INTRODUCTION The WA-87 R2 TS is an authentic reproduction of one of the greatest studio mics ever designed. Based on a classic 60s circuit that is widely considered to be the top choice for clarity in vocals and acoustic instruments, we spent countless hours over two revisions trying to get closer to the original vintage 87s than any current producer has. With the WA-87 R2 line of mics, we believe we've achieved that goal. The WA-87 R2 uses top-quality components like an NOS Fairchild transistor and high-bandwidth polystyrene and film capacitors from Wima. The WA-87 R2 uses a custom-wound CineMag USA output transformer. We also employed the same capsule from the first version of the WA-87, which was designed to the exact specifications of the capsules found in vintage mics from the 60s and 70s. The result is an incredibly accurate sonic replica of arguably the widest-used studio microphone in popular recording history! Stunning Sound & Appearance - Times Two The WA-87 R2 TS mics are encased in a heavy, strong and large nickel-plated brass body with a limited edition "titanium" colored finish. The rounded head basket design adds additional space around the capsule for a more pleasing, open sonic signature. With authentic vintage warmth and a smooth detailed top end, we truly believe this mic performs on par with microphones costing five times as much or more. The Capsule The K-87 style capsule inside the WA-87 R2 is an authentic reproduction of the K7-style capsule found in the most prized vintage 87 mics from the late 60s and early 70s. Unlike inexpensive condenser capsules, the capsule inside the WA-87 R2 is able to capture intricate detail and clarity in the midrange, all the way through to treble frequencies without being too harsh in the highs. The bass is tight and natural, making the WA-87 R2 a great mic to capture any acoustic source.
The Transformer The WA-87 R2 utilizes a custom, American-Made CineMag output transformer. The transformer inside the WA-87 R2 adds a richness to the midrange and harmonic overtones to the mic that can only be heard on vintage microphones and the highest quality recreations. Even though, like the original, the WA-87 R2 is excellent at delivering clarity and brilliance, the transformer ensures that the mic still has all the warmth and sizzle of a vintage condenser mic.
The High-Pass Filter High-pass filters help remove unwanted noise that can muddy up recordings, especially in mixes with dense track counts. The high-pass filter switch on the WA-87 R2 engages an 80hz high pass filter for reducing rumble and other sub-bass audio information. To engage the high pass filter, flip the switch towards the "bent" line, for a flat response (high-pass disengaged), flip the switch towards the flat line.
The 10dB Pad The -10dB pad on the WA-87 R2 helps remove sensitivity from the mic at the source - the capsule. This is best used when working with high-SPL sources to add a little headroom to avoid unwanted distortion and add clarity to the tracking signal. To engage the pad, flip the switch towards the `-10dB' marker, to use the normal output level, flip the switch towards the `0' marker.
The Pattern Select Switch This switch selects the polar pattern for the WA-87 R2's capsule. The three polar pattern options are (from left to right) Omnidirectional, Cardioid, and Figure-Eight. The cardioid pattern will give a focused "right in front" sound, rejecting noise from the sides and back. Omni will deliver the spacious sound of the source and the room - including reflections, no noise rejection. The figure-8 pattern will reproduce sound from directly in front of and behind the mic, rejecting noise from the sides.
The Accessories The WA-87 R2 TS package comes with separate matching titanium-finished shock mounts and hard mounts for each mic. The set also includes individual leatherette cases for each microphone, and the whole package comes in a genuine SKB molded case for ultimate protection from the rigors of transportation.
