Sharp PN-V601 LCD Monitor Operation Guide

This document provides detailed instructions for operating, setting up, and troubleshooting the Sharp PN-V601 LCD monitor. For installation and connection instructions, please refer to the accompanying "User Manual".

Note: For information on installing/removing optional parts, consult your Sharp dealer. Do not open the expansion slot cover as it contains high-voltage components.

Basic Operation

This section covers the fundamental operations of the monitor.

Using the Remote Control

When operating multiple displays, set the remote control to the appropriate mode (see page 7).

1. POWER Button: Turns the monitor on or off.

2. MUTE Button: Temporarily turns off the sound. Press again to restore audio.

3. MENU Button: Displays and closes the menu screen (see page 8).

4. VOL +/- Buttons: Adjusts the volume. The volume menu appears when pressed.

5. BRIGHT +/- Buttons: Adjusts the brightness. The brightness menu appears when pressed.

6. SIZE Button: Selects the screen size (see page 6).

7. DISPLAY Button: Shows monitor information. Pressing again cycles through information screens.

8. MODE Button: Selects the color mode (e.g., STD, VIVID, sRGB).

Input Selection: Use the INPUT button to cycle through input sources (e.g., PC D-SUB, PC HDMI, AV HDMI). Press the button to confirm the selection.

Input Signal and Audio Selection: For PC inputs (D-SUB, RGB), you can select input signal resolutions and adjust settings like CLOCK, PHASE, H-POS, V-POS, H-SIZE, V-SIZE, H-RESOLUTION, V-RESOLUTION. For AV inputs, you can select color systems (NTSC, PAL, SECAM) and scan modes.

Note: Some settings may vary depending on the input signal or if the optional PN-ZB02 unit is installed.

Switching Screen Size

The monitor allows adjustment of the screen aspect ratio to match the input signal:

  • WIDE: Full screen display for PC input. For AV input, the 4:3 image is stretched to fill the screen.
  • ZOOM1: For PC input, the 4:3 image is stretched to fill the screen while maintaining the original aspect ratio, cropping the edges. For AV input, it's similar to PC input.
  • ZOOM2: If edges are cropped in ZOOM1, this mode displays the image with the cropped edges visible.
  • NORMAL: Displays the image according to the input signal's aspect ratio. For AV input, it displays the 4:3 image without changing the aspect ratio.
  • Dot by Dot: Displays the input signal pixel-by-pixel as it appears on the screen.

Note: Using screen size adjustments in public or commercial settings may infringe on copyright. If Enlarge (Display Wall) is set, the screen size is fixed to WIDE mode. Dual screen display disables screen size changes.

Remote Control Mode

This allows you to control specific monitors in a multi-display setup.

  • THIS MONITOR ONLY: Controls only the currently selected monitor.
  • ALL MONITORS: Controls all connected monitors. The message "Operating all monitors." will appear. Note that power and input selection may not apply to all monitors.
  • SPECIFIED MONITOR: Controls a monitor with a specific ID number. You can select the ID number using the monitor buttons or by pressing the monitor's MENU button and navigating to the ID No. DISPLAY option.

Caution: When ALL MONITORS mode is active with EXPAND ITEM set to ON, adjusting settings on one monitor may cause the same settings to apply to other monitors.

Menu Options

The monitor features an extensive menu system for adjusting various display parameters.

Menu Navigation

Press the MENU button to display the menu bar. Use the arrow buttons (or cursor buttons on the monitor) to navigate and select options. Press MENU again to exit.

Menu Categories

The menu is organized into several categories:

