Kickback causes and related warnings

Kickback is a sudden reaction from a pinched, jammed, or misaligned blade, causing the saw to lift and move towards the operator. It can occur when the kerf closes, the blade twists, or the back edge digs into the wood.

Kickback is caused by misuse or incorrect procedures and can be avoided by taking precautions:

Tips for maintaining maximum battery life

Functional Description

CAUTION: Always ensure the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before adjusting or checking functions.

Installing or removing battery cartridge

CAUTION: Always switch off the tool before installing or removing the battery cartridge.

CAUTION: Hold the tool and battery cartridge firmly during installation/removal. Failure to do so may cause them to slip, resulting in damage or injury.

CAUTION: Do not use the battery adapter with the circular saw. Its cable may hinder operation and cause injury.

To remove the battery cartridge, slide it from the tool while sliding the button on the front.

To install, align the tongue on the battery cartridge with the groove in the housing and slip it in until it locks with a click. If the red indicator on the button is visible, it is not fully locked.

CAUTION: Always install the battery cartridge fully until the red indicator cannot be seen. Otherwise, it may fall out, causing injury.

CAUTION: Do not install the battery cartridge forcibly. If it does not slide easily, it is not inserted correctly.

Tool / battery protection system

The tool has a protection system that automatically cuts off power to the motor to extend tool and battery life. The tool will stop automatically under conditions such as overload, overheat, or overdischarge.

Indicating the remaining battery capacity

Press the check button on the battery cartridge to display remaining capacity via indicator lamps for a few seconds.

Indicator lamps:

LightedOffBlinkingRemaining capacity
●●●●75% to 100%
●●●50% to 75%
●●○○25% to 50%
○○○0% to 25%
● (first lamp)Charge the battery. The battery may have malfunctioned.

NOTE: Indication may differ slightly from actual capacity depending on usage conditions and ambient temperature.

NOTE: The first (far left) indicator lamp blinks when the battery protection system works.

Operation

Automatic speed change function

The tool has "high speed mode" and "high torque mode". It automatically changes mode based on workload. Low workload uses high speed for quicker cutting; high workload uses high torque for powerful cutting.

Adjusting depth of cut

CAUTION: After adjusting depth, always tighten the lever securely.

Loosen the lever on the depth guide, move the base up or down, and secure by tightening the lever. For cleaner, safer cuts, set depth so no more than one blade tooth projects below the workpiece. This helps reduce potential for dangerous kickbacks.

Positive stopper

The positive stopper helps set designated angles quickly. Turn the stopper so the arrow points to your desired bevel angle (e.g., 22.5°, 45°, 53°). Loosen the lever, tilt the tool base until it stops at the set angle, and then tighten the lever.

Sighting

For straight cuts, align the 0° position on the front of the base with your cutting line. For 45° bevel cuts, align the 45° position.

Bevel cutting

CAUTION: After adjusting bevel angle, always tighten the lever securely.

Loosen the lever, set the desired angle by tilting, and then tighten the lever securely.

Assembly

CAUTION: Always ensure the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before carrying out any work on the tool.

Offset wrench storage

When not in use, store the offset wrench as shown in the figure to keep it from being lost.

Removing or installing circular saw blade

CAUTION: Ensure the circular saw blade is installed with teeth pointing up at the front of the tool.

CAUTION: Use only the Makita offset wrench to install or remove the circular saw blade.

To remove the blade, press the shaft lock fully to prevent rotation, use the offset wrench to loosen the hex bolt. Then remove the hex bolt, outer flange, circular saw blade, and ring (country specific).

Switch action

WARNING: Before installing the battery, check that the switch trigger actuates properly and returns to "OFF" when released.

WARNING: NEVER defeat the lock-off button. A negated lock-off button may result in unintentional operation and serious injury.

WARNING: NEVER use the tool if it runs when you pull the trigger without pressing the lock-off button. Return to a Makita service center for repair.

CAUTION: The tool brakes the blade rotation immediately after releasing the trigger. Hold the tool firmly to respond to the brake reaction. Sudden reaction can cause the tool to drop.

To start the tool, depress the lock-off button and pull the switch trigger. Release the switch trigger to stop.

NOTICE: Do not pull the switch trigger hard without pressing the lock-off button, as this can cause switch breakage.

