Bulletin TE-SAH
Introduction
The Series SAH SMART Air Hood® Balancing Instrument is an accurate and easy-to-operate air flow hood. It utilizes an included hood stand and wireless communication to a handheld device, allowing a single operator to balance air flow in branches more efficiently than traditional methods. Its ergonomic design and lighter weight compared to traditional capture hoods reduce physical stress. The rugged polypropylene base hood features patented Quad Flow Design Technology for controlling airflow and minimizing back pressure, ensuring superior measurement accuracy. Wi-Fi direct communication provides reliable connectivity up to 200 yards (183 m) between the hood and the handheld instrument. The SMART Air Hood® balancing instrument includes the SMART Air Hood® application software, which streamlines the air flow balancing process using Predictive Balancing's Express Balance mode, predicting optimal flow set points and adjustment order for each register.

Feature Outlines
SAH Hood Components
The SAH hood features a battery compartment, a charging port, a sensor module, an antenna, a pole mounting plate, a power button, and detachable quad flow sensing grids.
Handheld Instrument Components
The handheld instrument includes a proximity sensor, earpiece, front camera, volume buttons, power button, SIM and microSD card tray, microphone, headset jack, flash, depth camera, speaker, main camera, fingerprint sensor, and a USB-C/charger port.
Dimensional Drawings
The hood has overall dimensions of approximately 24.074 inches (611.48 mm) by 24.074 inches (611.48 mm). Key internal dimensions include a depth of 8.909 inches (226.28 mm) and other measurements related to the sensing grids and housing, such as 7.103 inches (180.42 mm) and 5.543 inches (140.80 mm).
Introduction and Safety
WARNING: Do not use the handheld instrument/hood unit for liquid or gas mixtures other than air. Dwyer Instruments, Inc. assumes no responsibility for damage resulting from use with corrosive, dangerous, or explosive gas mixtures. Ensure safe handling when checking air flow at ceiling diffusers. The unit is not flameproof or intrinsically safe and must not be used where an explosion hazard exists. It is not authorized for life support applications.
Note: Observe standard safety procedures when working on ladders and scaffolding. Ensure the unit does not become caught in moving machinery or on sharp objects.
CAUTION: Allow the unit to stabilize at room conditions if stored outside normal operating range. Exercise care when carrying the assembled unit. Avoid people, nearby equipment, and objects that could damage the hood. Turn the instrument off and remove batteries for long-term storage. Avoid excessive loading on quad flow sensing grids; any airflow not through calibrated holes will affect sensitivity. Damaged sensing grids cannot be repaired and must be replaced. Do not disassemble sensing grids during readings. Static electric charges may be encountered in low humidity; use an anti-static solution.
Setup
Battery Requirements
SAH Battery
WARNING: Fire Hazard While Charging Battery. Match lithium-ion battery polarity symbols carefully. The positive terminal of the NCR18650B battery is marked with a wide black band. If a SAH-22-IN (without battery) was purchased, a 3.6 V NCR18650B lithium ion battery or equivalent must be installed.
Charge the unit using the included charging cable before first use. Connect the mini-USB end to the unit's charging port and the USB end to a charging block. Ensure correct battery polarity.
Handheld Instrument Battery
The handheld instrument has an internal rechargeable battery. The battery symbol on the screen indicates status. The unit ships with a partial charge; use the included USB charging cable to charge fully before use. The battery symbol turns red when low.
Installation
Assembling Accessories
To mount the hood onto a diffuser, it must be attached to one of the provided poles. Align the pole's end hole with the hood's mounting plate holes. Insert the locking pin to secure the pole. Start by inserting the pin into the alignment hole opposite the power button. Press the pin's end button to insert or remove.
For shorter ceilings or when using the SAH adapter base kit for canvas hoods, use the stationary pole adapter to prevent pivoting. Attach the adapter to the SAH with provided screws and wing nuts. Insert the short pole and secure with the locking pin.
Operation
Connecting the SMART Air Hood® Balancing Instrument to the Smart Air Hood® Application Software
The hood's LED lights indicate communication status with the handheld:
Blue LED State | Red LED State | Connection Status |
---|---|---|
50% duty cycle | 50% duty cycle | Not connected |
20% duty cycle | 20% duty cycle | Attempting to connect |
5% duty cycle | 5% duty cycle | Connected |
Placing the SMART Air Hood® Balancing Instrument on a Diffuser
Place the hood on the diffuser, ensuring the seal completely surrounds it without leaks. Check all sides and corners. Twist the pole to adjust its length so it supports the hood on the floor. If not free-standing, re-adjust the pole length.
Wired Connection
The SAH can connect directly to the handheld via a mini-USB cable and micro-USB adapter. Wi-Fi is disabled during a wired connection, which is useful for unreliable Wi-Fi or when prohibited. Wi-Fi re-enables upon disconnecting the USB cable.
Airplane Mode
Airplane mode disables all wireless communication on the handheld. It is useful in environments restricting wireless use. With Airplane Mode enabled, the SAH can only be used with a wired connection. To enable: 1. Press Home button. 2. Swipe down for notification bar. 3. Swipe down again for quick settings. 4. Locate and click "Airplane Mode". To disable, repeat steps 1-4.
Troubleshooting
Reported Problem | Possible Solution |
---|---|
No or not changing data | Verify sensor module is plugged in. Check for leaks in diffuser sealing. Verify SAH connection via LED. Ensure quad flow sensing grids are seated and undamaged. Check hood seal. Check for blockages in inlets/outlets. Check for cracks in hood body. |
Reading is too high or low | Verify quad flow sensing grids are seated and undamaged. Check hood seal. Check for blockages in inlets/outlets. Check for cracks in hood body. Check for damage in rubber seal. |
Cannot connect to hood | Verify connection attempt is within proximity of handheld. Restart PredictAir™ application. Power cycle hood/handheld. Check battery status of both units. |
Maintenance
Routine maintenance ensures longevity:
- Remove moisture droplets with a lint-free cloth/paper towel before storing.
- Remove all batteries for extended storage.
- Store and transport carefully in dry conditions.
- Do not immerse the hood in water. Do not use abrasive cleaning products. Wipe with a damp lint-free cloth.
- Do not use abrasive cleaning products on sensing grids. Gently wipe with a lint-free cloth, ensuring air entry holes are not contaminated.
- Periodically check for damage or cracks.
- Take care not to damage or obscure sensing grid air entry holes, as this affects measurements.
Diffuser adapter hood fabric can be wiped with a damp cloth and dried. Periodically wash in cool water with mild detergent and drip dry. The fabric is durable but should be replaced if worn or torn, as this affects measurements. Apply anti-static solution with a lint-free cloth in low humidity conditions.
Annual Calibration
Annual calibration is recommended for accuracy. Send all four quad flow sensing grids and the sensor module to a Dwyer authorized service facility. Contact customer service for details.
Repair
The Series SAH SMART Air Hood® balancing instrument is not field serviceable. Field repair is not possible and may void the warranty.
Warranty/Return
