MoFi SourcePoint 10 Loudspeaker

Brand: MoFi Electronics

Introduction

Thank you for your purchase of the SourcePoint 10.

Andrew Jones, Chief Loudspeaker Designer at MoFi Electronics, introduces the SourcePoint 10. He explains his goal was to blend long-standing technologies with new concepts for improved performance. He highlights that while his career has focused on concentric drivers, often in three-way designs, the SourcePoint 10 is his first pure two-way concentric design in over 20 years.

The design required a newly developed 10-inch driver for wide frequency response, linearity, and low distortion. Every component, from the twin-drive neodymium magnet structure to the paper pulp mixture, was selected over a two-year development period. Jones expresses pride in the speaker's performance.

Users are encouraged to follow the setup guidelines in the manual and experiment to optimize their listening experience, hoping they enjoy listening as much as he enjoyed designing it.

Installation Guidelines

Unboxing Your Speaker

To open the double-boxed package: carefully open the outer carton top flaps and fold them outward. Next, open the inner carton flaps and fold them outward. Flip the box upside-down and slowly lift the carton to reveal the speaker. One piece of packing foam may remain inside. The speaker will be upside-down and contained within a white protective bag.

Carefully lift the speaker from the remaining packing foam and remove it from the bag. Place the speaker on a smooth, clean surface.

Attaching the Grilles

The grilles attach magnetically to the speakers. To affix, hold a grille by its edges and position it next to the front baffle. It will automatically pull itself to the baffle and self-locate. To remove, hold the edges and pull it away from the baffle.

Connecting Your Speakers

Power off all audio equipment before connecting the speakers.

Use speaker wire (minimum 16-gauge) appropriate for your system's power level and quality.

Ensure correct wire polarity. Most speaker cables are coded for identification. Connect the positive (red) terminal of the cable to the positive (red) terminal on the amplifier/receiver and the speaker. Repeat for the negative (black) side.

For bare wire connections: strip approximately 3/4 inch of insulation from the cable ends. Twist the bare strands clockwise, insert into the binding post, and tighten. Ensure no stray strands bridge the gap between terminals.

If using banana plugs, ensure terminals are tight and nothing is loose to vibrate.

Speaker Placement

While there is no single "golden rule" for speaker placement, general guidelines can optimize performance. Experimenting with placement is an effective way to maximize sound quality.

Start by placing speakers approximately one to three feet away from boundaries like walls and corners. Close proximity to a side or rear wall can enhance bass responsiveness, but positioning too near a boundary may result in excessive bass.

Experimentation is key. Move speakers while listening to music and evaluate controlled, balanced bass across all frequencies. Focus on the bass relative to mid-bass and low midrange. Listen to male and female vocals to determine if voices sound natural and not "chesty."

Diagram Description:

The diagram illustrates optimal speaker placement relative to walls and floor. Speakers should be positioned approximately 2 to 4 feet away from side and rear walls. The diagram also indicates a distance of 33 inches from the floor, suggesting placement height or distance from the floor boundary.

Optimizing Stereo Imaging

Stereo imaging is often overlooked. Correct spacing and arrangement with an optimal toe-in angle can create a large, involving soundstage with focused imaging.

Begin by arranging speakers to form an equilateral triangle with the listener. Rotate each speaker to point towards the listener. For these concentric-driver speakers, rotating them so their axes point slightly in front of or behind the listener may yield the best results. Listen to music to assess the size and scale of the sound field and the focus of center voices.

Experiment by moving speakers further apart or closer together. Be aware that moving speakers further apart may bring them closer to side walls. You can compensate for potential sound changes by increasing the toe-in angle. Ultimately, choose the setup that sounds best to you; there is no single correct or incorrect method.
