Cordless circular saw safety warnings
Cutting procedures
- DANGER: Keep hands away from cutting area and blade. Use second hand on auxiliary handle or motor housing.
- Do not reach underneath the workpiece; the guard does not protect you there.
- Adjust cutting depth so less than a full tooth is visible below the workpiece.
- Never hold the workpiece in your hands or across your leg. Secure it to a stable platform.
- Hold the tool by insulated gripping surfaces when cutting near hidden wiring.
- When ripping, use a rip fence or straight edge guide for accuracy and to reduce binding.
- Always use blades with correct size and shape for arbour holes.
- Never use damaged or incorrect blade washers or bolts.
Kickback causes and related warnings
Kickback is a sudden reaction from a pinched, jammed, or misaligned blade, causing the saw to lift and move towards the operator. It can occur when the kerf closes, the blade twists, or the back edge digs into the wood.
Kickback is caused by misuse or incorrect procedures and can be avoided by taking precautions:
- Maintain a firm grip with both hands and position your arms to resist kickback forces. Position your body to the side of the blade, not in line with it.
- When the blade binds or you interrupt a cut, release the trigger and hold the saw motionless until the blade stops. Do not remove the saw or pull it backward while the blade is in motion. Investigate and correct the cause of binding.
- When restarting a saw in the workpiece, center the blade in the kerf.
- Support large panels to minimize pinching and kickback. Panels can sag under their own weight.
- Do not use dull or damaged blades; they cause excessive friction, binding, and kickback.
- Ensure blade depth and bevel adjusting levers are tight and secure before cutting.
- Use extra caution when sawing into existing walls or blind areas.
- ALWAYS hold the tool firmly with both hands. NEVER place your hand, leg, or body part under the tool base or behind the saw, especially during cross-cuts.
- Place the wider portion of the saw base on a solidly supported part of the workpiece. Clamp short or small workpieces. DO NOT TRY TO HOLD SHORT PIECES BY HAND!
- Never force the saw. Push at a speed that allows the blade to cut without slowing. Forcing can cause uneven cuts, loss of accuracy, and kickback.
Lower guard function
- Check the lower guard for proper closing before each use. Do not operate if it does not move freely and close instantly. Never clamp or tie the lower guard open. If dropped, it may be bent. Raise it with the retracting handle and ensure it moves freely and does not touch the blade or other parts.
- Check the lower guard spring operation. If not functioning properly, it needs servicing. Sluggish operation may be due to damaged parts, deposits, or debris.
- The lower guard may be retracted manually only for special cuts (plunge cuts, compound cuts). Release it as soon as the blade enters the material. For all other sawing, it should operate automatically.
- Always ensure the lower guard covers the blade before placing the saw down. An exposed, coasting blade can cause the saw to walk backward. Be aware of the blade stopping time.
- To check the lower guard: open it by hand, release, and watch it close. Ensure the retracting handle does not touch the tool housing. Leaving the blade exposed is VERY DANGEROUS.
Additional safety warnings
- Use extra caution with damp wood, pressure-treated lumber, or wood with knots. Maintain smooth advancement to avoid overheating blade tips.
- Do not attempt to remove cut material while the blade is moving. Wait until it stops.
- Avoid cutting nails. Inspect and remove nails from lumber before cutting.
- Before setting the tool down, ensure the guard has closed and the blade has stopped.
- Never attempt to saw with the circular saw held upside down in a vise.
- Some materials contain toxic chemicals. Prevent dust inhalation and skin contact. Follow material supplier safety data.
- Do not stop blades by lateral pressure.
- Do not use abrasive wheels.
- Only use saw blades with the diameter marked on the tool or specified in the manual. Incorrect size may affect guarding or guard operation.
- Keep blades sharp and clean. Gum and pitch slow the saw and increase kickback potential. Clean blades with gum/pitch remover, hot water, or kerosene. Never use gasoline.
- Wear a dust mask and hearing protection.
- Always use the saw blade intended for the material being cut.
- Only use saw blades marked with a speed equal to or higher than the speed marked on the tool.
- (For European countries only) Always use blades conforming to EN847-1.
- Place the tool and parts on a flat, stable surface.
WARNING: Do not let comfort or familiarity replace strict adherence to safety rules. Misuse or failure to follow rules may cause serious personal injury.
