Introduction to Operation

Turning On/Off and Volume

To Turn On: Rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise. You will hear a startup tone and possibly channel announcements or battery status. The LED may blink red briefly.

To Turn Off: Rotate the Power/Volume knob counter-clockwise until it clicks. The LED will turn off.

Volume Adjustment: Rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise to increase volume, counter-clockwise to decrease. ?

? Do not hold the radio too close to your ear when adjusting volume or listening at high volume.

Channel Selection

Use the Channel Selector Knob to choose a channel. The radio may announce the channel number. Each channel can be programmed with specific frequency, code, and scanning settings.

Talking and Monitoring

Monitoring: Press and hold SB1 to listen for activity on the current channel. You will hear static if there is no activity. Release SB1 to stop monitoring.

Talking: Press and hold the PTT button to transmit. Release to listen. The LED will turn red when transmitting or receiving.

? To listen for activity on a channel with squelch disabled, briefly press SB1 to set the CTCSS/DPL code to 0 (CTCSS/DPL Defeat).

Receiving a Call

1. Select the desired channel using the Channel Selector Knob.

2. Ensure the PTT button is not pressed and listen for transmissions.

3. The LED will blink red when the radio receives a call.

4. To respond, hold the radio 2.5-5.0 cm from your mouth and press PTT to talk.

Talk Range

Motorola XT series radios are designed for maximum range. For optimal performance and to avoid interference, maintain a distance of at least 1.5 meters from other radios. The XT460 offers a range of up to 16,250 sq. meters, 13 floors, or 9 km in open flat areas.

Range is affected by terrain, concrete structures, dense vegetation, and indoor/vehicle use. Optimal range is in open areas. Average range is with buildings/trees. Minimal range is with dense vegetation/mountains.

For successful two-way communication, channel, frequency, and elimination codes must match on both radios.

Key settings for communication:

  • Channel: Current channel selected.
  • Frequency: Transmit/receive frequency.
  • Elimination Code (CTCSS/DPL/PL): Helps minimize interference by filtering transmissions.
  • Privacy Code (Encryption): Prevents unauthorized listening.
  • Bandwidth: Channel spacing, must match for optimal audio.

Programming Functions

Entering Programming Mode

Programming mode allows configuration of radio functions via the radio's front panel. To enter, press and hold PTT and SB1 simultaneously while turning the radio on. A tone indicates entry, and the LED will pulse green. The default programming mode is "Standby".

Once in programming mode, the 'PROG' icon appears, and the current channel alias blinks, allowing channel selection via the knob. You can set frequencies, CTCSS/DPL codes, encryption, bandwidth, channel count, call tones, microphone gain, and scanning.

  • To change programming options without saving: Briefly press PTT or [Button Icon].
  • To save changes: Press and hold PTT. The radio returns to Standby programming mode.
  • To exit programming mode: Press and hold PTT in Standby programming mode.
  • Changes are automatically saved when exiting programming mode or turning off the radio.
  • To exit without saving: Turn off the radio (unless returning to the start of programming options).

Computer Programming Software (CPS)

Motorola XT series radios can be programmed using CPS. Download CPS for free at www.motorolasolutions.com.

CPS allows programming of frequencies, PL/DPL codes, repeater/non-repeater operation, time-out timers, power settings, battery types, scan lists, call signals, encryption, and Reverse Burst.

CPS is useful for locking front-panel programming or restricting function changes to prevent accidental data loss. It also offers profile management with password protection.

(*) The CPS programming cable is a separate accessory. Refer to the Accessories section for part numbers.

Detailed CPS information is available on the CPS CD.
