Bosch Lambda Sensor LSU 4.9

Technical Datasheet

Overview

The Bosch Lambda Sensor LSU 4.9 is a planar ZrO2 dual cell limiting current sensor with an integrated heater, designed to measure the proportion of oxygen in automotive exhaust gases for gasoline or Diesel engines. Its monotonic output signal across the lambda range of 0.65 to air makes it a versatile sensor for lambda 1 measurements and other lambda ranges. The sensor features a robust design and high Bosch production quality. It operates in conjunction with a special LSU-IC, commonly found in Bosch Motorsport ECUs and lambda control units like LT4.

Key Features

Current vs. Lambda Data

Note: U<0xE2><0x82><0x90> is not an output signal of the lambda sensor, but the output of the evaluation circuit. Only Iₚ correlates with the oxygen content of the exhaust gas. Amplification factor v=17 is typically used for lean applications (lambda>1), amplification factor v=8 is typically used for rich applications (lambda<1).

Heater Strategy

The heater strategy involves applying an effective heater voltage (U<0xE1><0xB5><0xBD><0xE1><0xB5><0x93><0xE1><0xB5><0x93>) that is initially high (e.g., 13V) to reduce heater power during condensation (water phase). The voltage is then reduced to an operating point (e.g., 8.5V) after a certain time. A maximum ramp rate of 0.4V/s is specified. The process is application-specific.

Installation Notes

  • The sensor must operate with a special LSU-IC (e.g., in Bosch Motorsport ECUs and LT4 units). More information is available on the Bosch Motorsport homepage under Accessories/Expansion Modules.
  • Install the sensor at a point that measures a representative exhaust-gas mixture and does not exceed the maximum permissible temperature.
  • Install at a point where the gas is as hot as possible.
  • Observe the maximum permissible temperature.
  • Install the sensor vertically with the wire upwards, if possible.
  • Avoid fitting the sensor near the exhaust pipe outlet to prevent outside air influence.
  • Ensure the exhaust-gas passage opposite the sensor is free of leaks to prevent leak-air effects.
  • Protect the sensor against condensation water.
  • The sensor must not be painted or treated with wax. Use only the recommended grease for lubricating the thread.
  • Further application hints can be found in the offer drawing on the Bosch Motorsport homepage.
