Natures Composites: Frequently Asked Questions

Sustainable Outdoor Living

General Questions

Can NC products be cut to a smaller size?

Yes. Natures Composites' wheat-based composite formula can be cut using standard wood-cutting tools. This allows customization of pickets, horizontal fencing, ranch rail, and gardening products. However, NC Gates cannot be cut, and Vertical Fences require professional modification due to metal inserts. Contact Natures Composites for assistance.

When cutting fence panels or ranch rail sections, ensure even cuts for alignment. Shortening a panel requires adjusting the Top Cable Assembly by removing the cable bracket, cutting the cable, and reattaching it with an aluminum ferrule and stop set. The Everbilt 1-1/16 in. Aluminum Ferrule and Stop Set is recommended. Crimp using a hammer for structural integrity.

Can NC products be painted?

No. Painting, staining, or sealing is not recommended and will void the warranty. Natures Composites products are pre-finished with lasting color and a wood-like texture, designed to retain their appearance without additional coatings. Occasional cleaning with mild soap and warm water is sufficient.

Are NC products waterproof?

NC products are highly water-resistant, not fully waterproof. The HDPE plastic used in the composite formula acts as a water barrier, preventing moisture absorption and ensuring durability in damp environments. Prolonged submersion is not recommended.

How do I clean and care for NC products?

Clean products every 6 to 12 months, or more often in dusty areas. Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. For detailed instructions, consult the Care & Cleaning Guide.

Installation & Mounting

Can NC fences and gates be mounted on the surface or do they need to be buried?

For maximum strength and durability, burying posts 24 inches deep in 12-inch diameter holes is recommended. Surface mounting is possible using metal brackets like the RPBZ ZMAX Galvanized Retrofit Post Base. For surface mounting, insert a 4x4 wood post inside the 5x5 composite post for added strength and attach the U-post to the 5x5. Securing one side to a wall or corner provides better support.

What comes with each NC Modern fence or gate purchase?

Each Modern fence panel or gate includes composite boards, posts (U-posts), top caps, and fasteners. For gates, a 5x5 commercial-grade post (94") is required for proper support.

Why do I need to buy 5x5 commercial posts to hang NC gates?

The 5x5 commercial-grade posts provide structural integrity for full-size, perimeter, and ranch rail gates. Burying these posts with an inserted 4x4 wooden post allows for secure attachment of gate latches and hinges, preventing sagging.

Do I need to buy separate posts for Modern Fencing?

No. The patented U-Post is a universal post suitable for line, corner, or start/end positions, simplifying ordering and installation.

Why do I need separate posts for the Traditional Ranch Rail system?

The Traditional Ranch Rail system uses 5x5 posts pre-routed for 2 or 3 rails. Line posts are included, but corner, start, and end posts must be purchased separately to allow for customized layouts.

Can I adjust the spacing between boards on Semi-Privacy or Ranch Rail fences and gates?

Gates cannot be modified. Spacers must remain for alignment, ground clearance, and function; altering gates voids the warranty. For Semi-Privacy and Modern Ranch Rail panels, spacing can be adjusted, but it is not recommended as it may affect height, alignment, and visual design. Traditional Ranch Rail board positions are fixed.

Product Characteristics & Design

Is bowing normal in composite boards?

Yes. Slight bowing due to heat expansion and cold contraction is normal. Natures Composites boards are engineered to tolerate this movement without compromising durability or aesthetics.

Environmental, Durability & Cleaning

Is your product made in the United States?

Yes. Products are manufactured in Wyoming, USA, using domestically sourced wheat straw from local farms.

What makes Natures Composites products environmentally friendly?

The composite formula contains over 50% wheat straw, a farming by-product, combined with recycled HDPE plastic. This creates a durable, long-lasting product that requires no painting or harsh chemicals, supporting local farming and minimizing environmental impact.

Do you add any toxic materials to your products?

No. Materials are non-toxic and safe for children, pets, and the environment. Formaldehyde and harmful VOCs are avoided.

Do your products expand and contract?

Yes. Like all composite materials, expansion and contraction are normal. Gates include adjustable hardware to accommodate this. Installers should follow recommended installation guides for proper spacing.

What color options are available?

Four standard colors are available: Rosewood (Brown), Timber Brown, Raven (Black), and Slate Grey. These pre-finished colors require no maintenance.

Performance & Installation

Can I get different fence heights?

Standard heights are 6 ft (Full Privacy) and 3.5 ft (Perimeter and Ranch Rail). Custom sizes may be available upon request; contact sales.

What fencing span is recommended?

A 6-foot on-center span supported by a 4-rail system is recommended for structural stability and aesthetics. Consult a sales representative for custom spacing.

How do I calculate how many panels I'll need?

Measure the total linear feet and divide by 6. Round up to the nearest whole number for full panels. Factor in gates and corners during planning.

Can I install fencing on a slope?

Yes. The modular systems and U-post design facilitate stepped installations on uneven terrain.

Are your fences wind-resistant?

Yes. Fence systems are wind-rated at 100 mph by Intertek USA (Category 1 hurricane-force winds). Commercial-grade fences are rated higher at 130 mph with 3-second gusts at 147 mph (Category 3 Hurricane Wind).

Do the fences provide noise reduction?

Yes. They are STC-rated at 24, reducing perceived noise by over 75%, making them suitable for residential privacy.

Do your fences provide full privacy?

Yes. Full-privacy systems feature tongue-and-groove pickets to eliminate gaps. Semi-privacy and ranch rail designs are also available.

Do the fences require painting or sealing?

No. The composite color is built into the board and will not fade, chip, or require maintenance like traditional wood. Cleaning with soap and water is sufficient.

How easy is installation?

The patented carpentry-free system is designed for easy installation. Posts, boards, caps, and hardware are included. No sawing or special tools are required; simply slide, align, and secure.
