General Safety Precautions

Safety Symbols

Symbol Meaning
⚠️ Caution: Refer to this manual before using the meter.
Dangerous voltages.
The tester is protected by double insulation or reinforced insulation.

2. Parts and Controls

Refer to the diagram on page 15 for numbered parts.

(Diagram description: The front view of the PeakTech 2715 tester shows a digital display, several indicator lights (P-E, P-N, P-N REVERSE), a TEST button, and a rotary switch with positions for LOOP (20Ω, 200Ω, 2000Ω) and PSC (200A, 2000A, 20kA), plus an OFF position. The rear view shows a battery compartment with space for six AA batteries and a pothook.)

3. Application / Operating Instructions

Connect the device to the circuit to be measured.

Wiring Check

Before pressing the "Test" button, check the status of the 3 LEDs:

Status LED P-E P-N P<-N Action
Correct wiring ● (On) ● (On) ○ (Off) Start measurement
Not connected ○ (Off) ○ (Off) ○ (Off) Check connection
Ground missing ○ (Off) ○/● (On/Off) ○ (Off) Check connection
Phase/Neutral reversal ○/● (On/Off) ○/● (On/Off) ● (On) Reverse connection

Legend: ● On, ○ Off, ○/● On or Off

If the indicating light status is not as above, do not test and check the wires again.

Voltage Test

When the tester is connected to the power, the LCD will update the voltage (P-E) per second. Do not test if the voltage is unusual or not as expected.

The tester should only be used in AC230V (50Hz) systems.

Loop Test

Turn the tester to the 20Ω, 200Ω, or 2000Ω range. Press the TEST button. The LCD will display the value and unit. The tester beeps once when the test is finished.

To get better values, turn the tester to the lowest range possible. If the LCD flashes ?️ [temperature symbol], disconnect the tester, switch it off, and let it cool down.

Prospective Short Current (PSC) Test

Turn the tester to the 200A, 2000A, or 20kA range. Press the TEST button. The LCD will display the value and unit. The tester beeps when the test is finished.

To get better values, set the tester to the lowest range possible. If the LCD flashes ?️ [temperature symbol], disconnect the tester, switch it off, and let it cool down.

4. Measurement of Loop Impedance and Prospective Short Current

If there is an RCD or fuse in the circuit, it should test loop impedance.

(Diagram description: A schematic shows a power supply with lines L1, L2, L3, PEN, and PE connected to a load. It illustrates the TNC and TNS earthing systems and indicates the loop impedance (Zs) and earth resistance (Ro) paths.)

Loop Impedance (Ra)

According to IEC 60364, every loop should meet the formula: Ra ≤ 50/Ia

When the protection device is an RCD, Ia is the rated residual current I∆n.

I∆n [mA] 10 30 100 300 500 1000
Ia(50V) [Ω]5000166750016710050
Ia(25V) [Ω]2500833250835025

Prospective Short Circuit Current (Zs)

According to IEC 60364, every loop should meet the formula: Zs ≤ Uo/Ia

When the protection device is a Fuse, Uo=230V, Ia and Zsmax:

Rated Current [A] Break time (5s) Break time (0.4s)
Ia(A) Zs(Ω) Ia(A) Zs(Ω)
6288.2474.9
10465822.8

633200.715500.42
804250.548400.27
1005800.3910200.22

Prospective short current must be bigger than Ia.

7. Battery Replacement

When the low battery symbol ? [battery symbol] appears on the LCD, the six 1.5V 'AA' batteries must be replaced.

  1. Turn the device off and remove the test leads.
  2. Unsnap the tilt stand from the rear of the tester.
  3. Remove the four Phillips head screws holding the battery cover.
  4. Remove the battery compartment cover.
  5. Replace the batteries observing polarity.
  6. Affix the rear cover and secure the screws.
  7. Reattach the tilt stand.

(Diagram description: The rear of the tester is shown with the battery compartment open, indicating the correct placement and polarity for six AA batteries.)

8. Notification about the Battery Regulation

The delivery of many devices includes batteries, which for example serve to operate the remote control. There also could be batteries or accumulators built into the device itself. In connection with the sale of these batteries or accumulators, we are obliged under the Battery Regulations to notify our customers of the following:

Please dispose of old batteries at a council collection point or return them to a local shop at no cost. The disposal in domestic refuse is strictly forbidden according to the Battery Regulations. You can return used batteries obtained from us at no charge at the address on the last side in this manual or by posting with sufficient stamps.

Contaminated batteries shall be marked with a symbol consisting of a crossed-out refuse bin and the chemical symbol (Cd, Hg or Pb) of the heavy metal which is responsible for the classification as pollutant:

??️ [crossed-out bin] ? [cadmium symbol] (Cd¹), ⚖️ [mercury symbol] (Hg²), ⚖️ [lead symbol] (Pb³)

1. "Cd" means cadmium.

2. "Hg" means mercury.

3. "Pb" stands for lead.
