Pulsed Laser Emission: Power and Energy Calculations
Thorlabs provides resources for calculating pulsed laser parameters such as peak pulse power, average power, and pulse energy. These calculations are useful for ensuring compatibility with devices, measuring laser emission without damage, and exciting specific material effects.
- Equations provided for:
- Period and repetition rate
- Pulse energy from average power
- Average power from pulse energy
- Peak pulse power from pulse energy
- Peak power and average power from each other
- Peak power from average power and duty cycle
Example Calculation: Demonstrates how to determine if a detector is safe for measuring a specific pulsed laser emission based on its peak power.
Recalibration Services
Thorlabs offers traceable recalibration services for their power and energy meter electronics and sensors. These services include:
- Manufacturer Calibrations: Performed in-house, subject to ISO9001 requirements. Includes recalibration of a single-channel console or interface at no additional cost with sensor recalibration.

Sensor Selection
Thorlabs offers four types of sensors:
- Photodiode Sensors: For monochromatic or near-monochromatic sources, providing current proportional to input optical power and wavelength.
- Thermal Sensors: For broadband sources, delivering voltage proportional to input optical power.
- Thermal Position & Power Sensors: Incorporate four thermopiles to measure beam position and power.
- Pyroelectric Energy Sensors: For pulsed sources, producing voltage peaks proportional to incident pulse energy.
Selection guides are available based on wavelength (Figure 113G) and optical power range (Figure 113H) to help identify suitable sensor heads.
