The 39CQM Air Handling Unit is engineered with pioneering features for efficient cooling, meeting Carrier's high industry standards. Key features include:
- Isolation of insulation exposure to the air stream due to double-skin casing with 50mm (2") 40kg/m³ CFC-Free PU insulation.
- Low leak construction with door lock and sealing on the mating panel perimeter.
- Factory-installed unit base of 100mm height, constructed of heavy gauge galvanized steel.
- Options: 125mm optional height, Hot-dipped galvanized steel for marine applications.

Direct Expansion Coil (DX Coil)
- Aluminum/copper coils with belled collars.
- Bonded 1/2" or 3/8” copper tubes by mechanical expansion.
- Galvanized steel casing on coil; stainless steel option available.
- Brass distributors with sweat type connections.

Chilled Water Coil
- Aluminum/copper plate fins coils with belled collars.
- Bonded to 1/2” or 3/8” copper tubes by mechanical expansion.

Spring Isolator
Fan and motor assembly mounted on a common base with color-coded internally-mounted helica spring isolators.
Assembly Fan Housing Motor & Base (FMB)
Ensures proper and easy installation of the fan housing and motor. Made of painted heavy gauge mild steel with power strut type.
Drain Pan & Drain Outlet
- New drain pan assembly for better drainage.
- Side and bottom access drain.
Bearing
Deep groove ball bearing type with adaptor sleeve or spherical roller bearing type seal. Lubricated for longer life and easy maintenance. Mounted within a cast iron housing on a rigid bearing housing assembly.
Fan Discharge Collar
Flanged discharge collar for easy duct connection.
Dampers
- Mixing boxes equipped with opposed blades dampers.
- Option: 3-point / modulating damper actuator.
Taper Lock Pulley
Allows flexibility to change pulley diameter according to fan shaft. Pulleys with taper lock bush for convenient dismantling and maintenance.
Configurable 39CQM
Carrier's customizable HVAC solutions offer three easy steps to select the right specifications:
- Use airflow or coil face area to ascertain the unit size.
- Consider minimum velocity (cooling or heating) of 1.5m/s and maximum velocity for cooling coil (without drift eliminator) of 2.65m/s, or for heating coil of 4.5m/s.
- Determine approximate size of the base unit or necessary sections using estimated dimensions.
- If applicable, select both the base casing unit and motor drive package weight.
Detailed specifications for standard coils are provided in tables, covering AHU Model, Coil Face Area, and Air Volume at various velocities (2 m/s, 2.5 m/s, 3 m/s, 3.5 m/s).

