Danfoss Electric Expansion Valves Type ETS 5M (Version 2)
For liquid injection into evaporators
Product Overview
The ETS 5M is a compact and lightweight stepper motor-driven electric expansion valve offering high reliability and precise control for refrigeration and air conditioning systems. It is available in a wide capacity range and is designed for use with various refrigerants.
Applications include VRF systems, close controls, heat pumps, mini chillers, bus/transport refrigeration, rooftops, cold rooms, and food service applications, supporting single and biflow operations.
The valve operates using a uni-polar/bi-polar motor, making it compatible with various electronic controllers from Danfoss and third-party vendors. When used with an EKE 100 series superheat controller and an AKS sensor, it can achieve superheat accuracy better than ± 0.5 K.
Features
- Optimized valve flow characteristic.
- Accurate valve control, even at low opening degrees.
- Bi-flow capability with full performance in both flow directions.
- High degree of freedom for installation orientation.
- Future-proof design for evolving refrigerant requirements.
- Compatible with existing valve drivers.
- Largest nominal capacity for R410A: 41.0 kW, 11.6 TR.
System Product
The ETS 5M functions are controlled by a Danfoss electronic controller or a compatible third-party controller. Danfoss recommends the EKE 100 series superheat controller or EKE 110 for injection control to achieve superheat accuracy better than 0.5 K. The controller requires precise temperature and pressure inputs from sensors and transmitters.
EKE 100 Superheat Controllers: These controllers are designed for DIN rail mounting and are available in three versions with different combinations of inputs, output relays, and functionalities.
Table 1: Sensors and other products for ETS 5M
- Pressure transmitter (DST P110): A digital ratiometric pressure transmitter. Other ratiometric pressure transmitters like AKS 32R can also be used depending on the controller type.
- EKF 1A/2A Stepper Valve Driver: An economical stepper valve driver that translates analog signals from the master controller into valve driving sequences.
- EKE 2U Backup power module: Provides sufficient power to the controller in case of power failures, ensuring the electronic valves close properly.
Applications
The ETS 5M is suitable for various applications, including:
- VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) systems
- Close controls
- Heat pumps
- Mini Chillers
- Bus and Transport refrigeration
- Rooftop units
- Cold rooms
- Food service applications
Note: ETS 5M 10-24 can be used in oil-free systems but with a limited MOPD of 27 bar.

Ignition risk is evaluated according to ISO 5149 and IEC 60335. It is recommended to obtain third-party approval for systems containing flammable refrigerants, and to follow specific selection criteria.
The valve must be used in closed circuit refrigeration systems without oxygen, compliant with relevant standards.
Product Specification
Design
The ETS 5M electric expansion valve regulates refrigerant flow using a screw mechanism driven by a stepper motor. Electrical signals applied to the coil cause a magnet needle valve assembly to move linearly. The valve mechanism moves in steps based on the applied signals, allowing precise setting of the opening degree.
