Midas 512

500 Series Parametric Equaliser

Quick Start Guide

Introduction

The Midas 512 is a 4-band fully parametric equaliser based on the Midas HERITAGE 3000 console. It is designed for mounting into a 500 series rack chassis or box.

Important Safety Instructions

General Precautions:

  • Terminals marked with a lightning bolt symbol (⚡) carry electrical current of sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electric shock.
  • Use only high-quality professional speaker cables with pre-installed " TS or twist-locking plugs.
  • All other installation or modification should be performed only by qualified personnel.
  • The symbol, wherever it appears, alerts you to the presence of uninsulated dangerous voltage inside the enclosure – voltage that may be sufficient to constitute a risk of shock.
  • The symbol, wherever it appears, alerts you to important operating and maintenance instructions in the accompanying literature. Please read the manual.
  • Caution: To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not remove the top cover (or the rear section). No user-serviceable parts inside. Refer servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Caution: To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose this appliance to rain and moisture. The apparatus shall not be exposed to dripping or splashing liquids, and no objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on the apparatus.
  • Service instructions are for use by qualified service personnel only. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not perform any servicing other than that contained in the operation instructions. Repairs must be performed by qualified service personnel.

Operational Precautions:

  • Read and keep all instructions.
  • Heed all warnings and follow all instructions.
  • Do not use this apparatus near water.
  • Clean only with a dry cloth.
  • Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
  • Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two blades, one wider than the other. A grounding-type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.
  • Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched, particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where it exits the apparatus.
  • Use only attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.
  • Use only with the cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the apparatus. Use caution when moving cart/apparatus combinations to avoid tip-over injuries.
  • Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.
  • Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been damaged in any way, such as power supply cord or plug damage, liquid spillage, objects fallen into the apparatus, exposure to rain or moisture, abnormal operation, or dropping.
  • The apparatus shall be connected to a MAINS socket outlet with a protective earthing connection.
  • Where the MAINS plug or an appliance coupler is used as the disconnect device, the disconnect device shall remain readily operable.

Correct Disposal:

This symbol (♻️) indicates that this product must not be disposed of with household waste, according to the WEEE Directive (2012/19/EU) and national law. Installation:

  • Do not install in a confined space, such as a book case or similar unit.
  • Do not place naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, on the apparatus.
  • Dispose of batteries responsibly, considering environmental aspects. Batteries must be disposed of at a battery collection point.
  • This apparatus may be used in tropical and moderate climates up to 45°C.

Controls

1. Mounting Holes
The 512 module is mounted to the host 500 series rack chassis or box (e.g., Midas Legend L6 or L10) and secured using two screws.
2. Treble Frequency Control
Outer knob for continuous adjustment of the frequency range from 1 kHz to 20 kHz.
3. Treble Gain Control
Inner knob for continuous adjustment of treble cut and boost from -15 dB to +15 dB with a 0 dB centre detent.
4. BELL Switch (Treble)
When selected, the treble equaliser curve changes from the traditional Midas shelving response to fully parametric operation. A green LED indicates BELL mode is active.
5. Treble Width Control
Knob for continuous control of bandwidth from 0.1 to 2 octaves. Operates only when the BELL switch is selected.
6. Hi Mid Frequency Control
Outer knob for continuous adjustment of the frequency range from 400 Hz to 8 kHz.
7. Hi Mid Gain Control
Inner knob for continuous adjustment of cut and boost from -15 dB to +15 dB with a 0 dB centre detent.
8. Hi Mid Width Control
Knob for continuous control of bandwidth from 0.1 to 2 octaves.
9. Lo Mid Frequency Control
Outer knob for continuous adjustment of the frequency range from 100 Hz to 2 kHz.
10. Lo Mid Gain Control
Inner knob for continuous adjustment of cut and boost from -15 dB to +15 dB with a 0 dB centre detent.
11. Lo Mid Width Control
Knob for continuous control of bandwidth from 0.1 to 2 octaves.
12. Bass Frequency Control
Outer knob for continuous adjustment of the frequency range from 20 Hz to 400 Hz.
13. Bass Gain Control
Inner knob for continuous adjustment of cut and boost from -15 dB to +15 dB with a 0 dB centre detent.
14. BELL Switch (Bass)
When selected, the bass equaliser curve changes from the traditional Midas shelving response to fully parametric operation. A red LED indicates BELL mode is active.
15. Equaliser IN Switch
Inserts the equaliser into the signal path. A yellow LED indicates the equaliser is active. When deselected, all circuitry is bypassed (true relay hardware bypass). True bypass also occurs if the rack is powered down.
16. Bass Width Control
Knob for continuous control of bandwidth from 0.1 to 2 octaves. Operates only when the BELL switch is selected.

Getting Started

The 512 EQ module is designed to be mounted into a 500 series rack chassis or box, such as the Midas Legend L6 or L10. The L6/L10 supplies the input and output connections to the 512 module, as well as internal power.

  1. With the power to the L6/L10 turned off, install the 512 module by sliding it in carefully so its rear connector correctly fits into the corresponding multi-pin connector of the L6/L10. Use 2 screws to secure the 512 module to the front top and bottom rails.
  2. Blank spaces in your L6 or L10 can be filled using the Midas L1B blank plates. These plates will prevent dirt, dust and other objects from entering the unit.
  3. Insert any other modules in your system.
  4. Connect your audio equipment to the input and output of the L6/L10.
  5. Turn on the power to the L6/L10. The 512 module is equipped with an internal power on/off mute relay. After power up, there is a 2-second delay before the output is connected, to avoid power-on thumps. The relay also prevents power-off thumps by muting the output during power down.

Block Diagram

The block diagram illustrates the signal flow. Audio input enters the unit and passes through an input buffer. It then proceeds to the equaliser section, which includes controls for Treble (frequency, gain, width, BELL switch), Hi Mid (frequency, gain, width), Lo Mid (frequency, gain, width), and Bass (frequency, gain, width, BELL switch). The equaliser section has an 'IN' switch to engage or bypass the processing. After the equaliser, the signal passes through an output driver and then to the output.
