Introduction

K1 large format WST line source

The K1 enclosure is a full-range element of a large format WST® line source with variable curvature. It features two 15" speakers in a bass-reflex enclosure, four 6.5" high-efficiency direct radiating speakers, and three 3" diaphragm compression drivers coupled to individual DOSC® waveguides. The transducers are implemented in a K-shape configuration. The K1 enclosure is based on a 3-way active design with 2 LF sections, 1 MF section, and 1 HF section, each at a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. It is constructed from first-grade Baltic birch plywood for maximum acoustical and mechanical integrity, with an integrated four-point rigging system.

The K1 enclosure operates over the nominal frequency range of 35 Hz to 20 kHz. The frequency response can be extended down to 30 Hz with the K1-SB extension or 25 Hz with the KS28 subwoofer. The K1 generates a symmetric horizontal coverage of 90°.

The rigging system allows vertically assembling K1 enclosures with various inter-element angles up to 5°, forming a line array with variable curvature. The coplanar symmetry and DOSC® waveguide in the HF region ensure perfect acoustic coupling between array elements. The WST® (Wavefront Sculpture Technology) criteria are fulfilled, qualifying the array as a true line source, providing smooth tonal response and lobe-free coverage.

The K1 system is driven by LA12X amplified controllers, ensuring active system linearization, intelligent transducer protection, and optimization. Acoustic performance depends on the used preset and physical configuration.

Rigging system description

The K1/K1-SB rigging system integrates two arms on each side for connecting to other elements or flying frames. A front sliding arm allows inter-element angle setting (nine positions: 0° to 5°), and a rear rotating arm enables rear connection. Rigging arms are secured with three ball-locking pins per side. An automatic system with buttons and latches secures adjacent enclosures or rigging accessories, featuring yellow safety labels visible when not safely locked.

Two ergonomic handles are present on each side of K1 for handling. K1/K1-SB features two ground runners for enclosure protection, with tracks on the top fitting these runners in stacking deployment.

Rigging elements

  • K1-BUMP: A rigging frame for flying K1/K1-SB arrays. It has a central rigging bar with four Ø 22 mm shackles for security slings, K1-BPCHAIN, and K1-DELTA. It also features a support plate for a laser inclinometer. An identification sticker denotes front/rear. A rack stabilizer accommodates LA-RAK II AVB touring racks. The central bar has holes for site angle adjustments (front or rear overhang).
  • K1-BPCHAIN: An adjustable extension chain compatible with K1-BUMP or K2-BUMP, with a WLL of 3.15 t, necessary for climbing-hoist setup to prevent chain bags from obstructing enclosures.
  • K1-DELTA: Designed for azimuth angle setting. Combined with K1-BUMP, it controls azimuth angle while K1-BUMP controls site angle. Recommended spacing between lifting points is 1 m / 3.3 ft. Azimuth angle can be adjusted from -10° to +10° by adjusting pickup point heights.
  • K1-LASERMOUNT: A support plate for mounting a laser inclinometer to the side of a K1 or K1-SB enclosure, installed at the rear, on the right side.
  • KARA-DOWNK1: A rigging interface for Kara II under a K1 array. Four tabs on top are compatible with the K1 rigging system, and four slits with ball-locking pins accommodate Kara II rigging arms.
  • K2-LINK: An interface between K1 and K2 rigging systems, used to hang K2 under K1, K1-SB, or K1-BUMP. Three holes at the top provide angle settings (0.25°, 2.5°, 5°) between the top K2 and bottom K1 element. The 0.25° hole aligns K2 and K1 element front faces.

Transportation

  • K-BUMPFLIGHT: A modular flight case for transporting K1 system accessories. It allows lifting K1-BUMP directly from the case. It can transport up to two K1-BUMP and accessories. With additional compartments, it can hold up to four K1-BUMP.
  • K1-CHARIOT: A chariot for transporting and storing blocks of up to four K1 or K1-SB enclosures. It features four rigging arms to secure the lower enclosures. Mechanical safety

The K1 rigging system complies with the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive and BGV-C1 guidelines, achieving a safety factor of 4 or more for flown deployments described in this manual. Refer to Soundvision for the safety factor of specific deployments.

Safe Limit vs. Maximum Limit: The safe limit indicates the maximum number of elements for a compliant safety factor under defined use, regardless of deployment parameters. The maximum limit indicates the maximum number for potential compliance under optimal mechanical conditions. For mixed arrays, consult Soundvision.

K1 Configuration Limits:

  • Flown K1 array with K1-BUMP: Safe limit 16, Maximum limit 24.
  • Flown K1 array with K1-BUMP and Kara II downfill: 14 K1 + 3 LA-RAK II AVB (Safe limit), 23 K1 + 4 LA-RAK II AVB (Maximum limit).
  • Flown K1-SB array with K1-BUMP: Safe limit 20, Maximum limit 24.
  • Flown K1-SB array with K1-BUMP and LA-RAK II AVB: 18 K1-SB + 3 LA-RAK II AVB (Safe limit), 24 K1-SB + 4 LA-RAK II AVB (Maximum limit).
  • Flown KS28 array with KS28-BUMP: Maximum/Safe limit 16.

