Ford 6R140 Transmission Installation Instructions

For model years 2011-2019.

Introduction and Requirements

The 6R140 transmission installation requires specific diagnostic and flashing tools, notably a Ford IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System) scan and flash tool. Ensure you possess a Ford IDS before commencing installation.

This transmission requires FORD FACTORY TCM (Transmission Control Module) files for tuning. Use of aftermarket transmission tuning files is not permitted and can lead to erratic shifting and transmission failure. Do not use a "Return to stock" TCM file from a tuner, as it may not be calibrated for your specific vehicle. Always reflash Ford Factory TCM tuning after any engine file updates using the IDS.

Part 1: Flashing New Solenoid Strategy Code

After installing the new transmission, connect your IDS and flash the correct solenoid strategy code. Follow these steps:

  1. Using your aftermarket programmer, return the truck to stock programming.
  2. Connect the IDS and start a new session.
  3. Select "All other".
  4. Select "Powertrain".
  5. Select "Transmission".
  6. Select "Transmission Characterization".
  7. Enter the provided solenoid strategy code, which is supplied with your new transmission.

If you plan to change your engine tuning, do so now. Flashing the TCM must be the LAST process performed.

Part 2: Flashing TCM back to Ford Factory Specifications

Connect your IDS to the vehicle and restore the session initiated during the solenoid strategy flashing.

Step 1: Select Module Programming

Ford IDS interface displaying a confirmation dialog box. The dialog shows vehicle details (F-Series Super Duty, 6.7L, Model Year 17) and asks 'An open session was found. Resume?'

Step 2: Select Programmable Module Installation

Step 3: Select TCM

Step 4: Program the TCM

Step 5: Confirmation and Drive Learn Cycle

Screenshot of a Ford IDS software interface displaying 'Step 5' and a success message for module reprogramming, confirming the TCM has been updated and is ready for the drive learn cycle.

Upon successful programming, a message will confirm the TCM has been overwritten with a Ford file, and you can proceed to the drive learn cycle.

Drive Learn Cycle

Begin the break-in and drive learn process for the transmission. This involves the following steps:

  1. Accelerate from a stop to 6th gear using 25% throttle, then allow the vehicle to come to a slow stop. Repeat this 10 times.
  2. Accelerate from a stop to 6th gear using 50% throttle, then allow the vehicle to come to a slow stop. Repeat this 5 times.

Important Notes and Relearn Process

Do not exceed 50% throttle until the drive learn process is fully accomplished.

The relearn process may take up to 5 days, including overnight cool downs. Initial shifts may exhibit a 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 slip flare when cold, which is normal as the TCM adapts. Once these shifts stabilize, you can exceed 50% throttle. Mid and heavy throttle runs may be necessary for the TCM to correctly learn higher throttle positions.

***IMPORTANT***

Anytime engine tuning is updated (any file reflash via a programmer), you MUST reflash the TCM with a Ford IDS scan tool afterward and recomplete the drive learn process. Failure to do so can result in erratic shifting and potential catastrophic transmission damage.

Steps for Engine Tuning Updates:

  1. Using your aftermarket programmer, return the truck to stock programming.
  2. Connect the IDS and start a new session.
  3. Once the session starts, save it and exit the IDS.
  4. Install your new engine file via your programmer.
  5. Perform the TCM flashing steps previously outlined in Part 2.

After these steps, you may begin the break-in and drive learn process as described above.
