DigiTech Whammy Ricochet Owner's Manual

Thank you for choosing the DigiTech® Whammy™ Ricochet effect pedal.

Introduction

The Whammy Ricochet pedal offers the popular Whammy pitch-shifting effect in a compact form factor. Instead of using a treadle to control pitch-bending speed, the Whammy Ricochet bends the pitch of the incoming signal in time with the SHIFT and RETURN controls. Its true bypass design ensures your tone remains unaffected when the effect is bypassed.

The Whammy effect can be engaged or disengaged using the Footswitch, which can operate as either a momentary or latching switch. The TRAJECTORY LED ladder visually indicates the speed and direction of the pitch-shift. The pitch of the incoming signal can be shifted up or down by the following intervals:

  • 2nd
  • 4th
  • 5th
  • 7th
  • Octave
  • 2 Octaves
  • Octave + Dry

To use the Whammy Ricochet pedal, select the desired pitch-shift interval with the PITCH control, then select the pitch direction with the RANGE switch. Set the footswitch for momentary or latching operation with the MOMENTARY switch. To hear the speed of the pitch-shift effect's rise and fall, engage/disengage the effect with the footswitch; adjust the SHIFT and RETURN controls so the pitch effect bends to the selected interval and at the desired tempo.

Features

  • Pitch shifting up to 2 octaves up or down
  • Ballistics controls with Trajectory LED meter
  • Switchable Classic and Chords modes
  • Selectable momentary or latching footswitch operation
  • True Bypass
  • Compact design
  • Durable construction

User Interface

The Whammy Ricochet pedal is controlled via several knobs and switches:

Diagram Description: The pedal features a top-down view with labeled controls. Key elements include:

  • 1. Power Connector: Connects to the included power adapter. Requires a 9VDC external adapter (not included). Ensure the adapter provides at least 300mA.
  • 2. Ballistics Knobs (SHIFT & RETURN): These concentric knobs control the speed at which the pitch shifts (SHIFT) and the speed at which it returns to normal pitch (RETURN).
  • 3. Pitch Knob: Sets the pitch interval for the pitch shift. The direction (up or down) is determined by the RANGE switch.
  • 4. Input Jack: Connect your instrument here (1/4” unbalanced TS).
  • 5. Effect Footswitch: Engages or disengages the effect. Can be set to momentary or latching mode via the MOMENTARY switch.
  • 6. Output Jack: Connect to your amplifier or the next pedal in your chain (1/4” unbalanced TS).
  • 7. Range Switch: Selects whether the incoming signal is pitched up or down.
  • 8. Trajectory LED Ladder: These LEDs visually indicate the direction and speed of the pitch shift. They light up sequentially. If the effect is bypassed, the LEDs cycle in the direction selected by the RANGE switch every 2 seconds.
  • 9. Momentary Switch: Configures the footswitch operation. When set to 'ON', the Whammy effect is only active while the footswitch is held down. When set to 'OFF', the effect toggles between engaged and bypassed each time the footswitch is pressed.

Note: When the MOMENTARY switch is 'ON', the Whammy Ricochet uses a buffered bypass. When the MOMENTARY switch is 'OFF', it provides true bypass.

Classic & Chords Modes

The Whammy Ricochet offers two operating modes: Classic mode (emulating the original Whammy algorithm) and Chords mode (emulating the Whammy DT's modern algorithm). Classic mode is ideal for single-note solos, while Chords mode is for bending entire chords. The default mode is Chords. The mode can be changed while engaging or disengaging the effect.

To switch between Classic and Chords modes:

  1. Set the MOMENTARY switch to OFF.
  2. Press and hold the footswitch for at least 3 seconds. The default mode is Chords, indicated by the top 6 TRAJECTORY LEDs lighting up.
  3. While still holding the footswitch, move the RANGE switch down for Classic mode (a single TRAJECTORY LED lights up) or up for Chords mode (the top 6 TRAJECTORY LEDs light up). If you release the footswitch before changing modes, the effect will simply engage without changing modes.
  4. After selecting the mode, release the footswitch. The pedal will return to normal operation, and the effect will engage in the selected mode.

Note: The selected mode is retained even after disconnecting the pedal from power.

Connections / Application

Connecting the Whammy Ricochet Pedal to Your Rig:

  1. Mute your amplifier's main volume control.
  2. Make all audio connections to the Whammy Ricochet as follows.
  3. Connect the recommended PS0913DC power adapter (not included) to the POWER input jack, and plug the other end into a free AC outlet.
  4. Plug in your guitar and gradually increase your amplifier's main volume control until you reach your desired level.

Connection Diagram Description: The diagram illustrates the pedal's placement and connections. It shows the Whammy Ricochet as the first pedal in an effects chain. An instrument cable connects the guitar to the pedal's input. Another cable connects the pedal's output to an amplifier's input or the next pedal. An optional connection for 'OTHER PEDALS' is also shown. The diagram also highlights the PS0913DC power adapter and its connection to the pedal and a wall outlet. Text indicates to use unbalanced TS instrument cables only.

Note: The Whammy Ricochet should be the first pedal in your effects chain. Placing any effects before it may affect its pitch-shifting performance.
