Before You Install
Installation Tips!
⚠️ WARNING: SHOCK HAZARD
Incorrect installation may be dangerous or illegal. Multiple circuit breakers may need to be de-energized for safe installation. If you are unfamiliar with electrical work, please call a professional electrician.
Wire Identification:
- Neutral Wire: Typically white or grey. Allows the switch to be powered while the lighting circuit is off.
- Ground Wire: A bare copper wire providing a path to the earth.
- Line Wire (Live Wire): Carries electric current. A voltage tester will indicate if power is present.
- Load Wire: Connects the switch to the light fixture. Often attached to a brass terminal on the previous switch; sometimes black or red.
If the wires in your switch wall box differ from the descriptions below, consult a qualified electrician.
Identify Wires By Color:
Tip #1: Look at wire colors for identification.
- Neutral: White or Grey
- Ground: Bare Copper
- Load: Red or Black
- Line: White or Black
If Line and Load Are Both Black:
Tip #2: The Load wire usually comes from the top of the box; the Line wire generally comes from the bottom.
Tip #3: Before removing the switch, test each wire with a voltage tester.
⚠️ CAUTION: Risk of electric shock. Do NOT touch any wires during this process.
- After removing the face plate, briefly turn the breaker back on.
- Carefully press a non-contact voltage tester against each wire.
- The tester will indicate when a wire is hot (carrying current).
- The hot wire is the Line wire.
- The wire that does not show current is the Load wire.
⚠️ CAUTION: Risk of electric shock. Before continuing, ensure the power breaker is OFF.
