What is USB-ISO-HS

The USB-ISO-HS is a High-Speed isolator designed to provide galvanic isolation between the USB host and device. It protects the connected device from power shocks and helps avoid ground loops, which can be problematic in audio applications.

It supports USB transfer modes: Low (1.5Mbps), Full (12Mbps), and Hi-speed (480Mbps). Hi-speed 480Mbps is particularly required by DACs supporting sample rates higher than 96kHz/24bit, and for multi-channel DACs. This high speed is also utilized by high-speed JTAG adapters and Digital Storage Oscilloscopes.

The USB-ISO-HS can supply up to 350mA to the USB device. For applications requiring more power, an external power supply can be connected to the PWR jack. It is crucial to note that this external power supply will be connected directly to the USB device and must also be galvanically isolated. In most scenarios, the 350mA provided by the USB bus is sufficient, and external power is not needed.

Power Supply

The USB-ISO-HS can receive power from two sources:

  • External power jack: Accepts 8V to 15V DC. The maximum available current depends on the external power supply's capability, up to 750 mA.
  • USB_DEVICE connector: Operates at 5V. The maximum available current depends on the PC USB host's capability, up to 350 mA.
