Controls and Connections

The SUB-TS7 features several controls and connection points on its rear panel:

  • 1. Subwoofer-Level Control: This knob adjusts the subwoofer's volume. Turn clockwise to increase volume, counterclockwise to decrease.
  • 2. High-Cut (Low-Pass) Filter Switch: When set to 'ON', this switch limits audio input signals to frequencies below 120Hz, allowing the subwoofer to focus on low frequencies and avoid distortion. It has no effect when the SUB Input (5) is used.
  • 3. Music-Sense On/Off Switch: In 'AUTO' mode, the subwoofer automatically turns on when it senses an audio signal and enters standby when no signal is detected. The LED indicator is blue when receiving a signal and amber when in standby. In 'ON' mode, the subwoofer remains powered on regardless of signal presence, and the LED indicator stays blue.
  • 4. Phase Switch: This switch determines if the subwoofer's piston action is in phase with the main speakers. 'NORMAL' is the default position. 'REVERSE' can be used if bass response seems diminished due to phase cancellation. Experimentation is recommended.
  • 5. Line-Level Subwoofer (SUB) Input: Connect the subwoofer output from a receiver with digital surround sound decoding (like Dolby Digital or DTS) to this input. This bypasses the SUB-TS7's internal crossover. Use only with a filtered signal.
  • 6. Line-Level Full-Range Inputs: Connect the line-level subwoofer or preamp outputs from your receiver/amplifier to these inputs. If your receiver lacks a dedicated subwoofer output, a Y-adapter may be needed. If only a single output is available, connect it to either the left or right input.
  • 7. Speaker-Level Outputs: Use these binding posts to connect the SUB-TS7 to your front left and right speakers when using the Speaker-Level Inputs (8). Ensure correct polarity (+ to +, - to -).
  • 8. Speaker-Level Inputs: Connect these binding posts to your receiver/amplifier's front left and right speaker terminals if your receiver lacks a line-level subwoofer output. Maintain correct polarity.
  • 9. Master Power Switch: This switch turns the unit ON ('•') or OFF.
  • 10. AC Power Cord: Connects the subwoofer to a mains power outlet. Ensure it's plugged into an unswitched outlet.

LED Indicator: Located on top of the subwoofer. Blue indicates an audio signal is present (Music-Sense in AUTO mode). Amber indicates standby mode (Music-Sense in AUTO mode). The LED is off when the Master Power Switch is OFF.

Speaker Connections

The SUB-TS7 can be connected using different methods depending on your receiver/processor:

Dolby Digital or DTS (Line-Level) Connection

For Dolby Digital, DTS, or other digital surround processors:

  • Connect the receiver's or amplifier's SUB/LFE output to the SUB-TS7's SUB Input (5).
  • Connect each speaker to its corresponding speaker terminals on the receiver/amplifier.
  • Ensure your surround sound processor is configured for "Subwoofer On" and front, center, and surround speakers are set to "Small."
  • Plug the AC power cord into an outlet.

Dolby Pro Logic (Non-Digital) – Line Level Connection

For Dolby Pro Logic applications where the receiver/processor has a subwoofer output or a volume-controlled preamp level output:

  • Connect the receiver's or amplifier's subwoofer output (or preamp output) to the SUB-TS7's Line-Level Full-Range Inputs (6). Use both L/R inputs if available. A Y-adapter may be needed if bridging a single output.
  • Important: Do not use the SUB Input (5) with Dolby Pro Logic processors.
  • If your receiver has a built-in low-pass crossover filter, you may use the SUB Input (5) to bypass the SUB-TS7's internal crossover.
  • Connect speakers to the receiver/amplifier.
  • Configure the surround sound processor for "Subwoofer On" and set speakers to "Small."
  • Plug the AC power cord into an outlet.

Dolby Pro Logic (Non-Digital) – Speaker Level Connection

For Dolby Pro Logic applications where the receiver/processor does not have a subwoofer output or a volume-controlled preamp level output:

  • Connect your receiver/amplifier's front left and right speaker terminals to the SUB-TS7's Speaker-Level Inputs (8, marked "High Level In").
  • Connect the SUB-TS7's Speaker-Level Outputs (7, marked "High Level Out") to your front left and right speakers, maintaining correct polarity (+ to +, - to -).
  • Connect your receiver/amplifier's center and surround speakers to their respective terminals on the receiver/amplifier and speakers.
  • Plug the AC power cord into an outlet.

Operation

Powering On: Set the Master Power Switch (9) to the '•' (On) position. The SUB-TS7 will automatically turn on or enter standby mode based on the Music-Sense On/Off Switch (3) setting and whether an audio signal is present.

  • Standby Mode: If the receiver/amplifier is off or not sending a signal, and Music-Sense is in 'AUTO', the subwoofer enters standby mode. The LED indicator turns amber.
  • Active Mode: When an audio signal is detected (with Music-Sense in 'AUTO'), the subwoofer turns on, and the LED indicator turns blue.
  • Auto Standby: If no signal is sensed for approximately 20 minutes, the subwoofer will automatically enter standby mode.
  • Always On: If the Music-Sense On/Off Switch (3) is set to 'ON', the subwoofer remains powered on regardless of signal presence, and the LED indicator stays blue.
  • Powering Off: For extended periods of non-use, switch the Master Power Switch (9) to the OFF position.

Volume Adjustment: Use the Subwoofer-Level Control (1) to adjust the volume. Turn clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease.