Guide Specification
General
The air handling unit design utilizes modular panels and extruded aluminum perimeter frames with composite corner pieces. Units are available in horizontal/vertical draw-through or horizontal blow-through types. General unit components include:
- Mixing box section
- Heater section
- Fan section
- Filter section
- Coil section
- Access or Plenum section
Casing
Units feature a complete frame with easily removable panels. 39CQM unit sections are supplied with heavy gauge, 125mm optional height and hot-dipped galvanized steel for marine applications. Lifting holes are provided for rigging.
- Panels are sealed with nitrile gasket for a tight seal.
- Mixing Box section: Solid double wall, insulated casing with dampers for fresh air mixing. Hinged access doors available on left, right, or both sides. Viewports and marine lights are optional factory-installed features.
- Filter section: Solid double wall, insulated casing with tracks for filters. Hinged access doors available. Pressure gauges/switches are optional. Filter types include face/side loading pre-filters, face loading bag filters, side loading bag filters, and face loading HEPA filters. Casing panels have no exposed raw edges and feature radiused or chamfered corners.
- Heat Recovery Wheel (HRW) section: Solid double wall, insulated casing with fittings for HRW. Removable access door on the hand side.
Casing panels are 50mm thick with injection foam insulation. Outer panels are painted galvanized steel (sky blue, RAL 5012), inner panels are unpainted galvanized steel. Options for 0.8mm and 1.0mm thick panels, and stainless steel panels are available. Panel coating meets ASTM B117 Standard for 500-hour salt spray test.
Fan section: Solid double wall, insulated casing with base for fan/motor installation. Hinged access doors available. Viewports and marine lights are optional factory-installed features. Blow-thru sections may include a diffuser plate. Fan discharge is square and isolated by flexible canvas connection.
Access and Plenum section: Solid double wall and insulated casing. Hinged access doors available. Viewports and marine lights are optional factory-installed features.
Heater section: Solid double wall, insulated casing with fittings for heater installation. Removable access door on the hand side.
Insulation: Injected cast-in-situ CFC-Free Polyurethane insulation foam with thermal conductivity of 0.020W/mK and density of 40kg/m³.
Coil section: Solid double wall, insulated casing with fittings for coil installation. Hinged access doors or removable access doors available.
Fans
General
Carrier offers various fan types:
- Forward-curved fans: Double width double inlet (DWDI) impeller and scroll, galvanized steel construction for continuous operation. Statically and dynamically balanced per ISO 1940.
- Backward inclined fans: DWDI impeller and scroll, cleaned, primed, and painted with epoxy paint. Designed for continuous operation. Statically and dynamically balanced per ISO 1940.
- Airfoil fan sections: DWDI airfoil fan impeller and scroll. Statically and dynamically balanced per ISO 1940.
- Plenum/Plug fan sections: Single width single inlet (SWSI) fan impeller and scroll. Plug fan is direct driven. Statically and dynamically balanced per ISO 1940.
Fan wheels are keyed to the shaft and designed for continuous operation at maximum rated fan speed and motor horsepower, with operating speed 25% below the first critical speed.
Recommended fan discharge outlet velocity: 10-12 m/s.
Fan shafts are solid carbon steel, turned, ground, polished, and coated with protective paint.
Variable air volume control is available with optional Variable Frequency Drive (VFD).
Performance Ratings
Air performance ratings are certified in accordance with AMCA, if applicable.
Sound Ratings
Manufacturer publishes eight octave sound power for fan inlet, fan discharge, and airborne.
Mounting
Fan scroll, impeller, shaft, bearing, drives, and motor are mounted on a common base assembly, isolated from the outer casing with factory-installed spring isolator and flexible canvas connection.
Bearing
Fan bearings have a nominal 200,000hrs average life (L50) as standard for DWDI and AC Plug Fan.
Motor
Fan motors are mounted within the fan section casing on slide rails for belt tightening.
- IP55 enclosure: Totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) with class F insulation and class B temperature rise, complying with BS2757.
- Standard efficiency type: Optional high efficiency (IE3) motors available, based on IEC 60034-30:2008 Standard.
- Motors are suitable for operation at ambient temperature of 40°C (max) with ±10% voltage utilization range and a 1.15 minimum service factor. For operation > 40°C, consult factory representative.
Drives
Drive assembly includes V-belts and fan/motor pulleys, sized for specified performance.
- V-belts are SPZ, SPA, SPB, or SPC grades, resistant to oil, heat, and static electricity.
- Motor and fan pulley dimensions conform to ISO 4183, using taper-lock bush with set screws for easy assembly/disassembly. Pulleys are phosphated and coated for rust protection.
- Drives have a minimum 1.5 service factor standard, with a 2.0 service factor option. Fixed pitch drives are standard; variable pitch is an option. Drives are factory mounted with sheaves aligned and balanced.
Coils
General
Coil performances are rated per AHRI 410 Standard and tested at 400 psi air pressure submerged under water.
- Coils feature galvanized steel casing with 12.7mm (1/2-in.) OD seamless copper tubes, mechanically expanded into fins for high thermal performance. Optional 9.5mm (3/8”) OD copper tubes available for cooling coils only.
- Aluminum fin coils have belled collars. Optional copper fins or fins with protective coatings are available.
- Aluminum fin coils use galvanized casing and steel tube sheets. Optional stainless steel or aluminum tube sheets are available. Copper fin coils use stainless steel casing and tube sheets.
- Water coils: 1-10 rows, 8-14 fins per inch (fpi). Refrigerant coils: 2-8 rows, 8-14 fpi.
- Moisture eliminator material options: aluminum, mesh aluminum, or PVC.
Cooling and Heating
Cooling, heating, and refrigerant (DX) coils meet scheduled performance. Minimum 12.7mm (1/2-in.) OD seamless copper tubes, mechanically expanded into fins.
Direct Expansion (DX)
- Headers are seamless copper pipe material with brazed joints.
- DX coil circuiting includes dual distributors. Brass nozzles and distributors are factory supplied. Thermal expansion valves provided if specified.
- DX coils feature full face active area with row-split intertwined circuits for equal loading. Suction and thermal valve connections are on the same side.
- DX coils are designed for counter flow arrangements.
Filter
Primary filter sections accept 25mm or 50mm (G3 or G4) washable or disposable filters.
Bag filter sections accept (F5 - F9) bag filters up to 529mm length with 22mm header.
Blow-thru HEPA filter sections have a face loading filter frame for standard 300mm deep HEPA filters (H13-H14).
Optional Magnehelic / Minihelic filter gages or filter switches are available for pressure drop measurement.

European Efficiency Classes are based on European Standards EN 779 and EN 1882.
MXB Dampers
Damper frame is made of extruded and anodized aluminum. Damper blades are airfoil shaped for high velocity and static pressure. Flexible synthetic blade edge seals ensure low leakage.
Accessories / Options
Viewports
Factory-installed option on access doors. Fabricated from round, double plane, clear, rigid polycarbonate with a minimum diameter of 200mm. Installed with screws that do not contact the internal surface of the unit. Gasketed with TPE gaskets for air-tightness and capable of withstanding unit operating pressures.
Marine Lamp
Factory-installed option on mixing box, empty, and fan sections. Vapor tight and rated to IP44. Consists of a structural light fitting base with aluminum reflector receptacle and structural glass globe protected by wire mesh. Includes a light bulb, factory-installed wiring, and an IP55 rated external switch.
