Welcome!

The Smart Building Reference Kit is designed to provide validation of network coverage within a building, accelerate solution development, and facilitate portable demonstrations to a wide range of stakeholders. By moving sensors to different spots, users can determine a gateway's range of coverage. Relying on readily-available hardware allows solution developers to focus on customer value through data collection and analysis using off-the-shelf components.

The kit's self-contained nature makes it easy to set up, take down, and move the network in minutes. All collected data is displayed on a dashboard accessible via a browser, showing the types of displays that can be created. The URL for the dashboard and login credentials are in the "Getting Started" section.

Note: The reference kit does not allow direct access to underlying data or changes to the LoRaWAN Network Server (LNS). For these requirements, contact Semtech at SBKSales@semtech.com.

An additional dashboard showing a permanent installation of a Smart Building Reference Solution Kit in an office facility is available for historical data demonstrations. Access it using the following credentials:

URL: lora-developers.semtech.com/smart-building-kit

Login: SemtechDemo1

Password: LoraWan592

Data in each dashboard is stored for a maximum of 30 days. This document explains how to set up and use the kit.

What is in the kit

The kit contains the following:

  • 5 Desk Sensors
  • 2 Grid-Eye Sensors
  • 2 Temperature/Humidity Sensors
  • 2 IR Blasters
  • 5 Door/Window Sensors
  • 5 Room Occupancy Sensors
  • 1 Leak sensor
  • 2 Mini-hub LoRaWAN gateways
  • 1 Wi-Fi to Mobile Portable Hotspot

Getting started

To begin, log in by scanning the QR code or, using Chrome, navigate to lora-developers.semtech.com/smart-building-kit.

Note: Individual login credentials can be found on the inside cover of the kit box or on the DEVEUI data sheet.

[Description of Figure 1: A QR code is displayed for scanning to log in.]

Get to know your Hotspot and Mini-hubs

The mini-hubs and hotspot are preconfigured to work together. The hotspot includes 1GB of free data service. For more data, sign up for a cellular service plan with GlocalMe. The hotspot supports up to two nano SIM cards; use a needle to access the SIM slots. Note: The hotspot does not support SIM cards that require PIN codes.

Setting-up the kit

  1. Fully charge the hotspot.
  2. Once charged, press and hold the hotspot's power button (#11) for five seconds to boot the device.

[Description of Figure 2: A diagram illustrating the hotspot's buttons and ports. Key elements include the screen displaying volume and Wi-Fi details, a 'Slide to unlock' prompt, and various buttons and ports labeled numerically.]

[Description of Figure 3: A screenshot of the hotspot's screen showing the login process, indicating 'Logging in...' and 'Connecting service'.]

  3. The hotspot will automatically log in and connect to the GlocalMe service.
  4. Once the hotspot displays the Wi-Fi name and Password (as shown in Figure 4), you can start setting up the mini-hubs.

[Description of Figure 4: A screenshot of the hotspot's screen displaying 'Remaining Volume: 1.10GB', 'Wi-Fi Name: GlocalMe_87070', and 'Password: 83839076', with a 'Slide to unlock' prompt.]

  5. Remove the cover plate on the first mini-hub. If necessary, attach the power adapter before plugging the mini-hub into a wall socket (as shown in Figure 5).

[Description of Figure 5: Images showing the mini-hub with its cover plate removed, the power adapter, and the mini-hub plugged into a wall socket.]

  6. The mini-hub is connected to the hotspot when the light on top turns green (as shown in Figure 6).

[Description of Figure 6: An image of a mini-hub plugged into a wall socket, with a green light indicating a successful connection to the hotspot.]

Setting-up the sensors

This kit monitors room or desk use, temperature, humidity, and leaks. Set up the sensors as follows:

  1. Grid Eye sensors are most effective when mounted on the ceiling or inside a lighting fixture, using the provided adhesive tape. They determine the number of people in a room and update approximately every 5 minutes after motion is detected.
  2. Window/Door sensors can be mounted on either side of the window or door frame (illustrated in Figure 7).

[Description of Figure 7: Diagrams showing placement options (Option A and Option B) for Window/Door sensors on both windows and doors.]

Note: The maximum allowable gap between a sensor and its corresponding magnet is 1 cm. Align the sensor side with the blue LED to the magnet face with the notch (illustrated in Figure 8). The sensor indicates whether the door or window is open or closed.

[Description of Figure 8: A diagram showing the alignment of the sensor and magnet, highlighting the blue LED and notch. An image of a mounted door/window sensor is also shown.]

  3. Desk Occupancy sensor may be mounted on the underside of a desk using the double-sided tape. For best results, mount horizontally approximately 25 cm from the front edge of the desk (as shown in Figure 9).

[Description of Figure 9: An image of a desk occupancy sensor mounted underneath a desk.]

Note: The sensor sends a message upon motion detection. No further messages are sent as long as motion is detected within 5-minute windows. An 'unoccupied' message is sent after 5 minutes of no motion. Changes may not be reflected immediately. Daily Desk Occupancy statistics are calculated for the preceding day at midnight.

  4. To detect movement in a room, place the Room Occupancy sensor on a flat surface like a table or bookshelf. It functions similarly to the Desk Occupancy sensor but has different parameters for space size. Room Occupancy statistics are calculated for the preceding 24-hour period at midnight each day.
  5. To detect temperature and humidity, place the Temp/Humidity sensor anywhere in the room. To mitigate momentary changes from opening doors or windows, place it away from them.
  6. The IR blaster controls wall-mounted HVAC systems, heaters, televisions, and other infrared-controlled devices using Pronto codes. A list of codes can be found at irdb.tk and www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/codes/. Place the IR blaster three to five feet from the device, facing its infrared receiver.

[Description of Figure 10: An image of the IR blaster device.]

Navigate to your kit's dashboard, click the "Environment" tab, and enter the Pronto code as shown in Figure 11.

[Description of Figure 11: A screenshot of the dashboard's 'Room Controls' section, showing a 'Delonghi IR Blaster' with a temperature display and an input field for 'Enter Custom Pronto Code'.]

  7. For information on removing or replacing batteries, scan the QR code or navigate to qrgo.page.link/iWxb.

Note: Batteries must be removed for shipping or air travel. Alternatively, plastic tabs can disrupt battery current.

Changing the Mini-Hub Wi-Fi connection

If you prefer not to use the provided hotspot Wi-Fi, you can configure the mini-hub to use another network by following these steps:

  1. Leave the mini-hub plugged in and turn off the hotspot.
  2. On a computer, perform a network scan and select the open Wi-Fi network that starts with "MiniHub-xxxxx", where "xxxxx" are the last 6 digits of the mini-hub's MAC address (as illustrated in Figure 12).

[Description of Figure 12: A screenshot of a computer's Wi-Fi network selection screen, showing various available networks, with a network named 'MiniHub-800073' highlighted.]

  3. Once connected to the mini-hub, open a web browser and type 192.168.4 in the address bar.
  4. Edit the WiFi SSID and WiFi Password to reflect the new WiFi network you want to connect to. Click "Apply" to save your changes.
