FS Video Surveillance Solution Enhances Worker Safety & Streamlines Park Management in Midwestern Industrial Park
Case Study Overview
This case study details how FS provided a comprehensive video surveillance solution for a manufacturing company operating a mid-to-large-sized industrial park in the U.S. Midwest. The goal was to enhance worker safety, streamline park management, and provide continuous protection for people and property across approximately 4 square kilometers, serving around 1,000 employees.
Key Challenges
The industrial park faced several challenges:
- Complex environment with hazardous equipment and restricted zones, leading to safety risks and difficulty in preventing accidents or identifying unsafe behavior.
- Insufficient video records hindered effective incident reviews and training, contributing to recurring safety issues and reduced productivity.
- High foot traffic strained the limited security team's oversight capacity, impacting operational efficiency and employee satisfaction.
- A legacy network architecture was vulnerable to single points of failure, affected video transmission stability, and limited future scalability.
FS Solution Details
FS deployed an end-to-end surveillance solution designed for complete coverage and centralized management:
System Components and Deployment:
- Entrances: Swing barriers and facial recognition terminals were installed, paired with 25X zoom dual-lens cameras to monitor and record all entry and exit activity.
- Perimeter: Active deterrence PTZ cameras were deployed to automatically trigger lights and sound upon detecting abnormal activity.
- High-Risk Areas: 4K dome cameras provided high-definition imaging and intelligent detection for real-time alerts when personnel entered restricted zones.
- Warehouses: 4K UHD bullet cameras were used to safeguard high-value inventory.
- Offices: Compact 2MP cameras were installed to maintain privacy while ensuring visibility.
- Cafeterias: 360° fisheye cameras offered complete coverage of high-traffic areas.
Network Architecture:
A three-layer network architecture was implemented:
- Core Layer: Core switches with multi-rate ports and MLAG (Multi-Link Aggregation) ensured flexible, high-bandwidth transmission and backbone redundancy.
- Aggregation Layer: Aggregation switches acted as a bridge between core and access layers, managing traffic flow.
- Access Layer: PoE switches connected directly to cameras, utilizing VLAN segmentation and plug-and-play deployment for simplified installation and maintenance.
Monitoring Center:
- High-capacity storage was integrated for long-term video retention.
- A centralized VMS (Video Management System) platform provided unified device management.
- Decoders connected to multiple monitors formed a video wall, enabling a single operator to monitor over 100 live streams simultaneously.
The system was built on the ONVIF standard, ensuring seamless integration with the client's existing devices and protecting prior investments while enabling future scalability.
Network Diagram Description
The system's network architecture is structured hierarchically:
- Headquarter: Features an FS SS-C4055 device.
- Core Layer: Connects to the Headquarter and includes FS NVD3512-12M, VMS-503C, and VS-6048D. Two FS 5850-16T16BS2Q switches are linked via MLAG for redundancy.
- Aggregation Layer: Comprises two FS 5850-205Q switches.
- Access Layer: Utilizes FS IES5120-28TS-P and FS S3100-16TMS-P switches, connecting to various surveillance points.
- Surveillance Points: These include Entrance & Exit (with IPC325-4M-PD, ET507-2M-58-W, SWB950-R cameras), Perimeter Area (IPC204-5M-P-V1 camera), Office Area (IPC101-2M-T camera), Warehouse Shelving Area (IPC304-8M-B camera), Operating Area (IPC304-8M-D camera), and Cafeteria (IPC301-5M-F camera).
- Connections: Various connection types are indicated, including Gigabit Ethernet, Gigabit PoE, 10G/25G Fiber, 40G Fiber, and HDMI.
Results and Benefits
The successful deployment of the FS video surveillance system led to significant improvements:
- Reduced Security Costs: 60% reduction in park security personnel costs, saving approximately $350,000 annually.
- Improved Incident Response: Incident response time cut by 50%, enhancing threat detection and emergency handling.
- Decreased Equipment Failures: 25% decrease in park equipment failure rates through simplified maintenance, minimizing downtime and repair costs.
- Hardware Cost Savings: 28% saved on hardware costs by reusing 42% of the park's existing devices via ONVIF-standard integration.
- Enhanced Safety and Satisfaction: Significant improvements in facility and employee safety, with overall employee satisfaction increasing by 90%.
According to the park's management team, "The FS video security solution has fundamentally improved our operations. By providing crystal-clear video evidence and instant alerts, it has slashed our response time to security incidents while enabling proactive prevention of unsafe behaviors. This system doesn't just monitor – it actively safeguards our people and assets."
