unit.
  2. Click the AirPlay icon in iTunes or tap it on your iPhone, and select the unit (a registered room) as the audio output destination.
  3. Play a music file. The unit's input source will change to AirPlay, and music will begin to play.

Note: If the icon does not appear, check that the unit and computer (or iPhone) are correctly connected to the wireless LAN router.

Listening to Music via Bluetooth

The unit can play music from Bluetooth-enabled devices such as mobile devices or digital music players. Refer to your Bluetooth device's documentation for Bluetooth connection information.

Note:

Listening to Music on a Bluetooth Device

Audio can be played from a Bluetooth device wirelessly.

  1. Select "Bluetooth" as the input source.
  2. Connect a Bluetooth device to the unit. Select this unit from the list of Bluetooth devices on your Bluetooth device. The indicator will illuminate permanently once the connection is established.
  3. Play a music file.

Note: If a Bluetooth connection cannot be established, remove the unit's registration from the Bluetooth device and try steps 1-2 again.

Listening to Music from External Devices

Music from an external device, such as a CD player, can be played through this unit.

Notes:

  1. Disconnect the power cable from the power outlet and connect the external devices to the unit.
  2. Connect the power cable to a power outlet and turn on the unit.
  3. Select DIGITAL, AUX 1, or AUX 2 as the input source.
  4. Play the connected external device. Refer to the documentation included with the external device for playback information.

Pairing the Unit with MusicCast Devices

Multiple units can be used, or the unit can be paired with other MusicCast devices for higher quality audio. A home audio network can be configured using MusicCast CONTROLLER.

Setting Up a MusicCast Network

Register the unit in the MusicCast CONTROLLER app, then register other MusicCast devices in the app.

Note: To register the unit in the app, refer to page 7, "Using MusicCast CONTROLLER to Connect to a Network".

  1. Tap the Settings icon.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to register MusicCast devices.

Using Two Units (MusicCast Stereo Function)

Although this unit is a stereo speaker, two units can be used together as stereo speakers for a live performance feel. Assign one unit as the left speaker and the other as the right speaker.

When using this function, update the firmware of the units to the latest versions (page 24 "Firmware Updates").

  1. Register both units in the same room in the MusicCast CONTROLLER app (refer to page 15 "Setting Up a MusicCast Network").
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions in the app to configure the settings.

Note:

Connecting the Unit to a Network Subwoofer

The unit can connect to a network subwoofer with MusicCast for more dynamic bass sounds. Follow the on-screen instructions in the MusicCast CONTROLLER app to register the unit and a compatible network subwoofer in the same location (page 7 "Using MusicCast CONTROLLER to Connect to a Network"). Refer to the network subwoofer's documentation for more information. Deactivate any alarms before connecting the network subwoofer.

Using the Unit as a Surround Speaker (MusicCast Surround Function)

MusicCast Surround compatible devices, such as AV receivers or Sound Bars, can be paired with the units for multi-channel audio enjoyment.

When using this function, update the firmware of the unit and MusicCast Surround compatible devices to the latest versions (page 24 "Firmware Updates").

  1. Register the units and a compatible AV receiver or Sound Bar in the same location in the MusicCast CONTROLLER app (page 15 "Setting Up a MusicCast Network").
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions in the app to configure the settings. Configure MusicCast Surround on the AV receiver or sound bar being paired with the unit.

Utility Functions

Favorites

Register favorite content such as Internet radio stations or songs on the unit or in the MusicCast app. Once registered, favorites can be easily selected for listening. Up to three favorite items can be registered on the unit, and up to 40 via the MusicCast CONTROLLER app.

The following input sources can be registered as favorites:

Registering Favorites on the Unit

  1. Use the MusicCast CONTROLLER app to play the input source you wish to register.
  2. Press and hold one of the buttons (1, 2, or 3) on the unit for at least three seconds during playback. The indicator will blink three times, and the input source will be assigned to that favorite number.

Playing Favorite Input Sources

Press one of the buttons (1, 2, or 3) on the unit.

