Taiko Audio Extreme DC Power Distributor Manual

The Concept

The Extreme DC Power Distributor is designed as a "power splitter" with advanced filtering capabilities. It allows multiple devices to be powered from a single power supply while minimizing "cross contamination" between them. In testing, the Extreme Switch and Extreme Router demonstrated significantly improved sound quality when powered by the Extreme DC Power Distributor and a single high-end linear power supply, compared to using two separate high-end power supplies. This distributor is engineered to pair perfectly with the Taiko Audio Extreme Switch and Extreme Router. It can also power any component requiring up to 25 Volts and a combined 10 Amps. The unit features 3 distinct filter outputs, enabling users to fine-tune the sound profile for a neutral balance, even with varying power supplies and mains conditions, or when component setups change.

Background

The development of the Extreme DC Power Distributor stems from research into noise issues associated with Wi-Fi access points. With extensive experience in DC power supply filtering, the focus shifted to specific noise aspects affecting sound quality, particularly noise generated by devices not optimized for audio. It was discovered that Wi-Fi noise degradation is not solely airborne but is significantly influenced by the power supply feeding the device, which in turn affects the mains supply and the entire audio system. Analyzing these noise spectra led to the design of filters targeting this specific noise. However, it was found that the power supply itself is a critical factor. Different power supply designs interact differently, leading to varied effects on sound quality. This even applies to Wi-Fi access points connected only to the mains, as their output side can introduce airborne noise. Testing revealed that the Extreme Switch and Router performed better when powered by a single supply rather than dual supplies, even if the second supply was a low-noise linear design. This is because a second power supply can introduce more interacted noise. Furthermore, connecting the Switch and Router with a DAC cable creates a direct/common ground, which can be unfavorably modulated by two different power supplies. A single shared ground is preferable from a noise perspective, especially considering the low current draw of these devices. While the Switch draws 100mA and the Router draws 500mA, the Router's higher processing load makes it inherently less noise-free. Isolating these devices while maintaining a common ground and reducing overall setup noise through a single power supply offers a significant benefit. Each filter in the distributor provides over 80dB of additional noise filtering. The 64 components within each filter have been meticulously selected by ear, including exotic and costly parts like Duelund capacitors, each contributing to a clearly audible improvement.

Connections

The Taiko Audio Extreme DC Power Distributor can be used with the Wall-Wart Power Supply included with the Extreme Switch or Extreme Router for excellent results. However, utilizing higher-end power supplies will further enhance sound quality.

The device features multiple output options, accessible via its physical connectors:

Connection Diagram

The connection diagram illustrates a typical setup for the Taiko Audio Extreme DC Power Distributor. It shows the distributor receiving input from an 'ISP or OWN Modem/router'. The distributor, featuring three DC output connectors, then powers the 'Extreme Router' and 'Extreme Switch' via separate connections (labeled as 'DAC Cable' in the diagram, likely referring to the type of cable used for audio-grade DC power). These Taiko Audio devices are then connected to a 'DAC' (Digital-to-Analog Converter) or other audio components. The diagram visually represents the flow of power and signal from the network source, through the distributor, to the audio system.

Installation

To ensure correct IP address allocation for the Router, Switch, and Extreme Music Server, it is recommended to follow this specific power-up order:

  1. Extreme Router
  2. Extreme Switch
  3. Extreme Music Server

Solving Connectivity Issues

In case of connectivity issues, please follow this routine:

  1. Power OFF the router and the switch by unplugging their DC cables. Turn OFF the Extreme Server using the button on the front. Leave the DC Distributor powered ON.
  2. Power ON the router first. Wait 2 minutes.
  3. Power ON the switch. Wait 1 minute.
  4. Power ON the Taiko Extreme.
  5. Connect to the Taiko Wi-Fi network.

Technically, Fetch IP in XDMS should function correctly at this point (from a device connected to the Taiko Wi-Fi network). If it does not, an IP scanner can be used to discover the Extreme Music Server's IP address.

Roon should also operate automatically from a device connected to the Taiko Wi-Fi. If it fails, try restarting the Roon app on your tablet or computer. Ensure you are connected to the Taiko Wi-Fi network.

Roon remotes should also function from the upstream network. The router is configured to allow Roon discovery from the "WAN" side, meaning your current home network acts as the "WAN". Therefore, Roon remotes should work when connected to your home Wi-Fi network, not exclusively to the "taiko audio" Wi-Fi.
