Chapter 1: Setting Up Your Computer
Steps
- Connect the power adapter and press the power button.
- Complete the Windows system setup. Follow the on-screen instructions. During setup, Dell recommends:
- Connecting to a network for Windows updates.
- Signing in or creating a Microsoft account. If not connected to the internet, create an offline account.
- Entering your contact details on the Support and Protection screen.
- Find and use Dell applications from the Windows Start menu.

4. Create a recovery drive for Windows. It is recommended to create a recovery drive to troubleshoot and fix problems that may occur with Windows.
Chapter 2: Creating a USB Recovery Drive for Windows
Create a recovery drive to troubleshoot and fix problems that may occur with Windows. A blank USB flash drive with a minimum capacity of 16 GB is required to create a recovery drive.
Prerequisites
Note: This process may take up to an hour to complete.
Note: The following steps may vary depending on the version of Windows installed. Refer to the Microsoft Support website for the latest instructions.
Steps
- Connect a USB flash drive to your computer.
- In Windows Search, type Recovery.
- In the search results, click Create a recovery drive. The User Account Control window is displayed.
- Click Yes to continue. The Recovery Drive window is displayed.
- Select Back up system files to the recovery drive and click Next.
- Select the USB flash drive and click Next. A message is displayed indicating that all data on the USB flash drive will be erased.
- Click Create.
- Click Finish.

Chapter 5: Software
Downloading drivers
This chapter provides detailed instructions on the operating system and how to install drivers.
Steps
- Turn on the notebook.
- Visit Dell.com/support.
- Click Product support, enter your notebook's Service Tag, and then click Submit.
- Note: If you do not have a Service Tag, use the automatic detection feature or manually browse to find your notebook model.
- Click Drivers and Downloads.
- Select the operating system installed on your notebook.
- Scroll down the page and select the driver to install.
- Click Download File to download the driver for your notebook.
- After the download is complete, navigate to the folder where you saved the driver file.
- Double-click the driver file icon and follow the on-screen instructions.
Chapter 6: System setup (System Configuration)
Caution: Unless you are an experienced computer user, do not change the settings in the BIOS Setup program. Certain changes can cause your computer to operate incorrectly.
Note: Before changing the BIOS Setup program, it is recommended that you record the BIOS Setup screen information for future reference.
Use the BIOS Setup program for the following purposes:
- Obtain information about the hardware installed on your computer, such as the amount of RAM and hard drive size.
- Change system configuration information.

Boot sequence
The Boot Sequence allows you to bypass the boot sequence defined by System Setup and boot directly to a specific device (for example, an optical drive or hard disk). During the Power-on Self Test (POST), when the Dell logo appears, you can:
- Access System Setup by pressing the F2 key.
- Access the one-time boot menu by pressing the F12 key.
The one-time boot menu displays devices that you can boot from, including diagnostic options. The boot menu options are:
- Removable Devices (if available)
- STXXXX Drive (Note: XXXX indicates the SATA drive number)
- Optical Drive (if available)
- SATA Hard Drive (if available)
- Diagnostics
Note: Selecting Diagnostics displays the ePSA diagnostics screen.
The boot sequence screen also displays options for accessing the System Setup screen.
System setup options
Note: Depending on your laptop and installed devices, the items listed in this section may or may not appear.
