How to Win

Objective

Play individually or in teams to reach exactly 1,000 miles. Build mileage with Distance cards. Use Remedy cards to fix Hazards played by opponents, and Go cards to get back on the road. Safety cards offer protection.

Scoring

Add up scores. The player or team with the most points wins.

Card Types Overview

Go Cards

Essential for playing Distance cards. Must be on top of your Drive Pile. Always play a Go card after a Remedy card before playing Distance cards.

Hazard Cards

Red cards played on opponents to stop them. Require a matching Remedy card to cancel their effect.

Remedy Cards

Used to cancel Hazard cards. Must be followed by a Go card to resume play.

Safety Cards

Blue cards that protect against specific Hazards for the rest of the game. Playing a Safety card grants an extra turn.

Distance Cards

Used to build mileage. Can only be played when a Go card is on top of your Drive Pile (unless you have a Right of Way card).

Speed Limit Cards

Played on an opponent's Speed Pile to restrict their Distance card plays.

End of Limit Cards

Cancel Speed Limit cards.

Important Note

Each Safety, Hazard, and Remedy card has a picture in the bottom-right corner indicating its matching card for cancellation. For example, 'Puncture Proof' protects against 'Flat Tire'.

Game Setup

Player Count Variations

2-3 Player Game

Take one of each of the specified cards out of the deck and put them to one side. You don't need them for this game.

4 or 6 Player Game

Play in pairs, with turns alternating between teams. Players share a playing area (Driving Zone). Refer to Scoring Reminder cards for seating examples.

Preparation

  1. Remove the 6 Quick Reference cards and 3 Score Reminder cards from the deck. Give each player a reference card and each player or team a Score Reminder card.
  2. Choose a dealer. Dealer, shuffle the deck and deal 6 cards, facedown, to each player.
  3. Place the remaining cards facedown in the middle as the draw pile.
  4. Players may look at their cards but must keep them secret.
  5. The player to the dealer's left goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.

Gameplay

On Your Turn

  1. Draw one card from the draw pile.
  2. Play one card into your own Driving Zone or an opponent's. If a card cannot be played, discard one faceup onto the discard pile.
  3. Your turn ends. Ensure you have 6 cards in hand.

Going First

If you are the first player, you may play one of the following cards:

  • A Go card: Play this to start your Drive Pile.
  • Any Safety card: Play this into your Safety Area. This grants an extra turn.
  • A Speed Limit card: Play this to start an opponent's Speed Pile to slow them down!

Card Types and Zones

Your Driving Zone Layout

[Diagram illustrating the player's game area, divided into zones: Drive Pile, Speed Pile, Safety Area.]

Drive Pile

Area where your Go cards and subsequent Distance cards are played. A Go card must be on top to play Distance cards.

Speed Pile

Area where opponents play Speed Limit cards to restrict your play. End of Limit cards are played here to cancel the restriction.

Safety Area

Area where Safety cards are played to provide ongoing protection against specific Hazards.

Card Details

Distance Cards

Play these to build mileage. You must have a Go card on your Drive Pile, unless you have a Right of Way card. You can only play two 200-mile cards per Driving Zone.

Speed Limit Cards

Played on an opponent's Speed Pile. If a Speed Limit card is played on you, you cannot play Distance cards higher than 50mph until an End of Limit card is played.

Hazards and Remedies

Hazard cards (e.g., Accident, Flat Tire) are played on an opponent's Drive Pile when they have a Go card. They must be fixed with the matching Remedy card, followed by a Go card to resume playing Distance cards. If an opponent has a Right of Way card, Hazards can be played directly onto Remedies.

Special Safety Card: Right of Way

Playing this card into your Safety Area has special effects:

  • You do not need a Go card on your Drive Pile to play Distance cards.
  • Opponents can play Hazard cards directly onto your Remedy cards.
  • You can ignore Speed Limit cards for the rest of the game!

Safety Cards

Played into the Safety Area to protect against specific Hazards for the entire game. Playing a Safety card grants an immediate extra turn.

Card Examples and Descriptions

[Description of card types with visual cues:]

  • Go Card: [Green card with 'GO' text]. Starts your Drive Pile.
  • Distance Cards: [Cards with mileage values like 50, 100, 200]. Add to your total mileage. Only two 200-mile cards allowed per player.
  • Hazard Cards: [Red cards like 'ACCIDENT', 'FLAT TIRE', 'OUT OF GAS', 'SPEED LIMIT']. Played on opponents.
  • Remedy Cards: [Cards like 'ACCIDENT REPAIRED', 'PUNCTURE REPAIRED']. Used to cancel Hazards.
  • Safety Cards: [Blue cards like 'EXTRA TANK', 'DRIVING ACE', 'PUNCTURE PROOF', 'RIGHT OF WAY']. Played in Safety Area for protection and grant extra turns.
  • Speed Limit Cards: [Cards with speed limits like '50', '75']. Played on opponent's Speed Pile.
  • End of Limit Cards: [Card to cancel speed limits].

Special Moves

Coup Fourré

Pronounced "coo foo-ray". A special move that cancels a Hazard as it's played. If an opponent plays a Hazard card and you have the matching Safety card in hand, you can play it sideways into your Safety Area, declare 'Coup Fourré!', move the Hazard to the discard pile, and take another turn.

[Diagram illustrating the Coup Fourré move: Hazard card played, Safety card played sideways, Hazard moved to discard.]
