2. Overview

Following the worldwide success of the Radius 2 and 4 analogue rotary DJ mixers, MasterSounds and Union Audio continue their award-winning partnership with the launch of the Linear 4V and Radius 4V valve DJ mixers.

The Linear 4V & Radius 4V have been designed by Union Audio and MasterSounds and developed by Union Audio at their Cornwall-based workshops. Andy Rigby-Jones, former head of design for the world-renowned Allen & Heath Xone DJ mixer range, personally designed, built, and tested the analogue electronics, whilst MasterSounds founder Ryan Shaw worked on the mixer's feature set and sound.

Each mixer is lovingly hand-built, tested, and shipped directly from Union Audio, ensuring the ultimate in quality, reliability, and performance.

Andy says: "The Linear 4V & Radius 4V's signal path features pure high-end analogue topology for minimal distortion, low noise floor, and high headroom, aided by only using components of the highest quality. The addition of a fully discreet mix stage further adds to the sound quality of our unique creation."

With more than twenty years' experience of DJing, as well as a background in design and manufacturing, MasterSounds founder Ryan Shaw says: "The Linear 4V and Radius 4V are a fabulous addition to the MasterSounds range and are a response to customers who loved the Radius 2 and 4's design, but required a more traditional mixer layout, including 3 band EQ, LED meter on each channel, and a cross fader. The addition of a valve on each of the 4 input channels adds to the Linear 4V & Radius 4V's unique feature set and beautiful sound."

The Linear 4V and Radius 4V offer a fantastic clean, open, and dynamic sound on both LINE and RIAA inputs across all 4 channels, as well as great usability. The mixer features easy-reading backlit VU Meters, a responsive Master EQ/Isolator, 3 band EQ per channel, assignable cross fader, LED meter on each channel, and an Aux send system.

A unique feature is the ability to reconfigure the Aux Return Jacks as a Mix Buss Insert, giving the user unparalleled flexibility for FX integration, simply at the press of a button. This system marries perfectly with the MasterSounds FX unit.

And last but not least, the addition of two Mic inputs gives 4V the club standard specification seal of approval.

This is a premium product for true music lovers that comes in at a competitive price point for the dedication, quality, and love that goes, and will continue to go, into each hand-built unit.

Image Description: The front panel of the mixer features four channels, each with input selection (LINE/RIAA), TRIM, CUE, and a channel fader (rotary for Radius 4V, linear for Linear 4V). Other controls include MIC I/P SELECT, AUX send, PRE button, 3-band EQ (HIGH, MID, LOW), XFADE SWITCH, LED meters, VALVE SLOTS, MASTER EQ/ISOLATOR, MASTER, BOOTH, SPLIT, PHONES, X FADE CONTOUR, ADD MIX, and a CROSS FADER.

3. Front Panel Controls

Channel Controls (CH 1-4)

  • MIC I/P SELECT: Selects microphone input on CH1 & CH2 (located on rear panel).
  • TRIM: Adjusts input signal level from OFF to +10dBu for accurate level matching.
  • LINE/RIAA: Selects between RIAA (Phono) or LINE input level.
  • 3 BAND EQ: HIGH, MID, LOW equalization system providing -20dB cut and +6dB boost per band.
  • CUE: Routes the channel signal to the headphones, indicated by a red LED.
  • VALVE SLOT: Four slots on the front panel, each housing a valve with a red LED glow.
  • XFADE SWITCH: Assigns the cross fader to the desired channel (X or Y). 'OFF' bypasses the cross fader.
  • LED METER: 10-bar meter showing input signal level from -25dB to PK (Peak Signal). Normal operating range is -6dB to +6dB.
  • CH1-CH4 ROTARY FADER (Radius 4V): Controls channel level, from fully off (anti-clockwise) to unity gain (0dB, clockwise).
  • CH1-CH4 LINEAR FADER (Linear 4V): Controls channel level, from fully down (off) to unity gain (0dB).

Master and Monitoring Controls

  • VU METERS: Two analogue VU meters displaying left and right audio signals (post EQ). Meters illuminate RED over +6VU to warn against clipping. In SPLIT MODE, LEFT meter shows CUE level, RIGHT meter shows MIX level.
  • MASTER EQ/ISOLATOR: Functions as an isolator with 12dB/octave filters at 350Hz and 3.5kHz, also usable as a Master EQ.
  • MASTER: Adjusts signal level to the Main Output XLRs (House Mix) from off to +10dBu gain.
  • BOOTH: Adjusts signal level to the Booth Output TRS Jacks (Monitor Mix) from off to +10dBu gain.
  • SPLIT: When activated, links CUE buttons and VU Meters. The Left VU Meter shows CUE signal, Right VU Meter shows MIX signal. Sends cued source to Left headphone and mix to Right headphone.
  • PHONES: Controls headphone output level. A 1/4 inch jack headphone input is located on the front.
  • X FADE CONTOUR: Adjusts the cross fader slope for various mixing styles, from mild blending to sharp cuts.
  • ADD MIX: Controls the amount of stereo house mix sent to the cued track in headphones.
  • CROSS FADER: High-quality Penny & Giles cross fader for mixing between signals assigned to X or Y.

4. Rear Panel Controls

  • MASTER OUT: XLR output for balanced equipment (monitors, amplifiers). Output level is +14dBu at full gain.
  • AUX SEND & RETURN/INSERT: 1/4 inch TRS jack sockets for connecting external FX units. SEND connects to FX input, RETURN connects to FX output.
  • INSERT ON BUTTON: Reconfigures Aux Return Jacks as a Mix Buss Insert for FX integration.
  • GROUND POST: For connecting turntable ground leads.
  • RECORD OUT: Twin RCA sockets for stereo recording. Output level is -6dBu, unaffected by Master Output volume.
  • BOOTH OUT: 1/4 inch TRS jack output for the DJ's booth monitor system.
  • POWER SWITCH: "0" for OFF. Press the "-" [power-symbol] to power ON with the external power supply connected.
  • POWER INPUT SOCKET: Connects the external 18-19V power supply.
  • CH ONE-CH FOUR: Four sets of LINE and PHONO RCA inputs. PHONO inputs provide gain and RIAA equalization for turntables. LINE inputs are for CD players.
  • MIC 1 MIC 2 INPUTS: Two female XLR sockets for connecting two microphones.
  • MIC ON: Buttons to enable microphone inputs on CH1 & CH2.

Using the External Send & Return System

Connect Mixer Aux Send outputs to FX unit inputs and FX unit outputs to mixer Aux Returns. Set FX unit to unity gain. Adjusting the channel send control feeds the channel signal to the FX unit for effects like echo, delay, or reverb. The PRE button allows the AUX send to take signal before the channel fader, enabling effects to be introduced even when the fader is down.

MIX INSERT

The Aux Return Jack Sockets can be reconfigured as a Mix Buss Insert point by pressing the INSERT ON BUTTON. This allows the entire mix to be processed through external devices like compressors or equalisers. The 1/4 inch TRS Jacks function as a conventional mixer insert, with the Tip as SEND and the Ring as RETURN.
