Customizing the ESC & Updates
Due to different racing requirements, it is important to customize your ESC. Customization is done using the Program Card (Sold Separately).
Using the Program Card
To begin, connect the battery wires to a charged battery, then connect the supplied 4-pin wire (200mm) to the ESC setting port (4-pin port) and the Program Card. Turn on the ESC, and the Program Card will activate automatically. The screen will show "Loading..." during initialization, indicating the ESC is copying its current setup to the Program Card. Once loading is complete, the screen will show "ORCA TOTEM" and "1. Program". You can now begin programming your ESC by pressing [Enter] to access Program Mode.
Program Card Navigation:
- [Select Button]: Go to the next setup item.
- Press and Hold [Select Button] for 2 seconds: Go back to the previous screen.
- [A Button]: Scroll up.
- [V Button]: Scroll down.
- [Enter Button]: Send Changes from Program Card to the ESC and overwrite old data.
The Program Card compares parameters within the card and ESC before sending. If changes are detected, you will hear beeps, and the Program Card will display a confirmation. Ensure "A+B-C" matches your setup. (WARNING! Improper configuration may damage the ESC.)
Updating Firmware
ESC Firmware Update:
Scroll to the "Update" menu and press [Enter]. This shows the current ESC Firmware Version. Press [Enter] again to access the SD card's FIRMWARE folder. Select the desired firmware version and press [Enter] again to commence the update (approx. 1 minute).
Program Card Firmware Update:
Depress and hold the Program Card's [Enter Button] while turning on the ESC. This displays the current Program Card firmware version. Press [Enter] again to access the SD card's Firmware folder. Select the desired firmware version and press [Enter] again to commence the update (approx. 1 minute).
Preparing the SD Card:
Format a microSD card using FAT32 file structure. For cards larger than 32GB, use a 3rd party software. Create a folder named "FIRMWARE". Download the latest firmware from www.orcarc.com/firmware/ and copy the file(s) to the "Firmware" folder. Install the microSD card into the Program Card. A maximum of 10 ESC/Program card firmware files can be present in the folder at one time.
Operating Tips
Multi-Protection System
In addition to Low Voltage and Overheat Protection, the ESC is protected in two more ways:
- ESC Auto Temperature Protect: The ESC will automatically reduce power to 50% when its temperature exceeds 125°F (approx. 51.7°C).
- Motor Lock Protection: The ESC is protected against damage when the motor is stuck and does not turn at all. Power will not be applied in this situation. (CAUTION! This protection relies on feedback from the 3 motor wires and ONLY works if the motor does not turn AT ALL. If the rotor has any rotation, the ESC will consider the motor operational.)
- Fail Signal Protection: If the radio signal to the ESC is interrupted for over 1 second during a run, the ESC will cut off power until the signal resumes.
Misc. Tips:
- Connect the ESC to the battery pack only when ready to run to avoid draining the battery. Always disconnect the battery after your run.
- A tiny spark may occur when the battery is initially connected to the ESC; this is normal and is due to capacitor charging.
Program Card Settings
The Program Card allows detailed customization of the ESC. Navigation is done using the four buttons on the right-hand side of the Program Card.

Detailed Explanation of Function Items:
- Running Mode:
- Forward/Brake: Car only moves forward and brakes.
- Forward/Rev: Car reverses immediately when the throttle brake is applied.
- Forward/Brk/Rev: First touch of throttle brake applies brake. Releasing to neutral after braking and then braking again will engage reverse.
- Battery Cut off Voltage: Sets the voltage at which the ESC will cut power to protect the battery.
- Lipo Low: Cut off at 2.9V/cell.
- Middle: Cut off at 3.2V/cell.
- High: Cut off at 3.4V/cell.
- Punch: Adjusts acceleration from Level 1 (least punch) to Level 5 (highest punch) to maximize acceleration with minimal wheel spin.
- PWM (Driver Freq): Changes the forward drive frequency (1K to 24K Hz). 1K Hz provides good low-end punch, while 24K Hz offers strong mid to top-end performance. Experiment for best results.
- Drag Brake: Sets automatic brake force when the throttle returns to neutral (10 steps from Off to 100%). 70%, 85%, and 100% are recommended for Crawl use.
- Max Brake Force: Controls the maximum braking power when full braking is applied.
- Brake Punch: Affects brake feel. Punch 5 provides a direct brake response, while Punch 1-4 offer a smoother, ABS-like feeling.
- Brake PWM (Brake Freq): Similar to PWM but for braking (400Hz to 4kHz). 400Hz provides punchier drag brake and brake force, while 4kHz offers a smoother feel.
- Max Reverse Force: Controls the maximum reverse power.
- Neutral Range: Sets the throttle sensitivity. Typically set to 6%.
- BEC Voltage: Supplies voltage to the receiver (6V or 7V). Typically set to 6V for receiver and servo action.
- Motor Action: Sets the motor rotation direction. Typically set to CCW.
- RPM Limit: Limits motor RPM up to 17500rpm for 2-pole motors. Typically set to Disabled.
- Load & Save: A memory function allowing loading of default settings or saving/loading up to two custom configurations.
Data Record: The ESC can record existing data (Battery voltage, ESC Temperature, Throttle position, Motor RPM) and the last recorded data (Battery min voltage, Max ESC Temperature, Max motor RPM). Double press [Enter] to clear the data; otherwise, Min/Max data will be kept.
