Welcome
Thank you for purchasing a Canon product.
Precautions
General Precautions
- Do not look through the lens or camera at the sun or a strong light source. This may cause vision loss. Looking directly at the sun through the lens is especially dangerous.
- Do not leave the lens or camera with lens attached under direct sunlight with the lens cap removed. This is necessary to prevent the lens from concentrating and intensifying sunlight, which can cause scorching and fire.
Handling Precautions
When moving the lens from a cold environment to a warm one, moisture may condense on the lens surfaces and internal parts. To prevent condensation in such cases, place the lens in a sealed plastic bag first. Remove the lens from the bag after it has gradually warmed up.
Follow a similar procedure when moving the lens from a warm environment to a cold one.
Lens Attachment and Detachment
For more detailed information on attaching and detaching the lens, please refer to your camera's instruction manual.
- After detaching the lens, place it with the rear element facing up to prevent scratches on the lens surface or damage to the contacts.
- Dirty contacts, scratches, or fingerprints on the contacts can lead to corrosion or poor (erroneous) contact. This may cause camera and lens malfunctions.
- If contacts are dirty or have fingerprints, wipe them with a soft cloth.
- After removing the lens from the camera, attach the rear dust cap. To attach the dust cap, align the lens mount index with the index on the dust cap and turn it clockwise. To remove it, reverse the procedure.
Focus Mode Selection
For shooting in autofocus (AF) mode, set the focus mode selector to AF. For manual focus (MF) mode, set the selector to MF and adjust focus by turning the focus ring. The focus ring functions at all times, regardless of the set focus mode (Constant Manual Focus).
After performing autofocus in ONE SHOT AF mode, you can perform manual focusing by half-pressing the shutter button and turning the focus ring.
Infinity Distance Mark
To compensate for focus point shifts at infinity caused by temperature changes, note the following:
The infinity mark under normal temperature conditions is the point where the vertical line of the 'L' symbol aligns with the distance indicator on the distance scale. For precise manual focusing on subjects at infinity, turn the focus ring while looking through the viewfinder.
Infrared Index
The infrared index corrects focus settings when using infrared black-and-white film. Manually focus on the subject, then adjust the distance setting by moving the focus ring to the corresponding infrared index mark [Infrared Index Mark 7].
- Infrared film cannot be used with some EOS cameras. Refer to your EOS camera's instruction manual.
- The position of the infrared index is based on a wavelength of 800 nm.
- When using infrared film, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Also, use a red filter during shooting.

Filters
You can attach filters to the filter attachment thread on the front of the lens.
- Use a Canon polarizing filter.
Filter Holder (for EF14mm f/2.8L USM)
The lens has a gelatin filter holder at the rear. Trim the gelatin filter to the size of the white frame. Then insert the gelatin filter into the filter holder.
Lens Hoods
A lens hood prevents unwanted flare and light streaks on the lens elements, and also protects the lens from rain, snow, and dust.
EF50mm f/1.4 USM
Attach the hood to the hood attachment part, then turn it in the direction of the arrow to securely lock it onto the lens.
EF20mm f/2.8 USM, EF24mm f/1.4L USM, EF28mm f/1.8 USM, and EF35mm f/1.4L USM
To attach the hood, align the hood attachment position mark with the red dot on the front of the lens, then turn the hood in the direction of the arrow until the red dot on the lens aligns with the hood locking mark.
EF85mm f/1.8 USM, EF100mm f/2 USM
To attach the hood, press the buttons on both sides of the hood [Side Buttons] and twist.
EF200mm f/2.8L USM
Pull the hood out from the front of the lens until it stops [Hood Stop].
Other lenses (except EF14mm f/2.8L USM and EF200mm f/2.8L USM)
When storing the lens, the hood can be attached in reverse orientation.
- An improperly attached hood may obscure part of the image and cause vignetting.
- When attaching or removing the hood, hold the hood by its base when turning it. To prevent deformation, do not hold the hood by its edges when turning it.
Lens length is measured from the mount surface to the front of the lens. Add 21.5 mm to get the length including the lens cap and rear dust cover.
The dimensions and weight listed here are for the lens only, unless otherwise specified.
Diaphragm settings are indicated on the camera.
All data is based on measurements performed according to Canon standards.
Specifications and appearance are subject to change without prior notice.
A case and hood are not provided with some models.
Filters are sold separately.
