Exercise Guidelines
Using your Bike will provide several benefits, including improved physical fitness, muscle toning, and weight loss when combined with a calorie-controlled diet.
1. The Warmup Phase
This stage helps get the blood flowing and muscles working properly, reducing the risk of cramp and muscle injury. Perform a few stretching exercises, holding each for approximately 30 seconds. Do not force or jerk your muscles; stop if it hurts.
Stretching Exercises:
- Side Bends
- Forward Bends
- Inner Thigh Stretch
- Outer Thigh Stretch
- Calf / Achilles Stretch
2. The Exercise Phase
This is where you exert effort. Regular use will make leg muscles more flexible. Maintain a steady tempo. The rate of work should be sufficient to raise your heartbeat into the target zone shown on the graph below. This stage should last a minimum of 12 minutes, with most people starting at 15-20 minutes.
Heart Rate Zone Graph:
The graph illustrates target heart rate zones based on age. The Y-axis represents Heart Rate (from 80 to 200 bpm), and the X-axis represents Age (from 20 to 75 years). The graph shows:
- Cool Down: Below 70% of Maximum Heart Rate
- Target Zone: Between 70% and 85% of Maximum Heart Rate
- Maximum: 100% of Maximum Heart Rate
3. The Cool Down Phase
This stage allows your Cardio-vascular System and muscles to wind down. Reduce your tempo and continue for approximately 5 minutes. Repeat the stretching exercises, again remembering not to force or jerk your muscles. As you get fitter, you may need to train longer and harder. It is advisable to train at least three times a week, spacing workouts evenly.
Muscle Toning:
To tone muscle, set the resistance quite high. This will put more strain on leg muscles and may limit training duration. For improved fitness, alter your training program: maintain normal warmup and cooldown phases, but increase resistance towards the end of the exercise phase to work legs harder. You may need to reduce speed to keep your heart rate in the target zone.
Weight Loss:
The key factor is the amount of effort and duration of your workout. Working harder and longer burns more calories. This is effectively the same as training to improve fitness; the difference lies in the goal.
