Introduction
Thank you for choosing Mackie's active sound reinforcement speaker systems. The SWA1801z is a high-output active subwoofer system featuring a high-precision 18" transducer and application-specific amplifier technology. It consists of a single, compact subwoofer cabinet with integrated control and amplifier electronics.
The SWA1801z accepts stereo or mono line-level signals via female XLR input jacks. Male XLR Thru jacks allow daisy-chaining to additional SWA1801z cabinets. The built-in crossover separates low frequencies from high frequencies, routing the high frequencies to the male XLR high-pass output jacks. These can connect to full-range active speakers (like the Mackie SA1521z) or an amplifier powering passive speakers.
A Phase switch allows 180° polarity reversal, and a Subwoofer Level control adjusts the balance between the subwoofer and full-range speakers. The integrated amplifier delivers 800 watts of continuous power and is mounted on a heatsink, eliminating the need for fans for increased reliability and reduced maintenance.
The cabinet is constructed from 15 mm thick multi-layered birch plywood, with integrated carrying handles and rear casters for transport.

Rear Panel Description
The rear panel features the following controls and connectors:
- POWER Switch: Turns the SWA1801z on and off. Ensure the signal source level is down before powering on.
- AC Receptacle: Connects the AC linecord for power to the built-in amplifiers. Use a socket configured for your model.
- LIMIT Indicator: Lights when the built-in limiter activates to prevent amplifier output from overdriving transducers. Occasional blinking is normal; continuous or frequent blinking indicates the need to reduce the level control.
- SIGNAL Present Indicator: Illuminates when a signal is present at the FULL RANGE INPUT connector.
- THERMAL Indicator: Lights if the internal temperature exceeds safe operating levels, muting the signal to allow cooling. Normal operation resumes once cooled. If frequent activation occurs, address thermal issues (see Thermal Considerations).
- POWER Indicator: A green LED that lights when the POWER switch is ON and AC power is connected, indicating the unit is ready. A similar blue LED is on the front panel.
- FULL RANGE INPUT: Female XLR connectors accepting a balanced line-level signal from a mixing console or other source.
- THRU (FULL RANGE OUTPUT): Male XLR connectors outputting the same signal as the FULL RANGE INPUT. Used for daisy-chaining multiple SWA1801z units.
- HIGH PASS (MID/HIGH FREQ) OUTPUT: Male XLR connectors outputting frequencies above 120Hz. Connect to full-range active speakers or an amplifier/passive speaker combination.
- SUBWOOFER LEVEL Control: Adjusts the subwoofer's output level. The center detent provides a starting point for balancing with main speakers.
- PHASE: Reverses the subwoofer output polarity by 180°. Experiment with this switch to optimize low-frequency response based on speaker placement.
Diagram Description: The rear panel features a power switch, AC receptacle, various indicators (LIMIT, SIGNAL, THERMAL, POWER), XLR input/output connectors (FULL RANGE INPUT, THRU, HIGH PASS), a SUBWOOFER LEVEL control, and a PHASE switch. Power specifications and certifications (CE) are also visible.
Hookup Diagrams
The following diagrams illustrate common connection scenarios:
- 2 SWA1801z with 2 SA1521z: Two SWA1801z subwoofers are connected to two Mackie SA1521z full-range speakers. Line-level mid/high signals are sent to the SA1521z speakers, while the SWA1801z units handle low frequencies. Power cords are connected to each unit.
- 2 SWA1801z with Stereo Amplifier and 2 C300z: Two SWA1801z subwoofers are connected to a stereo power amplifier driving two C300z full-range speakers. The signal path involves line-level inputs to the SWA1801z, with high-pass outputs feeding the stereo amplifier. Power cords are connected to all components.
- 1 SWA1801z with 2 SRM450s: One SWA1801z subwoofer is connected to two Mackie SRM450 full-range speakers. Line-level signals are sent to the SRM450s, and the SWA1801z handles low frequencies. Power cords are connected to each unit.