Note: Favorites assigned to buttons 1, 2, and 3 on the unit are also assigned to "Favorites" 1, 2, and 3 in the MusicCast CONTROLLER app. If you change a favorite on the unit or in the app, the change will be reflected in both places.

Alarm

Use the MusicCast CONTROLLER app to set an alarm. The alarm can emit a beep, play network content from a media server (computer or NAS), or play an Internet radio station.

Alarm Type

There are three alarm types: Music, Beeps, and Music + Beeps.

1. Set the Alarm

Use the MusicCast CONTROLLER app to set the alarm. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Note: If "Music Only" is selected and the specified network content is unavailable, no alarm will sound. It is recommended to select "Music + Beeps" or "Beeps Only" for important alarms.

2. Pulse the Alarm Button on the Unit

Press the alarm button on the unit. The indicator will illuminate permanently, and the alarm will be activated. Pressing the button toggles the alarm status between activated and deactivated.

Note: When the alarm is deactivated, its settings are saved. Pressing the button again will apply the last specified alarm setting.

Snooze Function

The snooze function can be set via the MusicCast CONTROLLER app. It stops the alarm and resets it to sound again five minutes later.

If this function is active, pressing any control panel button will stop the alarm temporarily (snooze). To completely stop the alarm, press and hold any control panel button for at least five seconds.

Note: If the alarm is not stopped manually, it will stop automatically after one hour.

Note: If "Music + Beeps" is selected and you press a control panel button while the alarm is sounding, only the beeps will stop. Pressing a button again will stop the music as well. The alarm will sound again after five minutes. To stop both music and beeps completely, press and hold any control panel button for at least five seconds.

Child Lock Function

This unit has a child lock function. When activated, certain control panel operations are disabled to prevent unintended or accidental operations. This function is disabled by default.

If the child lock is active, only the following functions can be performed via the control panel:

Activating/Deactivating the Child Lock Function

  1. If the unit is in standby mode, press and hold the and buttons simultaneously on the control panel for at least five seconds. The AUX 1 and AUX 2 indicators will blink three times, activating the child lock.
  2. To deactivate, repeat step 1. The AUX 1 and AUX 2 indicators will blink twice, deactivating the child lock.

Note: If no operation is performed for at least ten seconds after step 1, the unit will return to standby mode without activating or deactivating the child lock. Repeat the operations from step 1.

Option Settings

The following options can be changed when the unit is in option setting mode. If the unit is in standby mode, press and hold the and buttons on the control panel for at least five seconds to enter option setting mode.

Note: If no operation is performed for at least ten seconds, the option setting mode will be canceled.

Menu Item Default Value Instructions
Initialize Unit - Press and hold the G/CONNECT button on the control panel for at least three seconds. The indicator will blink twice, and the unit will be initialized.
Network Standby* Activated Press and hold the 1 button on the control panel for at least three seconds. The NETWORK indicator will blink twice, and this function will be deactivated. Repeating this operation will alternately activate and deactivate the function. If this function is activated, the NETWORK indicator will blink three times.
Auto Standby Activated Press and hold the 2 button on the control panel for at least three seconds. The indicator will blink twice, and this function will be deactivated. Repeating this operation will alternately activate and deactivate the function. If this function is activated, the indicator will blink three times.

* This option activates or deactivates network operations when the unit is in standby mode. If standby network mode is deactivated, network operations are interrupted while the unit is in standby. An "Eco standby mode" is activated, minimizing power consumption. The following functions and operations are not available in Eco standby mode. To perform or use them, press the /CONNECT button on the unit to power it on.

Thanks to its advanced energy-saving design, this product offers reduced power consumption, not exceeding two watts in Network Standby mode.

Firmware Updates

The unit's firmware can be updated if it is connected to the Internet. When new firmware is released, the MusicCast CONTROLLER app will display a notification. Follow the on-screen instructions in the app to update the unit's firmware.

Update Progress Indicators

The update progress can be checked using the unit's indicators.

