Gloucester Cathedral Services and Music - August 2025
Welcome
'The voice of prayer is never silent, nor dies the strain of praise away.'
For two millennia, Christians have been offering daily worship to God. Since its foundation as a monastery in the eleventh century, there has been a daily rhythm of prayer in Gloucester Cathedral, sustaining life and bringing particular needs and the needs of the whole world to God. These services are a small part of the eternal round of worship, which is never silent and will never die away.
Regular Worship
At the heart of our life is the regular cycle of daily prayer. Each day begins with the peaceful, said service of Morning Prayer. At 12:30 p.m., the Eucharist (often called Holy Communion) is offered, typically in the Thomas Chapel or the Lady Chapel. The day concludes with Choral Evensong, sung by one of the choirs, or said Evening Prayer. The principal act of worship is the 10:15 a.m. Choral Eucharist on Sundays.
The Choral Eucharist on Sundays is live-streamed on YouTube and Facebook. Cameras focus mainly on clergy, choir, and readers. Please alert a steward if you do not wish to appear on camera.
Other Services
Morning Prayer on Sundays is said at 8:30 a.m. The ancient office of Compline is said on Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m., both on Zoom. To join, email reception@gloucestercathedral.org.uk.

Music at Gloucester Cathedral
Music has been at the heart of Gloucester Cathedral's worship for almost 1,000 years, and today it holds an international reputation for offering the finest music to the glory of God and for the enrichment of worship. Music transforms and connects people through prayer and praise, promoting greater appreciation of its value by bringing people together for stimulating musical experiences.
The Cathedral has five choirs:
- The Boy and Girl Choristers: Separate choirs that join for large occasions. Choristers join from age six and receive an outstanding musical education, often with a Choral Scholarship. They sing most services, accompanied by Lay Clerks (professional adult singers).
- The Junior Choir: A voluntary choir of around 50 children (years two to five) meeting weekly for rehearsals. They perform in services and concerts, notably the monthly Family Eucharist.
- The St Benedict Singers: Formed in September 2019, this choir is an intermediate step for young people, developing their musicianship. They can join from school year 6 and are encouraged to progress to the Cathedral Youth Choir. They regularly join the Youth Choir for services and Evensongs, and combine with other choirs for major concerts. From January 2026, they will sing Evensong every Saturday.
- The Trinity Singers: Founded in 1999, this choir comprises talented young singers (School Years 10-13) from across Gloucestershire, performing to a very high standard. They sing Evensong every Thursday and for special occasions.