Electric brake

The tool has an electric blade brake. If the blade does not stop quickly after releasing the switch, have the tool serviced.

CAUTION: The blade brake system is not a substitute for a blade guard. NEVER USE THE TOOL WITHOUT A FUNCTIONING BLADE GUARD. SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY CAN RESULT.

Electronic function

The tools are equipped with electronic functions for ease of operation, including a soft start feature for suppressed starting shock.

Blade Installation

Details on installing circular saw blades, including different inner flanges and rings, are provided with diagrams. Ensure correct alignment and secure tightening of the hex bolt.

WARNING: BE SURE TO TIGHTEN THE HEX BOLT COUNTERCLOCKWISE SECURELY. Be careful not to tighten forcibly; slipping can cause injury.

WARNING: Ensure the protrusion on the inner flange fits the saw blade hole perfectly. Mounting on the wrong side can result in dangerous vibration.

Follow removal procedure in reverse for installation. Align arrows on the circular saw blade with arrows on the tool.

Connecting a vacuum cleaner

For clean cutting, connect a Makita vacuum cleaner to the dust nozzle using the front cuff.

NOTE: Store the rubber cap on the front of the tool to prevent loss.

NOTE: When not using the vacuum cleaner, attach the rubber cap onto the dust nozzle.

Remove the rubber cap from the dust nozzle and connect the vacuum cleaner's hose.

Operation

This tool is intended to cut wood products only. Refer to the website or a local Makita dealer for correct saw blades for different materials.

Checking blade guard function

Set the bevel angle to 0°, retract the lower guard manually, and release it. The guard functions properly if it retracts above the base without hindrance and automatically returns to contact the stopper.

If the lower guard is not functioning properly, check for accumulated sawdust in the guards. If it still malfunctions, have the tool serviced.

Cutting Technique

CAUTION: Wear a dust mask when performing cutting operations.

CAUTION: Move the tool forward in a straight line gently. Forcing or twisting can cause overheating and dangerous kickback.

NOTE: When battery temperature is low, the tool may not work at full capacity. Use it for light-duty cuts until the battery warms up.

Hold the tool firmly with both hands (front grip and rear handle). Set the base on the workpiece without blade contact. Turn the tool on and wait for full blade speed. Move the tool forward smoothly over the workpiece, keeping it flat.

For clean cuts, keep the sawing line straight and advance uniformly. If the cut deviates, do not force the tool back to the line. Release the switch, wait for the blade to stop, withdraw the tool, realign on the new cut line, and start again. Avoid positioning that exposes the operator to chips and dust. Use eye protection.

Hook

The hook is convenient for temporary hanging. Lift to open, lower to close.

CAUTION: Always remove the battery when hanging the tool with the hook.

CAUTION: Never hook the tool at high locations or on unstable surfaces where it may fall.

CAUTION: Do not pull the tool downward when it is hooked.

CAUTION: Use hanging/mounting parts only for their intended purposes.

Rip fence (Guide rule)

Optional accessory: The rip fence allows for accurate straight cuts. Slide it snugly against the workpiece side and secure with the clamping screw. It enables repeated cuts of uniform width.

Lanyard (tether strap) connection

Safety warnings specific for use at height

Failure to follow warnings may result in serious injury.

Maintenance

CAUTION: Always ensure the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before inspection or maintenance.

CAUTION: Clean upper and lower guards to ensure no accumulated sawdust impedes the lower guarding system. Use compressed air. Ensure proper eye and breathing protection.

CAUTION: After each use, wipe off sawdust. Fine dust may enter the tool and cause malfunction or fire.

NOTICE: Never use gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol, or the like, as it may cause discoloration, deformation, or cracks.

For product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs and maintenance should be performed by Makita Authorized or Factory Service Centers using Makita replacement parts.

Adjusting 0°-cut accuracy

This is factory adjusted. If off, slightly loosen the lever on the bevel scale plate. Make the base perpendicular to the blade using a triangular rule or square rule by turning the adjusting screw. Tighten the lever and make a test cut.

Optional Accessories

CAUTION: These accessories are recommended for use with your Makita tool. Use of other accessories may present a risk of injury. Use accessories only for their stated purpose.

For assistance, ask your local Makita Service Center.

NOTE: Some items may be included as standard accessories and may differ by country.
