Introduction
The Meade LX85 Illuminated Polar Scope is designed to enhance the precision of telescope mounts, particularly for astrophotography. While casual observers may not require its use, it is essential for achieving accurate polar alignment with the celestial poles. The scope features a reticle pattern to assist users in this process.
Installation
To install the polar scope, remove the front and rear polar axis covers and thread the Meade LX85 polar scope into the mount until firmly seated. Ensure covers are replaced when not in use.
Alignment
Proper alignment of the polar scope to the mount's polar axis is crucial. This involves setting up the mount outdoors, removing optical tubes and counterweights, and aligning the polar axis with a distant terrestrial object. The reticle's focus should be adjusted, and the mount's RA axis rotated to check for target movement. Adjustments are made using reticle adjustment screws, ensuring gradual, opposing turns to maintain alignment.
Calibration
For enhanced accuracy, calibrate the RA setting circle, Calendar-dial scale, and Longitude-offset indicator. This involves aligning specific marks on these dials with indicators on the mount, ensuring accurate date and time referencing for polar alignment.
Using the Polar Scope
Once aligned and calibrated, the polar scope is ready for use. Point the assembled LX85 mount towards True North. Remove covers, rotate DEC to 90 degrees, and align the RA setting circle with the current date on the calendar dial. For the Northern Hemisphere, position Polaris within the reticle's reference circle. For the Southern Hemisphere, align the reticle pattern with the four-star group in Octans. The illuminated reticle can aid visibility. Tighten all adjustment knobs once the celestial pole is centered.