- 1 SWA1801z with Stereo Amplifier and 2 C300z: One SWA1801z subwoofer is connected to a stereo power amplifier driving two C300z full-range speakers. The SWA1801z receives the low frequencies, and its high-pass output feeds the stereo amplifier. Power cords are connected to all components.
Connections
The SWA1801z features two female XLR inputs for balanced line-level signals, wired per AES standards (Pin 2: Hot, Pin 3: Cold, Pin 1: Shield).
For unbalanced signals, connect the signal high (hot) to Pin 2 and the unbalanced ground to the input low (Pin 3) and ground (Pin 1). For ground-loop issues, connect the unbalanced ground only to Pin 3, leaving Pin 1 disconnected.
Four male XLR connectors are provided:
- THRU (FULL RANGE OUTPUT): Outputs the exact same signal as the input, allowing daisy-chaining of multiple SWA1801z units.
- HIGH PASS (MID/HIGH FREQ) OUTPUT: Outputs frequencies above 120Hz, suitable for connecting to full-range speakers or an amplifier.
Diagram Description: Diagrams illustrate balanced XLR connections with Hot, Cold, and Shield pins. An unbalanced male XLR connector diagram shows wiring for unbalanced signals.
Placement
The SWA1801z is designed for floor mounting. A socket on top accommodates Mackie SA1521z or SRM450 active speakers using an optional mounting pole (SPM100).
VERY IMPORTANT: As with any powered components, protect the SWA1801z from moisture. If used outdoors, ensure it is under cover, especially if rain is expected.
WARNING: The cabinet has no rigging points and is not suitable for rigging. NEVER attempt to suspend the SWA1801z by its handles.
AC Power
Ensure the SWA1801z is plugged into an outlet capable of supplying the correct voltage for your model. Voltage drops below 97% of specified line voltage may prevent amplifiers from reaching full rated power. Ensure the electrical service can supply sufficient amperage for all connected components.
A robust AC power supply is recommended due to the high current demands of the amplifiers. Insufficient AC power can lead to reduced output and poor bass performance.
VERY IMPORTANT: Never remove the ground pin on the power cord. This is very dangerous.
Thermal Considerations
The SWA1801z features an 800-watt amplifier module mounted on a large heatsink for efficient cooling via convection. Adequate airspace (at least six inches) behind the loudspeaker is crucial for proper operation and longevity.
If the amplifier overheats, a built-in thermal switch will mute the signal until the unit cools down. If this occurs frequently, reduce the level control on the source or subwoofer, or ensure the room temperature is not excessively high. Aiming a fan at the rear panel can help improve airflow.
Service Information
For troubleshooting, consult the following or visit the Mackie website (www.mackie.com/support) for FAQs, documentation, and user forums.
Troubleshooting
- No Power: Check if plugged in, if the AC outlet is live, and if the POWER switch is ON. Verify the POWER LED is green. If not, the AC line fuse may be blown (not user-serviceable; see Repair).
- No Sound: Verify input LEVEL controls are up, signal source is working, and cables are secure. Ensure the mixing console output is sufficient. Check for mixer Mute or Processor loop engagement. Ensure thermal protection is not active (check ventilation).
- Poor Bass Performance: Check speaker polarity connections. Try the PHASE switch on the rear panel.
- Poor Sound (Loud & Distorted): Ensure signal chain levels are not too high (not overdriving). Verify input connectors are fully plugged in and secure. Periodically clean electrical connections.
- Noise: Ensure all connections to active loudspeakers are good. Route signal cables away from AC cables, power transformers, and EMI-inducing devices. Avoid light dimmers or SCR-based devices on the same AC circuit; use an AC line filter or a different circuit.
- Hum: Disconnect the input cable; if hum disappears, it may be a ground loop. Use balanced connections, plug audio equipment into outlets sharing a common ground, and keep distances to ground short.