Other Configurations:

  • Stacked K1 with K1-CHARIOT: Safe limit 4, Maximum limit 4.
  • Stacked KS28 (upright): Safe limit 4, Maximum limit 4.
  • Stacked KS28 (on chariot): Safe limit 2, Maximum limit 2.

Assessing Mechanical Safety:

  • WLL is not enough: Rated WLL indicates resistance to tensile stress but is insufficient for complex systems like loudspeaker arrays.
  • Mechanical modeling with Soundvision: Working load and safety factor depend on array composition and implementation. Soundvision provides complex mechanical modeling and calculation.
  • Assessing safety with Soundvision: The overall safety factor is the lowest among all linking points. Always model with Soundvision and check the Mechanical Data section. A stress warning appears when safety levels are exceeded.
  • Safety of ground-stacked arrays: Soundvision includes a stability warning for ground-stacked arrays indicating tipping hazards if not secured. It is the user's responsibility to secure the array.
  • Additional safety for flown arrays: Use available holes to implement secondary safety.
  • Unusual conditions: Soundvision calculations are based on usual conditions. Higher safety factors are recommended for extreme temperatures, strong wind, or prolonged salt water exposure. Consult a rigging specialist.

Loudspeaker configurations

Line source

The system operates as a line source over the K1 enclosure's nominal bandwidth. Two configurations are possible:

  • K1 line source: Uses only K1 enclosures. Preset: [K1]. Frequency range (-10 dB): 35 Hz - 20 kHz.
  • K1/K1-SB line source: Enhanced LF throw by using K1-SB as an LF line source element. Preset for K1: [K1]. Preset for K1-SB: [K1SB_X]. Recommended ratio: 2 K1 : 1 K1-SB. Minimum line length: 8 K1 + 4 K1-SB. When using [K1] with [K1SB_X], do not add delay between elements.

K1-SB applications

K1-SB has two applications in a K1 system:

  • LF extension in a line source: For enhanced throw, using the [K1SB_X] preset with K1.
  • Subwoofer: For increased impact, using the [K1SB_60] preset.

Both applications can be combined. Diagrams illustrate K1-SB as an LF extension and as a subwoofer.

Additional subwoofer system

A K1 or K1/K1-SB line source can be deployed with additional subwoofers for increased sub-low resources. Two systems are available: K1-SB for impact, and KS28 for infra extension. The recommended ratio is one K1 for one subwoofer. Presets [K1SB_60] and [KS28_60] provide an upper frequency limit at 60 Hz for optimal coupling.

  • K1-SB: Extends bandwidth to 30 Hz. Deployments include K1-SB beside the line source (side LF rejection) or behind it (rear LF rejection/cardioid). Diagrams show these configurations. Pre-alignment delays are provided for [K1] + [K1SB_60] configurations.
  • KS28: Extends bandwidth to 25 Hz. Diagrams show KS28 line source configurations. Pre-alignment delays are provided for [K1] + [KS28_60] and [K1] + [K1SB_X] + [KS28_60] configurations. Cardioid configurations using [xxxx_xx_C] or [xxxx_xx_Cx] presets are mentioned.

Additional downfill element

K1 systems can be combined with Kara II or K2 line source downfill systems for extended vertical coverage to closer audience areas.

  • Kara II: Presets [KARAIIDOWNK1], [KARAIIDOWNK1 70], [KARAIIDOWNK1 90] include a high-pass filter at 55 Hz and specific delay settings for optimal coupling. The Kara II enclosure is driven by LA4X / LA12X. The [KARAIIDOWNK1] preset is optimized for 110° fin settings. Diagrams show line source with Kara II downfill. No delay should be added between K1 and Kara II elements.
  • K2: The [K2 110] preset provides K2 with the same horizontal coverage as K1 for optimal downfill. The K2 enclosure is driven by LA4X / LA12X. Diagrams show line source with K2 downfill. No delay should be added between K1 and K2 elements.

Inspection and preventive maintenance

How to do preventive maintenance

Inspect the system before any deployment and after any corrective maintenance. Perform preventive maintenance at least once a year. This includes inspecting rigging and hardware (Rigging part inspection, p.42; Rigging check, p.52) and acoustical checks (Enclosure check, p.58; Listening test, p.60). If parts are damaged, contact your L-Acoustics representative. For speaker repair, refer to the Corrective maintenance section (p.106).

Rigging part inspection

Inspect critical rigging parts, including lifting accessories, rigging accessories, fasteners, integrated rigging elements, and transportation accessories. Perform inspections in a well-lit environment. Check for presence, disassemble if necessary (checking tethers), inspect from all sides for corrosion, wear, cracks, bends, dents, holes, missing labels, or loose fasteners. Check part geometry on a flat surface and inspect moving parts for correct engagement. If a screw is loose, replace it or use blue threadlocker. If a problem is detected, perform authorized maintenance or contact your L-Acoustics representative.

Recommendation for speaker cables

Cable quality and resistance: Use only high-quality, fully insulated loudspeaker cables made of stranded copper wire with low resistance per unit length. Keep cables as short as possible for optimal performance. L-Acoustics recommends using cables of similar type, length, and gauge for symmetrical deployments.

The table below provides recommended maximum cable lengths for uncompromised performance:

Cable Gaugemm²SWGAWGRecommended Maximum Length
8 Ω load4 Ω load
mftmft
2.515131411301001550
41111501602580