  • SCREEN: Adjustments related to screen display, including AUTO adjustment, CLOCK, PHASE, H-POS, V-POS, H-SIZE, V-SIZE, H-RESOLUTION, V-RESOLUTION, and RESET.
  • PICTURE: Controls image quality such as CONTRAST, BLACK LEVEL, TINT, COLORS, SHARPNESS, and ADVANCED settings (FLESH TONE, 3D-NR, MPEG-NR, C.M.S. adjustments). It also includes COLOR MODE and WHITE BALANCE settings.
  • AUDIO: Adjusts TREBLE, BASS, BALANCE, and includes a RESET option.
  • SETUP: Contains settings for OSD position, MONITOR orientation (LANDSCAPE/PORTRAIT), LANGUAGE, POWER ON DELAY, OPERATION MODE, STANDBY MODE, and HDMI settings.
  • OPTION: Includes DATE/TIME SETTING, SCHEDULE (Timer), INPUT SELECT, AUDIO SELECT, INPUT SIGNAL settings, SCAN MODE, POWER MANAGEMENT, COLOR SYSTEM, AUDIO OUTPUT, and SELF ADJUST.
  • MULTI: For setting up display walls (ENLARGE) and managing IMAGE POSITION and BEZEL ADJUST.
  • PIP/PbyP: Configures Picture-in-Picture and Picture-by-Picture modes, including PIP MODES, SIZE, POSITION, BLEND, SOURCE, SOUND CHANGE, MAIN POS, PbyP2 POS, and AUTO OFF.
  • FUNCTION: Allows for ALL RESET, ADJUSTMENT LOCK, OSD DISPLAY settings, LED indicator control, TEMPERATURE ALERT, and STATUS ALERT.
  • NETWORK: For configuring LAN settings (LAN SETUP, SECURITY, GENERAL), MAIL settings (ORIGINATOR, RECIPIENT, PERIODICAL), SNMP settings, and SERVICE & SUPPORT (URL INFORMATION).

Note: Some menu options may only be available when the optional PN-ZB02 unit is installed or may vary depending on the input signal.

Adjusting PC Screen Display

This section explains how to use the auto-adjustment feature for PC inputs and how to use the included software for optimal screen display.

Auto Adjustment

When connecting a PC via PC D-SUB or PC RGB input for the first time, or after changing PC settings, use the auto-adjustment feature. This feature automatically adjusts CLOCK, PHASE, H-POS, and V-POS to optimize the screen display.

  1. Switch the input to PC D-SUB or PC RGB and display the test pattern.
  2. Press the MENU button, then navigate to the SCREEN menu.
  3. Select AUTO and press OK.
  4. The monitor will perform auto-adjustment.
  5. Press MENU twice to exit the menu.

Note: If auto-adjustment is not satisfactory, repeat the process or use manual adjustments.

Screen Display for Adjustment

Before adjusting SCREEN or PICTURE menus, display a bright image. The included software (Adj_uty.exe) on the CD-ROM can be used for detailed screen adjustment, especially for Windows 7 and earlier.

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into the PC's drive.
  2. Open the CD drive in "My Computer" (or "Computer").
  3. Run "Adj_uty.exe".
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to adjust the display.
  5. Press the [Esc] key to exit the adjustment program.
  6. Remove the CD-ROM.

Note: If your PC is set to 65,000 colors, color reproduction may vary.

Initialization (Reset) / Function Limit Settings [FUNCTION]

This section covers resetting settings to factory defaults and limiting operations.

Resetting Settings

  • ALL RESET: Resets all settings to factory defaults. After resetting, turn off the main power and then turn it back on.
  • ALL RESET 1: Resets all settings to factory defaults.
  • ALL RESET 2: Resets all settings except for LAN SETUP, RS-232C/LAN SELECT, ID No. SET, BAUD RATE, NETWORK, MAIL, SERVICE & SUPPORT, and SNMP.

Adjustment Lock

This feature disables operations via the monitor's buttons and the remote control.

  • OFF: All operations are enabled.
  • 1: Disables all operations except POWER, FUNCTION, and REMOTE CONTROL MODE.
  • 2: Only FUNCTION and REMOTE CONTROL MODE operations are enabled. All other operations, including power on/off, are disabled.

RS-232C / LAN Control Settings

  • RS-232C/LAN SELECT: Choose between RS-232C or LAN for PC control. Cannot be used simultaneously.
  • OSD DISPLAY: Hides or shows the menu.
  • LED: Specifies whether the power indicator LED is on or off.
  • TEMPERATURE ALERT: Notifies about temperature anomalies. Options include OFF, OSD & LED, or LED.
  • STATUS ALERT: Notifies about hardware errors. Options include OFF, OSD & LED, or LED.

Controlling the Display via PC (RS-232C)

This section details how to control the monitor using a PC via RS-232C serial communication.