Status Indicators (NETWORK, BLUETOOTH, DIGITAL, AUX 1, AUX 2, STATUS) Description

Update completed successfully Illuminates permanently. If the update was successful, the unit will turn off and then on again automatically.
Update error Indicators blink or illuminate depending on the cause of the failure. Disconnect the power cable, plug it back in, and try updating the firmware again.

Note:

Using iPhone Settings to Connect the Unit to a Network

If the unit is powered on for the first time after purchase or after initialization, the indicator on the unit will blink, and the unit will automatically start searching for an iOS device, such as an iPhone. Network settings from the iOS device can be applied to the unit for easy connection to an existing wireless network.

Note:

  1. While the indicator is blinking, open the Wi-Fi settings on your iOS device and specify this unit as the AirPlay speaker.
  2. Select the wireless network (access point) to which you want to connect the unit. Once the network settings are shared, the unit will automatically connect to the selected wireless network.

Troubleshooting

Consult the following table if the unit is not functioning correctly. If the problem is not listed in the table, or if symptoms persist after following the indicated instructions, turn off the unit, disconnect it from the power outlet, and contact your nearest authorized Yamaha service center or dealer.

General

Problem Cause Solution
The unit does not turn on. The power cable is not connected correctly. Ensure the power cable is securely inserted into the unit's power connector and the power outlet.
The touch sensors do not respond. A touch sensor was accidentally pressed or touched while the unit was starting up (approximately five seconds after connecting the power cable to a power outlet). Avoid accidentally pressing or touching the touch sensors during unit startup. Do not attempt to activate the unit until it has fully started up (page 5).
The unit turns off immediately after being turned on. The internal microprocessor has been blocked due to an external electrical surge (like lightning or excessive static electricity, etc.) or a drop in the power supply voltage. Disconnect the unit from the power outlet, wait at least 30 seconds, and then reconnect it to the power outlet.
The unit does not function correctly. The internal microprocessor has been blocked. Disconnect the unit from the power outlet, wait at least 30 seconds, and then reconnect it to the power outlet.
The unit cannot be controlled. An input source has not been selected correctly. Use the MusicCast CONTROLLER app or the unit's control panel to select an input source (page 8).
The unit emits no sound. External devices are not firmly connected to the AUX 1, AUX 2, or DIGITAL terminals. Ensure external devices are firmly connected to the unit's terminals. If there are no connection problems, check if the cables are damaged.
The unit emits no sound. The volume level is set to the minimum or muted. Turn up the volume.
Electronic interference from nearby equipment causes noise. The unit is too close to other electronic equipment. Separate the unit from other electronic equipment.

Network

Problem Cause Solution
Cannot configure connection with the MusicCast CONTROLLER app. The mobile device is not connected to the wireless LAN router (access point). Connect the mobile device to the wireless LAN router and use MusicCast CONTROLLER to configure connection settings.
The MusicCast CONTROLLER app does not recognize the unit. The unit is powered off. Turn on the unit.
The MusicCast CONTROLLER app does not recognize the unit. The unit and the mobile device are not on the same network. Check network connections and wireless LAN router settings, then connect the unit and mobile device to the same network.
Network function does not work. A wireless LAN router that allows multiple SSIDs is being used. The network router's divisor may be blocking access to the unit. When connecting a mobile device, use an SSID that can access the unit. Try connecting to the main SSID.
Network function does not work. Network information (IP address) was not obtained correctly. Activate the DHCP server function on the router.
Network function does not work. The unit is starting up (approximately 20 seconds after connecting the power cable to a power outlet). Do not attempt to use the unit until it has fully started up.
Network function does not work. An IPv6 router is being used. Use an IPv4 compatible router.
Files are not displayed (or played) from the media server (computer or NAS). The file format is not compatible with the unit or the media server (computer or NAS). Ensure you use a file format compatible with both the unit and the media server. Refer to page 30 for music file compatibility information.
Files are not displayed (or played) from the media server (computer or NAS). Media content sharing settings are incorrect. Configure sharing settings to allow the unit to access the media server's folders (page 10).
Files are not displayed (or played) from the media server (computer or NAS). Security software installed on the media server is blocking access to the unit. Check the settings of the security software installed on the media server.
Files are not displayed (or played) from the media server (computer or NAS). The unit and the media server are not connected to the same network. Check network connections and wireless LAN router settings, then connect the unit and media server to the same network.
The MusicCast CONTROLLER app does not recognize the media server (computer or NAS). The unit and media server are not connected to the same network. Check network connections and wireless LAN router settings, then connect the unit and media server to the same network.

