Exterior Highlights:

Performance and Drivetrain

Inspiring driving and responsive handling are hallmarks of the BMW X. The most recent iteration of xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive imbues the vehicle with confidence-boosting grip on nearly any road for optimum traction, regardless of driving conditions. Two powerful yet fuel-efficient engine options provide the best of both worlds.

Engine Options:

Both engines incorporate TwinPower Turbo technology, High Precision Direct Injection, Valvetronic, and Double-VANOS technologies for award-winning performance and reduced emissions.

The standard 8-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission offers smooth, efficient shifts, contributing to higher mpg ratings and a more comfortable drive. It can also skip gears for quicker acceleration.

Chassis and Safety:

On the Road: A feeling of unparalleled security thanks to a host of BMW driving technologies. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) provides remarkable tenacity on slippery surfaces. Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) allows for additional wheelspin on loose surfaces. Start-off Assistant prevents rolling downhill. Hill Descent Control (HDC) assists on steep descents. Adaptive Headlights with LED Corona headlight-rings swivel to follow road curves, enhancing night visibility.

Passive Safety: Six airbags (front, side-impact, Head Protection System), passenger cell with door-anchoring system, integrated rollover sensor, and a redesigned hood for pedestrian protection.

Tires: Run-flat tires maintain shape and position even after a complete loss of pressure, allowing continued driving to a safe area. Tire Pressure Monitor alerts drivers to pressure drops.

In Demand: An Interview with Exterior Designer Erik Goplen

Erik Goplen, automotive designer at BMW Group DesignworksUSA, discusses the design philosophy behind the BMW X.

What tells the viewer they're looking at the BMW X?

The size has been increased over its predecessor, providing greater presence. Typical BMW SAV characteristics and similarities to the previous BMW X are evident. The "three-eyed face" of the BMW SAV family, with double round headlights and high-mounted foglights, is distinctive. The Hofmeister kink is positioned higher, lending the windows a special SAV aesthetic. The L-shape rear lights and available Xenon Headlights align with BMW style.

What impression did you hope to make?

The BMW X needed to be instantly recognizable as a member of the BMW SAV family and the successor to the previous BMW X. It represents powerful agility and a sturdy presence, achieved through typical SAV proportions like upright kidney grilles, a shortened hood, and a steeply slanted rear window. The aim was to make the BMW X appear more mature, a logical "next step."

Other distinguishing BMW features?

The typical double round headlights feature a clear, simplified design topped by distinctive chrome "eyebrows" for a more determined look. Classic convex-concave surfaces create a shimmering interplay of light and shadow.

Favorite design parts?

Clear side contours curve upwards sharply after the front wheel arch, leading to the rear lights. An additional contour runs along the rear wheel arch to emphasize powerful agility. Side indicators are refined through integration in specially molded casings.

Take on the hood contours?

The hood is a work of art in modern metalworking, making a strong statement. Its strongly defined lines bring out the sporty and robust appearance of the front end, a distinguishing feature of all BMW SAVs.