Connecting to a PC

1-to-1 Connection: Use a straight-through RS-232 cable to connect the PC's COM port to the monitor's RS-232C input terminal.

Daisy-Chain Connection: Connect the PC's COM port to the first monitor's RS-232C input terminal. Then, connect the first monitor's RS-232C output terminal to the second monitor's input, and so on. Up to 25 monitors can be connected this way.

Communication Conditions: Ensure PC communication settings (baud rate, data length, parity, stop bit, flow control) match the monitor's settings.

Communication Flow: When a command is sent from the PC, the monitor performs the action and sends a response. Command format includes command domain and parameter domain.

Command Format: Commands consist of a command domain (e.g., VOLM for volume) and a parameter domain (e.g., 30 for volume level). Ensure parameters are correctly formatted (e.g., padded with spaces).

Response Codes: The monitor returns response codes like OK (command executed successfully) or ERR (command failed).

Note: If an ID number is set, it must be included in commands for specific monitor control.

Controlling by ID

Commands like IDST (set ID), IDLK (lock ID), IDSL (set ID for next command), and IDCK (check ID) are used to manage individual monitors in a daisy-chain setup.

Forwarding Control

The '+' character in the fourth parameter of a command enables forwarding control, allowing a single command to affect multiple monitors in a chain.

RS-232C Command Table

Detailed tables list commands for controlling various monitor functions, including POWER CONTROL, INPUT MODE SELECTION, SCREEN menu settings, PICTURE menu settings, AUDIO settings, SETUP settings, OPTION settings, MULTI settings, PIP/PbyP settings, FUNCTION settings, and other miscellaneous controls.

Controlling the Display via PC (LAN)

This section explains how to control the monitor over a LAN network.

Connecting to LAN

If the optional PN-ZBO2 unit is installed, the monitor can be connected to a LAN for PC control. A standard LAN cable is required.

LAN Setup: Configure the monitor's IP address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway to match the LAN settings. This can be done via the monitor's menu or through a web browser on a connected PC.

DHCP Client: Set to ON to automatically obtain an IP address from a DHCP server, or OFF to manually assign an IP address.

IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway: Manual configuration settings.

DNS Server: Specifies the DNS server address.

Security: User Name and Password can be set to restrict access via web browser and Telnet. Specific IP addresses can be accepted for access.

Basic Operation via PC (LAN)

Use Internet Explorer on a PC connected to the LAN to control the monitor. Access the monitor's web interface by entering its IP address in the browser's address bar (e.g., http://192.168.150.2/).

The web interface allows control over various settings, including INFORMATION, CONTROL, ADJUSTMENT (SCREEN, PICTURE, AUDIO, SETUP, OPTION, SCHEDULE, MULTI, PIP/PbyP, FUNCTION), NETWORK (LAN SETUP, SECURITY, GENERAL), MAIL, SNMP, and SERVICE & SUPPORT.

Note: Ensure the PC's IP address is temporarily set to access the monitor's default IP address (192.168.150.2) before configuring the monitor's LAN settings.

Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions for common issues:

  • No Picture or Sound: Check power connections, main power switch, standby mode, input mode, and external device status.
  • Buttons Not Working: Check for remote control mode settings, or if the monitor is locked.
  • No Image: Check for interference, ensure the monitor is not in standby mode, and verify input selection.
  • Remote Control Not Working: Check battery installation and charge, ensure the remote is pointed at the sensor, and verify menu lock settings.
  • Uneven Sound or One-Sided Sound: Check audio cable connections, speaker wiring, and the BALANCE setting in the AUDIO menu.
  • Image but No Sound: Check MUTE status, volume level, audio cable connections, and AUDIO SELECT settings.
  • Unstable Video: Check signal compatibility, use auto-adjustment for PC inputs, or verify HDMI/DVI/BNC input settings and cable compatibility.
  • Power Indicator LED Flashing Red: Indicates a hardware problem or temperature alert. Check for overheating or hardware faults.
  • Power Indicator LED Flashing Red and Green Alternately: Indicates a temperature alert. The monitor may automatically enter standby mode if the temperature remains high. Ensure proper ventilation and clean any dust.
