Danfoss Electric Expansion Valves Type ETS 5M (Version 2)

For liquid injection into evaporators

Product Overview

The ETS 5M is a compact and lightweight stepper motor-driven electric expansion valve offering high reliability and precise control for refrigeration and air conditioning systems. It is available in a wide capacity range and is designed for use with various refrigerants.

Applications include VRF systems, close controls, heat pumps, mini chillers, bus/transport refrigeration, rooftops, cold rooms, and food service applications, supporting single and biflow operations.

The valve operates using a uni-polar/bi-polar motor, making it compatible with various electronic controllers from Danfoss and third-party vendors. When used with an EKE 100 series superheat controller and an AKS sensor, it can achieve superheat accuracy better than ± 0.5 K.

Features

System Product

The ETS 5M functions are controlled by a Danfoss electronic controller or a compatible third-party controller. Danfoss recommends the EKE 100 series superheat controller or EKE 110 for injection control to achieve superheat accuracy better than 0.5 K. The controller requires precise temperature and pressure inputs from sensors and transmitters.

EKE 100 Superheat Controllers: These controllers are designed for DIN rail mounting and are available in three versions with different combinations of inputs, output relays, and functionalities.

Applications

The ETS 5M is suitable for various applications, including:

Note: ETS 5M 10-24 can be used in oil-free systems but with a limited MOPD of 27 bar.

Media Data

The ETS 5M is designed for use with various refrigerants and suitable lubricants. Refer to Table 2 for specific media data.

Table 2: ETS 5M Media Data

Note on Flammable Refrigerants: For flammable refrigerants (e.g., R454C, R454A, R1234ze, R290, R32, R452B, R454B, R455A, R1234yf), the product is validated according to ATEX, EN 378, ISO 5149, ASHRAE 15, and IEC 60335-2-x standards. Ignition risk is evaluated according to ISO 5149 and IEC 60335. It is recommended to obtain third-party approval for systems containing flammable refrigerants, and to follow specific selection criteria.

The valve must be used in closed circuit refrigeration systems without oxygen, compliant with relevant standards.

Product Specification

Design

The ETS 5M electric expansion valve regulates refrigerant flow using a screw mechanism driven by a stepper motor. Electrical signals applied to the coil cause a magnet needle valve assembly to move linearly. The valve mechanism moves in steps based on the applied signals, allowing precise setting of the opening degree.

Flow Characteristics

Air flow characteristics for ETS 5M in normal and reverse flows are provided in graphical format (Figures 3 and 4). These characteristics are measured at 1 barg differential pressure, with air flow in m³/hour on the Y-axis and valve position (in half steps) on the X-axis.

Mechanical Configuration Options

The ETS 5M is an angleway valve available with steel bodies and ODM or ODF solder connections in stainless steel with copper plating. Inlet and outlet sizes are 1/4 in, 5/16 in, or 1/2 in. Connection configurations can be shaped in L, H, and U forms.

Figure 5: ETS SM Inlet and Outlet Configuration

Table 5: Connection Configuration (Shape L) shows available combinations of sizes and configurations.

Electrical Connection

The electrical connection is via a fixed cable, with lengths up to 4 meters, using JST XHP-5, JST XHP-6, or SUPU connectors. Refer to ETS 5M coil ordering details.

Electrical and Motor Specifications

The valve is operated by a uni-polar/bi-polar motor via a separate coil.

Dimensions

Dimensional drawings for ETS 5M 10-24 (1/4 inch male, 5/16 inch male) and ETS 5M 25-40 (5/16 inch male, 1/2 inch male) are provided in Tables 10, 11, 12, and 13, along with Figure 6 for ETS 5M coil dimensions.

Ordering

The ETS 5M is highly configurable and can be delivered with various mechanical connections, including shape types L, H, and U.

Parts Program

The ETS 5M consists of a valve body and a separate Uni-polar/bi-polar motor coil, which are purchased separately. The valve body is hermetic and cannot be disassembled.

Table 15: ETS 5M Valve Body Ordering Data lists various ETS 5M valve body models with their specifications, including orifice size, connection type, rated capacity for R410A (in kW and TR), pack format, quantity per pack, and code number.

Table 16: Coils for ETS 5M provides details on available ETS 5M coils, including type, cable length (in meters and inches), electrical connector, pack format, quantity per pack, and code number. Options include Uni-polar JST XHP-5, Uni-polar JST XHP-6, and Bi-polar SUPU MC connectors, with various cable lengths and pack formats.

Note on Rated Capacity: The rated capacity is based on specific operating conditions: Refrigerant R410A, Evaporating temperature Te = 5 °C, Condensing temperature Tc = 38 °C, Refrigerant temperature ahead of valve Tliquid = 34 °C, Subcooling = 4k, Superheat = OK, Driving steps = 480 steps.