Internet Radio

Problem Cause Solution
Cannot play Internet radio. The selected Internet radio station is disconnected. The radio station may be experiencing network issues, may not be broadcasting, or its services may be suspended. Try playing the station later or select another station.
Cannot play Internet radio. The selected Internet radio station is currently silent. Some internet radio stations go silent at certain times of the day. If this occurs, there are no reception problems, but no sound is being broadcast. Try the station later or select another station.
Firmware update error. Network access is restricted by the network device's firewall settings (wireless LAN router, etc.). Check the device's firewall settings. Internet radio can only be played through the port specified by each radio station. The port number varies by radio station.
The unit cannot connect to the Internet via a wireless LAN router (access point). Network connection is unstable. Try again later.
The unit cannot connect to the Internet via a wireless LAN router (access point). The wireless LAN router is powered off. Turn on the wireless LAN router.
The unit cannot connect to the Internet via a wireless LAN router (access point). The unit and the wireless LAN router are too far apart. Move the unit closer to the wireless LAN router.
The unit cannot connect to the Internet via a wireless LAN router (access point). There is an obstacle between the unit and the wireless LAN router. Move the unit and the wireless LAN router to a location with a direct line of sight between them (no obstacles).
The MusicCast CONTROLLER app does not detect a wireless network. The unit's wireless LAN function is deactivated. Activate the unit's wireless LAN function (page 23).
The MusicCast CONTROLLER app does not detect a wireless network. A device operating in the 2.4 GHz band (microwave oven, wireless network device, etc.) is interfering with wireless communication. Turn off the device in question or move it away from the unit and the wireless LAN router.
My iPhone does not recognize the unit when using AirPlay. Network access is restricted by the firewall settings of the network device (wireless LAN router, access point). Check the firewall settings of the wireless LAN router.
My iPhone does not recognize the unit when using AirPlay. A wireless LAN router that allows multiple SSIDs is being used. The network router's divisor may be blocking access to the unit. When connecting a mobile device, use an SSID that can access the unit. Try connecting to the main SSID.

Bluetooth

Problem Cause Solution
Cannot connect the unit to a Bluetooth device. The Bluetooth device does not support the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP). Use a Bluetooth device that supports the A2DP profile.
Cannot connect the unit to a Bluetooth device. The access key for devices such as a Bluetooth adapter is not "0000". Use a Bluetooth device with the access key "0000".
Cannot connect the unit to a Bluetooth device. The unit and the Bluetooth device are too far apart. Move the Bluetooth device closer to the unit.
No sound is emitted, or sound is interrupted during playback. A device operating in the 2.4 GHz band (microwave oven, wireless network device, etc.) is interfering with wireless communication. Move the unit and the Bluetooth device away from devices causing interference. If your wireless LAN router supports the 5 GHz band, connect network devices via the 5 GHz band.
No sound is emitted, or sound is interrupted during playback. The unit is already connected to another Bluetooth device. End the current Bluetooth connection and connect to the new device.
No sound is emitted, or sound is interrupted during playback. The unit's Bluetooth function is deactivated. Activate the unit's Bluetooth function (page 23).
No sound is emitted, or sound is interrupted during playback. The Bluetooth connection has been interrupted. Re-establish the Bluetooth connection (page 12).

Move the unit and the Bluetooth device away from devices causing interference. If your wireless LAN router supports the 5 GHz band, connect network devices via the 5 GHz band.
No sound is emitted, or sound is interrupted during playback. The Bluetooth device is not configured to transmit audio signals to this unit. On the Bluetooth device, select this unit as the audio output destination.
No sound is emitted, or sound is interrupted during playback. The volume level of the Bluetooth device is set too low. Turn up the volume on the Bluetooth device.
