Galls Traffic Backer FS016 and FS027

CAUTION

Some vehicle manufacturer's may not allow the use of this product on the vehicle's they manufacture. Please consult your operator's manual prior to installation. Also, make sure you fully read and understand all instructions before attempting to install the Flashback Flasher.

Product Overview

The Traffic Backer utilizes the existing brake and back up lights on any vehicle with a 12 VDC negative ground system. A properly installed Traffic Backer will alternate the brake lights, EXCLUDING the third brake light, with the back up lights at a constant rate of 2.4 flashes per second. Alternating red and white light creates an effective warning signal to the rear of the vehicle to greatly reduce rear end collisions.

INSTALLATION

MOUNTING

Mount in the vehicle's trunk near the brake lights.

CONNECTIONS

Use 18 gauge wire on all extensions except the white wire where 16 gauge wire is recommended.

WIRE CONNECTIONS

THREE WIRE SYSTEM

Turn signal and brake light use the same lamp.

  1. Locate and cut the wire that feeds power to the left turn signal/brake light.
  2. Connect the blue wire to the lead that goes back to the signal/brake lights.
  3. Connect the orange wire to the remaining lead that goes to the front of the vehicle.
  4. Locate and cut the wire that feeds power to the right turn signal/brake light.
  5. Connect the yellow wire to the lead that goes back to the right turn signal/brake light.
  6. Connect the pink wire to the remaining lead that goes to the front of the vehicle.

FOUR WIRE SYSTEM

Turn signal and brake light use separate lamps.

  1. Locate and cut the wire that feeds power to the brake lights.
  2. Connect the blue and yellow wires together and then connect them to the lead that goes back to the brake lights.
  3. Connect the orange and pink wires together and then connect them to the remaining lead that goes to the front of the vehicle.

Wiring Diagrams Description

Three Wire System Wiring Diagram Description

This diagram illustrates the connections for the three-wire system. It shows the TRAFFIC BACKER unit with wires labeled BROWN, BLUE, YELLOW, GREEN, WHITE, ORANGE, PINK, and RED/BLACK. The WHITE wire connects to +12 VDC via a FUSE and a SWITCH. The GREEN wire connects to GROUND. The RED wire connects to the vehicle's BACK UP LIGHTS. The BLUE wire connects to the vehicle's BRAKE LIGHTS/TURN SIGNALS (lead going back to lights). The ORANGE wire connects to the vehicle's BRAKE LIGHTS/TURN SIGNALS (lead going to front). The BROWN wire is for optional DECK LIGHTS. The RED/BLACK wire is optional for additional package tray lights.

Four Wire System Wiring Diagram Description

This diagram illustrates the connections for the four-wire system. It shows the TRAFFIC BACKER unit with similar wire labels. The WHITE wire connects to +12 VDC via a FUSE and SWITCH. The GREEN wire connects to GROUND. The RED wire connects to the vehicle's BACK UP LIGHTS. The BLUE and YELLOW wires are connected together and then to the vehicle's BRAKE LIGHTS (lead going back to lights). The ORANGE and PINK wires are connected together and then to the vehicle's BRAKE LIGHTS (lead going to front). The BROWN wire is for optional DECK LIGHTS. The RED/BLACK wire is optional for additional package tray lights.

NOTES AND TESTING

NOTE

On certain vehicles, when both the flashback and the turn signals are operated together, the front turn signal may flash at a nonuniform rate. This condition causes no damage to either the vehicle or the Flasher.

IMPORTANT TEST: Vehicle Safety Systems and Flasher

  1. Set emergency / parking brake and start the vehicle.
  2. With Flasher OFF, attempt to shift the transmission out of PARK without depressing the brake. Transmission must NOT shift. If the vehicle shifts from PARK, disconnect the Flasher, restore the vehicle wiring and contact Galls' Technical Department for further instructions.
  3. With Flasher ON, attempt to shift transmission out of PARK without depressing the brake. Transmission must not shift. If the vehicle shifts from PARK, disconnect the Flasher, restore the vehicle wiring and contact Galls' Technical Department for further instructions.
  4. Periodically have the operator of the vehicle repeat the above test to ensure proper operation of the vehicle safety systems.

WARNING

DO NOT connect the Traffic Backer Taillight Flasher to the High Mounted Stop Lamp (i.e. Cyclops, Center Light, CHMSL). Flashing the High Mounted Stop Lamp violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108 which requires the High Mounted Stop Lamp only illuminate when applying the brakes.

Optional Package Tray Lighting Installation

Figure 1 shows the installation for optional package tray lights using the RED/BLACK wire. The diagram depicts the TRAFFIC BACKER unit connected to a RED/BLACK wire which passes through a 1N400x DIODE. This diode then connects to a SINGLE POLE/SINGLE THROW (S.P.S.T) RELAY. The relay is also connected to the PACKAGE TRAY LIGHTS and to the vehicle's power source. If the Red/Black wire is not used, it should be cut and taped.
