BeeConn Lite User Manual

This manual provides instructions for setting up and operating the BeeConn Lite beekeeping scale.

Introduction

Thank you for purchasing BeeConn Lite! Please follow the steps below to set up and use your device.

What's Included in the Package

The package contains the following items:

  • 1. Scale: The main beekeeping scale unit.
  • 2. Solar panel: For charging the scale.
  • 3. USB charger: An alternative charging method.
  • 4. SIM card information: Details regarding the SIM card.

Diagram Description: The package includes the main scale unit, a solar panel with a grid pattern, a USB charger with a cable, and an envelope representing SIM card information.

SIM Card Activation

To use the BeeConn Lite, an active SIM card is required. You can purchase a BeeConn SIM card subscription from the BeeConn web shop or contact them at info@beeconn.net. Have the 20-digit SIM card number ready for activation. After activation, you will receive the phone number used for configuration.

If you wish to use your own SIM card, remove the cover on the bottom of the scale and replace the BeeConn SIM card. Your SIM card must be unlocked and without a PIN. Refer to your SIM card provider for activation instructions.

Diagram Description: A SIM card is shown with a barcode, PIN, PUK, and CE mark. The barcode is labeled "12345678901234567890".

Charging the BeeConn Lite Scale

The BeeConn Lite scale is powered by an internal energy storage capacitor and a small solar panel. The internal storage can power the scale for up to 5 days without sunlight. The scale will resume operation once the solar panel generates energy again. Alternatively, the scale can be powered using the provided USB cable from any USB power source.

For first-time use, it is recommended to charge the scale with the included USB cable for approximately 15 minutes from a USB power source to ensure sufficient power for initial configuration.

Setting up the BeeConn Lite Scale

Place the BeeConn Lite scale on an even, horizontal, hard surface. Ensure the weighing sensor spacers are turned upwards, and the button and power supply connector are accessible when the hive is placed on the scale.

The scale has two holes with a 6.3 mm diameter for attaching it to the surface. (Refer to Picture 3 for details).

Place the beehive on the installed scale, ensuring the bottom of the beehive rests only on the weighing sensor spacers. To ensure accurate weight measurements, the beehive bottom must not touch any other part of the scale.

If the beehive does not have a suitable flat bottom, or if the flat surface does not fully contact the weighing sensor spacers, an interface plate or two crossbars may be needed between the scale and the hive. These can be purchased from the BeeConn web shop or by contacting their team at info@beeconn.net.

Connect the solar panel cable and place the solar panel in a sun-exposed area, such as on top of the beehive. (Refer to Picture 2 for assembly illustration).

Diagram Description (Picture 3): Shows the scale base with dimensions: 303mm height, 403mm width. It indicates "Weight sensor spacer" at both ends, a "Mounting hole" (6.3mm diameter), and the "Power supply connector" and "Button" on the central unit. The internal width is 290mm, and the spacer width is 50mm.

Diagram Description (Picture 2): Illustrates the scale base from a top-down perspective, with red circles highlighting the four points where the beehive should rest. A red arrow points to the location of the power supply connector on the central unit.

Configuring the Scale

Once the scale is powered up and set up, it can be configured for measurements. Follow these steps:

  1. Hold the button on the scale for approximately 8 seconds to initiate configuration mode. The light on the button will start blinking green.
  2. Send the PIN number to the device (default is 1234). The scale will respond with "PIN entry successful, welcome!".
  3. Change PIN: For security, set a personal PIN. This prevents unauthorized contacts from changing scale settings. If the PIN is lost and the owner's phone number is unusable, the scale can only be unlocked by the manufacturer.
  4. Set Contacts: Designate your phone number as Contact 1 by sending the SMS command "Owner". Up to three contacts can be set.
  5. Set Measurement Times: Configure the times for measurements. The scale can perform up to three measurements per day at full hour intervals (e.g., 09:00, 15:00, 21:00). Send "Set meastime HH,HH,HH".
  6. Configuration is complete. Send an "Exit" SMS to finish configuration and put the scale into operation. The scale will respond with "Exiting! Starting normal mode...".

The scale will now perform measurements at the designated times and send SMS data to the configured phone numbers.

Example Measurement SMS:

Scale measurement SMS
Hello! Your BeeConn Lite data:
Weight: 51.38kg, Diff.: +0.38kg
Temp: 23.10°C; Moist: 63.15%
Status: OK
Have a nice day! :)

Additional Settings

To initiate configuration mode, hold the button on the scale for about 8 seconds. The button light will blink green, and Contact 1 (the owner) will receive an SMS: "Hello! Scale is ready to configure".

If another contact initiates configuration mode, they must send an SMS with the PIN: "PIN XXXX". The owner will receive an SMS informing them of this action. The scale will wait up to 3 minutes for a user SMS. Any configuration commands can be performed during this time.

Adding More Contacts

Contact 1 is set as the owner during initial configuration. Up to three contacts can be added. To add Contact 2 or Contact 3, send an SMS with the mobile phone number in international format, e.g., "Set contact 2 +38612345678".

Troubleshooting

Problem Solution
Scale doesn't send SMS Scale is not configured properly; follow configuration steps. The scale may be out of power due to prolonged bad weather; check solar panel placement. The scale will resume normal operation once sufficient power is available.
Scale sends unrealistic measurements Check scale setup. Ensure the hive does not touch the scale housing and rests only on the weighing sensors. Verify the hive doesn't touch any adjacent objects or objects above it.
Scale sends SMS: Wrong command. The SMS sent to the scale was not formatted correctly. Please review the command and spelling.
Scale sends SMS: Device reset! Automatic date/time synch failed. Please set new date/time. Automatic time acquisition from the network failed. Reply with SMS stating the current date and time in the format: HH:MM DD.MM.YYYY.
Scale sends: Wrong PIN. Two attempts left. A wrong PIN was sent, and unlocking was unsuccessful. There are 3 attempts for the correct PIN. If the third attempt fails, the scale will lock itself for 24 hours. After 24 hours, you can perform new attempts.
Scale sends status NOK, xxXX 0001 – low power
0002 – large temperature change
0004 – large moisture change
0008 – large weight change
0009 – low power and large weight change
