National Geographic Metal Detector Instruction Guide
Setting Up Your Detector
Step 1: Unboxing
Your National Geographic detector requires no assembly or tools. Simply remove the detector from the box. Remove any caution tape.
Step 2: Releasing the Handle
Press down the red UNLOCK button on both sides to release the handle. Caution: Failure to press the unlock button when releasing the handle will cause damage.
Step 3: Inserting Batteries
Insert 4 x 1.5V AA (LR6) batteries (not included). Ensure correct polarity (+/-).
Step 4: Adjusting the Armrest
Slide out the armrest to your desired length, typically just under your elbow.
Step 5: Attaching the Search Coil
Fold out the search coil to be parallel with the ground. Tighten the wing nut to fix the coil position. Be careful not to over tighten.
Step 6: Extending the Shaft
Fully extend the lower shaft and ensure it clicks into place. It can also be left collapsed for a shorter detector length. To retract the shaft, firmly tap on the base of the coil.
Step 7: Adjusting Upper Shaft
Release the camlock lever to adjust the upper shaft to your desired length for your height.
Step 8: Securing the Armrest Strap
Adjust the armrest strap to securely fit around your arm.
Control Panel Overview
The control panel features several buttons and indicators:
- 1) POWER SWITCH (ON/OFF): Toggles the detector on and off.
- 2) EAR BUDS OUTPUT: A 1/8" connector for headphones, located at the rear.
- 3) SENSITIVITY: Increase for more detecting depth. Decrease if experiencing high noise interference or false signals.
- 4) PINPOINT: Use this function to determine the exact location of a target.
- 5) VOLUME: Adjusts the audio output level.
- 6) FIND MODE: Allows detection and rejection of specific metal objects. Cycle through modes using the Find button.
- 7) DEPTH INDICATION: Shows target depth as Shallow, Medium, or Deep.
- 8) FIND ICONS (x 4): Icons on the LCD indicate the type of metal object detected. If an icon is not visible, that object type will not be detected. These include icons representing iron objects, nails, horseshoes, rings, pull tabs, coins, and screw caps.
- 9) BATTERY LEVEL: Indicates the remaining battery power.
Detecting Basics
Quick Start Guide
Step 1: Power On
Switch your detector on. The LCD will light up with several icons.
Step 2: Begin Detecting
Sweep the coil over the ground in a side-to-side motion. The detector will light up and beep when a metal object is found.
Sweep Techniques
Sweep Level
Keep the coil 1–2 inches (2–3 cm) above and parallel to the ground at all times.
Speed
Sweep the coil over the ground in a side-to-side motion. An average sweep speed is 1–2 seconds from left to right.
Overlap Sweep
Slightly overlap the previous sweep to ensure full ground coverage.
Detector Handling
Adjustment
The detector should be held straight with your forearm and feel light and comfortable when you pick it up.
Space Between Users
Space
Recommended distance is 50 feet (15 m) apart when multiple users are scanning an area.
Searching Modes
Icon Descriptions
When a metal object is detected, the corresponding icon will flash on the control panel to indicate the target type. If the icon is turned off (not visible), then these object types will not be detected.
- Example 1: Iron objects, nails, and horseshoes.
- Example 2: Rings, pull tabs, and lower value coins.
- Example 3: Aluminum foil and lower value coins.
- Example 4: Low and high value coins and screw caps.
Find Modes
Cycle through the different modes using the Find button. Find modes allow you to search for specific groups of metal objects by accepting or rejecting detection. No need to dig the trash – just the treasure!
Select from 3 find modes:
- Mode 1: Beeps at all metal.
- Mode 2: Ignores iron objects.
- Mode 3: Ignores iron and aluminum objects.
Detector Sounds
The detector beeps at different tones depending on which object is found. There are 3 different audio tones:
- High Tone: Silver and copper targets produce the highest tone.
- Mid Tone: Metals produce a medium tone.
- Low Tone: Iron targets (such as nails) produce the lowest tone.
