Using the Cuisinart Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker
Before First Use:
Ensure all packaging is removed. Place on a flat surface. Clean the lid, freezer bowl, and mixing paddle in warm, soapy water. Do not use abrasive cleaners or hard implements.
Preparing the Freezer Bowl:
The freezer bowl must be completely frozen before use. Wash and dry the bowl, then wrap it in a plastic bag to prevent freezer burn. Freezing time depends on freezer temperature, typically a minimum of 24 hours at -18°C or cooler. To check if frozen, shake the bowl; no liquid sound means it's frozen.
Place the bowl in the coldest part of the freezer, upright, on a flat surface for even freezing. It is recommended to keep the freezer bowl in the freezer at all times for immediate use.
Note: The freezer bowl should be at a minimum temperature of -19°C before churning begins.
Assembling the Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker:
N.B: The bowl will defrost rapidly after removal from the freezer. Have your recipe ready before assembly.
- Remove the freezer bowl from the freezer. Place it into the main housing of the ice cream maker. Locate and align the mixing paddle into the hole on the underside of the lid. Push until it clicks and locks into place.
- Slide the topping containers into the indent on the side of the ice cream maker. Place the lids over them. Note: Topping containers with rounded edges should be inserted into the side spaces.
- Attach the dispensing arm with the handle. Position it underneath the product at a 45-degree angle to the front. Align the hole in the unit with the dispensing hole in the handle and turn clockwise until the handle is in position.
- Slide the toppings chute into the provided space underneath the topping containers until it stops.
- Place the drip tray on the base, under the dispenser. Put the lid, with the mixing paddle, over the ice cream bowl and push down until it clicks securely into place. To remove the lid, push the two side tabs.
Making Soft Serve Ice Cream & Frozen Yoghurt
Assemble the maker and fill topping containers with desired toppings. Do not place liquids in topping containers.
Prepare your ice cream recipe. The maximum capacity is 800ml of mixture, as ingredients increase in volume during churning. For best results, use pre-chilled ingredients (ideally below 4°C) and prepare them in an easy-to-pour container.
Add the freezer bowl to the machine when ready to start churning.
Note: The bowl will begin to defrost quickly, so use it immediately after removing from the freezer.
Turn the power dial to ON. The mixing paddle will start turning. Add the ice cream mixture through the opening in the lid.
Note: Before pouring mixture, ensure the dispensing handle is locked and in the upright position.
Ice cream will be ready in approximately 25-30 minutes, depending on recipe and volume. Set a timer for 15 minutes and check consistency. Always keep the mixing paddle churning while dispensing.
Dispensing Soft Serve Ice Cream or Frozen Yoghurt:
When ready, the paddle must continue churning. Hold an ice cream cone or bowl below the chute and pull down the handle. Turn the cone/bowl as you dispense to swirl. Push the handle up to stop the flow.
Important: The ice cream maker must not be switched off and should continue to churn during dispensing.
Note: To test consistency, pull down the handle and dispense a small amount. If too runny, pour back into the bowl and continue churning.
Note: Most cone sizes fit, but taller cones may need tilting.
Turn topping dispenser dials to add toppings. Hold the cone/bowl close to the chute to avoid mess.
Note: The knob may be difficult to turn if toppings are too sugary.
Note: Sugary toppings should only be filled in small amounts and emptied after use to prevent sticking.
Serve quickly while the machine is on and churning.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT switch off the machine when churning, as the mixture may freeze and prevent resuming the process.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT store frozen desserts in the ice cream bowl. Store in an airtight container. Ice cream may lose its soft consistency if stored in a freezer.
Ice Cream Guide:
Description | |
---|---|
[Soft Serve] | Semi-solid ice cream, containing less milk fat than regular ice cream, resulting in a smoother texture. |
[Frozen Yoghurt] | Fresh yoghurt, frozen and aerated. Usually more tart than ice cream, and lower in fat. |
Recommended Toppings:
- Crushed M&Ms*
- Crushed Chocolate Chips*
- Sprinkles
- Chocolate Sprinkles
- Crushed Nuts
- Finely Crushed Biscuits & Cookies
NOTE: Do not use full-size M&Ms or chocolate chips as they are too large. Sprinkles are recommended over hundreds & thousands as they dispense better.
NOTE: To ensure toppings dispense correctly, fill topping containers using the mix-in gauge.
Using the Keep Warm Plate
The keep warm plate can be used to keep sauces and toppings warm. To switch on, turn the dial on the side of the ice cream maker to 'keep warm'.
Note: The keep warm plate should only keep pre-warmed sauces and toppings warm; it is not for warming up sauces or melting chocolate.
Motor Overload Protection
The Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker has overload protection that shuts off the motor if it overheats. This can happen if the dessert is extremely thick, the unit runs for too long, or the mixing paddle is obstructed.
To reset: Unplug the unit, let it rest for at least 20 minutes, then turn it on again.
If the ice cream freezes and stops the paddle, or becomes too thick to dispense: Stop the machine, remove the ice cream bowl, and scoop the ice cream into a suitable airtight container for freezer storage.
Troubleshooting
Problem | Solution |
---|---|
Ice cream bowl is not freezing | Turn the freezer temperature to a colder setting (-18°C or below). Do not wash the bowl in the dishwasher. Do not let the freezer bowl sit outside the freezer for more than 5 minutes before making ice cream. |
Ice cream is not ready in recommended time | Check recipe for correct ingredients and quantities. Ensure the freezer bowl is frozen for 24 hours (no liquid sound when shaken). Using non-pre-chilled ingredients will increase churning time. |
Soft serve ice cream is not dispensing | The ice cream may be too thick. Reduce churning time if necessary. Ensure you are using a recipe developed for this maker; other recipes may require scooping directly from the bowl. Check recipe for correct ingredients and quantities. If it won't dispense, scoop out into a container. |
Motor stalls | Ice cream may be too thick. Check processing time. Turn off the maker for at least 20 minutes. Clean the maker and refreeze the bowl. Make a new batch once the bowl is frozen for the recommended time. |
Toppings are not dispensing | Check toppings chute for blockages; clean and dry it. Ensure toppings are not melting. Check for jammed toppings. Toppings may be too small or too large. |
The mixing paddle is not turning | Check for ice in the freezer bowl (freezer burn). Wrap bowl in a plastic bag before freezing to prevent this. Ensure the unit is on. Ice cream may be too thick. Ensure the mixing paddle is properly locked by aligning the gear drive into the hole on the underside of the lid and pushing until it clicks. |

Prep Time: 5 mins plus 4 hours chill time
Churning Time: 25 - 27 mins

- 235ml full fat milk, well chilled
- 150g caster sugar
- 500ml thickened cream, well chilled