Additional Bass Adjustments:

  • Phase Switch (4): Typically set to 'NORMAL'. If bass response seems weak or out of phase with main speakers, try setting it to 'REVERSE'. Experimentation is encouraged.
  • High-Cut (Low-Pass) Filter Switch (2): This switch limits the audio signal to frequencies the subwoofer reproduces best. It should generally be left in the 'ON' position. Set to 'OFF' only if using the SUB Input (5) or if your receiver has its own low-pass filter for the subwoofer output.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Solution
If there is no sound from any of the speakers:
  • Check that the receiver/amplifier is on and a source is playing.
  • Ensure the powered subwoofer is plugged in and its Master Power Switch is switched ON ('•').
  • Verify all wire and connection integrity between the receiver/amplifier and speakers.
  • Inspect speaker wires for fraying, cuts, punctures, or wires touching each other.
  • Review your receiver/amplifier's operation manual.
If there is no sound coming from one speaker:
  • Check the 'Balance' control on your receiver/amplifier.
  • Verify all wire and connection integrity between the receiver/amplifier and speakers. Ensure wires are not frayed, cut, punctured, or touching each other.
  • For Dolby Digital or DTS modes, confirm the receiver/processor is configured to enable the specific speaker.
  • Test by swapping the problematic speaker with a working one. If the issue follows the speaker, the speaker may be faulty. If the issue remains with the original speaker location, the problem likely lies with the receiver/amplifier. Consult respective manuals or dealer for assistance. Visit harmankardon.com for further information.
If there is no sound from the center speaker:
  • Check all wire and connection integrity between the receiver/amplifier and speaker. Ensure wires are not frayed, cut, punctured, or touching each other.
  • If using Dolby Pro Logic mode, ensure the center speaker is not set to 'phantom' mode.
  • If using Dolby Digital or DTS mode, confirm the receiver/processor is configured to enable the center speaker.
If the system plays at low volumes but shuts off as volume is increased:
  • Check all wire and connection integrity between the receiver/amplifier and speakers. Ensure wires are not frayed, cut, punctured, or touching each other.
  • If using multiple main speaker pairs, check your receiver/amplifier's minimum impedance requirements.
If there is low (or no) bass output:
  • Verify proper connection of the SUB input (5) or Line-Level Inputs (6) on the SUB-TS7 to the SUB or LFE output of your receiver/amplifier using an RCA cable.
  • If using Speaker-Level Inputs (8), check speaker cables for proper connection, integrity, and correct polarity (+ to +, - to -).
  • Ensure the subwoofer is plugged into an active outlet and the Master Power Switch (9) is ON ('•').
  • Check your A/V receiver/processor's speaker setup (bass management) settings. Confirm front, center, and surround speakers are set to "Small," and the subwoofer is set to "Yes" or "On."
If there is no sound from the surround speakers:
  • Check all wire and connection integrity between the receiver/amplifier and speakers. Ensure wires are not frayed, cut, punctured, or touching each other.
  • Review your receiver/processor's operation and surround sound features.
  • Confirm the movie or TV show is recorded in a surround sound mode and that your receiver/processor supports it.
  • For Dolby Digital or DTS modes, ensure the surround speakers are enabled in your receiver/processor settings.
  • Verify the DVD player and disc jacket confirm the desired Dolby Digital or DTS mode and that it's selected correctly via the player's and disc's menus.

Test Set Up and Procedure

Equipment Needed:

  • Function/signal generator/sweep generator
  • Integrated Amplifier
  • Multimeter
  • Speaker cables

Initial Control Settings:

  • Power Switch: OFF
  • Filter: OFF
  • Level: MIN (Full Counter-Clockwise)
  • Phase, Auto/On switches: Do not matter for initial setup.

General Unit Function (UUT = Unit Under Test):

  1. Connect a line-level (RCA) cable from the signal generator to the Subwoofer Line Level Input jacks (L/R) on the UUT. If using a mono source, a Y-cable may be necessary to connect to both inputs. Do not use the single, purple SUB input.
  2. Turn on the signal generator and adjust its output to 75mV at 50 Hz.
  3. Plug in the UUT and turn its power switch ON. Set the LEVEL control to its maximum (full clockwise) position.
  4. The LED indicator on top of the UUT should change from Amber to Blue. You should hear and feel immediate, vigorous bass response from the port tube opening.
  5. Turn off the signal generator, set the LEVEL control to its minimum (full counter-clockwise) position, and disconnect the RCA cable.
  6. Connect a pair of speaker cables to the Speaker Level input terminals (IN) on the UUT. Connect these cables to an integrated amplifier that is being fed by the signal generator.
  7. Turn on the signal generator and adjust its output so that the speaker level input at the amplifier is 1.6V at 50 Hz. Set the LEVEL control on the UUT to its maximum (full clockwise) position.
  8. The LED indicator should change from Amber to Blue. You should hear and feel immediate, vigorous bass response from the port tube opening.

Sweep Function:

  1. Follow steps 6-8 above, using a sweep generator as the signal source.
  2. Sweep the generator from 20Hz to 300Hz. Listen carefully to the cabinet and drivers for any rattles, clicks, buzzes, or other unusual noises. If any are detected, remove the woofers and test them individually.

Driver Function:

  1. Remove the woofer from the cabinet and detach the positive (+) and negative (-) wire clips.
  2. Check the DC resistance of the woofer. It should be 3.0 ohms ±10%.
  3. Connect a pair of speaker cables to the driver terminals. These cables should be connected to an integrated amplifier that is fed by a signal generator. Turn on the generator and adjust its output so that the speaker level output is 5.0V.
  4. Sweep the generator from 20Hz to 1kHz. Listen to the driver for any rubbing, buzzing, or other unusual noises.
