DIN-Rail Mounting
The metal DIN-rail kit is fixed to the back panel. Mount on corrosion-free rails meeting EN 60715 standard.
Installation:
- Insert the upper lip of the DIN rail into the DIN-rail mounting kit.
- Press the EDS-G512E-8PoE series towards the DIN rail until it snaps into place.
Removal:
- Pull down the latch on the mounting kit with a screwdriver.
- Slightly pull the EDS-G512E-8PoE series forward and lift up to remove it from the DIN rail.
Wall Mounting (Optional)
For wall mounting:
- Remove the aluminum DIN rail attachment plate from the rear panel.
- Attach the wall mount plates with M3 screws.
- Use the unit with attached plates as a guide to mark screw locations. Ensure screw heads are less than 6.0 mm in diameter and shafts are less than 3.5 mm in diameter.
- Note: Before tightening, check screw suitability by inserting through keyhole apertures. Do not screw fully in; leave ~2 mm gap.
- Once screws are fixed, insert screw heads through wide parts of keyhole apertures, slide the unit downwards, and tighten screws for stability.
Wiring Requirements
WARNING: Do not disconnect modules or wires unless power is switched off or the area is non-hazardous. Devices must be connected to the supply voltage shown on the type plate and designed for Safety Extra-Low Voltage (SELV) in compliance with IEC950/EN60950/VDE0805.
ATTENTION: This is a built-in type unit. The enclosing equipment must comply with fire enclosure regulations (e.g., IEC 60950/EN60950).
ATTENTION: Safety First! Disconnect power before installing/wiring. Calculate maximum current for each wire and observe electrical codes. Overcurrent can cause overheating and damage.
Guidelines:
- Use separate paths for power and device wiring. If paths cross, they must be perpendicular.
- Do not run signal/communications wiring and power wiring in the same conduit. Route wires with different signal characteristics separately to avoid interference.
- Bundle wires with similar electrical characteristics together.
- Separate input wiring from output wiring.
- Label all wiring to devices.
Grounding
Grounding and wire routing limit noise from electromagnetic interference (EMI). Run the ground connection from the ground screw to the grounding surface before connecting devices.
ATTENTION: This product is intended for mounting on a well-grounded surface, such as a metal panel.
Wiring the Relay Contact
The EDS-G512E-8PoE series has one set of relay output using two contacts on the top panel's terminal block. The FAULT contacts detect user-configured events. An open circuit occurs when an event is triggered; a closed circuit occurs otherwise.
Wiring the Redundant Power Inputs
The unit has two power inputs (Power Input 1 and Power Input 2). Wiring involves:
- Inserting negative/positive DC wires into the V-/V+ terminals.
- Tightening wire-clamp screws with a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Inserting the plastic terminal block connector into the receptor on the top panel.
Wiring the Digital Inputs (DI)
The unit has one set of digital input (DI) using two contacts on a 4-pin terminal block. Wiring involves:
- Inserting negative (ground)/positive DI wires into the /I terminals.
- Tightening wire-clamp screws with a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Inserting the plastic terminal block connector into the receptor on the top panel.
Communication Connections
Each EDS-G512E-8PoE series switch supports four types of communication ports:
- 1 x USB console port (Type B connector)
- 1 x USB storage port (Type A connector)
- 8 x 10/100/1000BaseT(X) Ethernet ports
- 4 x 100/1000Base SFP slots
USB Console Connection
Connect the Type B USB console port on the top panel to your PC's USB port using the provided USB cable. Install the USB driver and use a console terminal program (e.g., Moxa PComm Terminal Emulator) for configuration.
USB Console Port (Type B Connector) Pinouts:
Pin | Description |
---|---|
1 | D- (Data -) |
2 | VCC (+5V) |
3 | D+ (Data+) |
4 | GND (Ground) |
USB Storage Connection
The Type A USB storage port on the front panel can be used with the Moxa ABC-02-USB-T for configuration backup, firmware upgrade, or system log file backup.
ABC-02-USB Installation:
Plug the ABC-02-USB into the USB storage port. Securing the ABC-02-USB on the wall with an M4 screw is suggested.
USB Storage Port (Type A Connector) Pinouts:
Pin | Description |
---|---|
1 | VCC (+5V) |
2 | D- (Data -) |
3 | D+ (Data+) |
4 | GND (Ground) |
1000BaseT Ethernet Port Connection
1000BaseT data is transmitted on differential TRD+/- signal pairs over copper wires.
MDI/MDI-X Port Pinouts:

6 | TRD(1)- |
7 | TRD(3)+ |
8 | TRD(3)- |
100/1000BaseSFP (mini-GBIC) Fiber Port
These ports require 100M or 1G mini-GBIC fiber transceivers. The concept involves using two optical lines for full-duplex transmission: Tx from device I to Rx of device II, and Rx from device I to Tx of device II.
LC-Port Pinouts: Diagram shows Tx and Rx ports.
LC-Port to LC-Port Cable Wiring: Diagram shows A-to-A and B-to-B connections.
ATTENTION: This is a Class 1 Laser/LED product. Do not stare directly into the Laser Beam.
Reset Button
The Reset Button has two functions:
- Factory Reset: Press and hold for 5 seconds. The STATE LED blinks once per second, then rapidly when defaults are loaded.
- ABC-02-USB Backup: When ABC-02-USB is connected, pressing the button backs up system configuration and event logs.
NOTE: Do NOT power off the Ethernet switch when loading default settings.
Turbo Ring DIP Switch Settings
The EDS-G512E-8PoE series uses the proprietary Turbo Ring protocol for enhanced network reliability and faster recovery times (less than 300 ms for Turbo Ring, 50 ms for Turbo Ring V2).
Four Hardware DIP Switches on the top panel configure Turbo Ring settings.
NOTE: Refer to the Communication Redundancy User's Manual for detailed information on Turbo Ring and Turbo Ring V2 settings.
EDS-G512E-8PoE Series DIP Switches
The default setting for each DIP Switch is OFF. The following tables describe the effect of setting DIP Switches to the ON position.
"Turbo Ring" DIP Switch Settings
DIP 1 | DIP 2 | DIP 3 | DIP 4 |
---|---|---|---|
Reserved for future use. | ON: Enables this EDS as the Ring Master. OFF: This EDS will not be the Ring Master. |

ON: Activates DIP switch 2 and 3 to configure "Turbo Ring" settings. OFF: DIP switch 1, 2, and 3 will be disabled. |
"Turbo Ring V2" DIP Switch Settings
DIP 1 | DIP 2 | DIP 3 | DIP 4 |
---|---|---|---|
ON: Enables the default "Ring Coupling (backup)" port when DIP switch 3 is already enabled. OFF: Enables the default "Ring Coupling (primary)" port when DIP switch 3 is already enabled. |
ON: Enables this EDS as the Ring Master. OFF: This EDS will not be the Ring Master. |
ON: Enables the default "Ring Coupling" port. OFF: Do not use this EDS as a ring coupler. |
ON: Activates DIP switch 1, 2, and 3 to configure "Turbo Ring V2" settings. OFF: DIP switch 1, 2, and 3 will be disabled. |
NOTE: You must enable the Turbo Ring function first before using the DIP switch to activate the Master and Coupler functions.
NOTE: If no switch is enabled as Ring Master, the protocol automatically selects the one with the smallest MAC address. If multiple are enabled, they auto-negotiate.
