Bitbox Micro 1.0 Quick Start Guide

This guide provides a high-level introduction to the Bitbox Micro. For detailed information, download the user manual or watch tutorial videos at https://1010music.com/microdocs. Community, support, and firmware updates are available on the forum at https://forum.1010music.com.

Setup

  1. Insert the microSD card into the MICRO SD slot, with the notched edge to the right.
  2. Turn off your Eurorack. Use the ribbon cable to connect the module to power:
    • The narrow connector attaches to the module. Ensure the red side of the cable is on the side of the header with a white bar.
    • The wide connector attaches to the Eurorack +12 V power supply. Align the red side of the cable with pin 1 or the -12 V pins on the power supply bus.
  3. Mount the module into the rack and power it up.

After booting, the Bitbox Micro displays the Pads screen with a grid of WAV files loaded from the presets on the microSD card.

Inputs and Outputs

The Bitbox Micro features 8 input and 8 output jacks supporting the following connections:

A gate signal on an input can trigger the corresponding pad. Connect a controller to the MIDI In jack to trigger pads and modulate parameters.

Navigation

Control the Bitbox Micro using the four white buttons at the top, the two knobs on the right, and the touchscreen. Press the Home and Tools buttons to cycle through screens. Use the arrow buttons to view more or less detail. Turn the knobs to select elements and assign values. The touchscreen supports tap, pinch, and stretch gestures for selection, triggering, button presses, and zooming.

Top Knob: Select an Element

Bottom Knob: Assign a Value

Presets

The Bitbox Micro stores pad configurations as Presets. Several demonstration presets are preloaded on the microSD card.

To Save Changes to a Preset:

  1. Touch the preset name at the top of the Pads screen (e.g., "SL Hybrid Cinematics") to access the Preset Management screen.
  2. Touch "Save" or "File" then "Save As" to save changes. "Save" is disabled if there are no unsaved changes.

To Load a Preset:

  1. Touch the preset name at the top of the Pads screen to access the Preset Management screen.
  2. Turn a knob to select a preset, then touch "Load" to make it active.

Note: Unsaved changes are not automatically saved and will be lost when loading a preset or powering down the module.

Pads

Pressing the HOME button displays the Pads screen with an 8-pad grid. The current preset name is shown at the top. Grid labels display abbreviated WAV file names. The selected pad is highlighted (pink in the example). The top-left corner shows the clock in measure:beat format. A blue bar indicates playback progress, and a white bar signifies that a pad is armed and waiting for the quantization break to start playing.

The Bitbox Micro supports the following pad modes:

Icon Pad Mode Description Reverse Playback Quantize Set Loop Points Play Slices
Sample Use to play single notes or drum hits.
Sample - multi-sample mode Spread WAV files across the keyboard for realistic pitch shifting or mapping sounds to keys.
Clip Use for synchronized loops and quantized playback (e.g., drum loops, guitar tracks 1-8 measures long).
Slicer Use with WAV files containing sections to trigger independently.
Granular Generate new sounds from samples by playing back small portions (grains) of 10-200 ms.
New Rec Start recording a new WAV file or clear a WAV from a pad.
New Multi Start recording a new set of WAVs for multi-sampling.

To Play Pads:

There are three ways to trigger pad playback:

  1. Touch a pad to play its corresponding WAV file.
  2. Connect a gate signal to the corresponding input jack. Input jacks map 1:1 to screen pads.
  3. Connect a MIDI controller to the MIDI input jack and play MIDI notes. Pads respond to MIDI channel 1, notes C2 (MIDI 36) through G2 (MIDI 43) by default.

To Load and Configure a Pad:

  1. Select an empty pad by touching it or using a knob, then press the button to access the Load and Record screen.
  2. Touch "Load" to display the WAV file selection screen.
  3. Use a knob to select a file or directory, then touch "Load" to load the file or enter the directory. Touch the "Play" button to preview. The Waveform screen appears after loading.
  4. Touch the Pad Mode icon (left of the WAV file name) to display the Pad mode menu. Select an option; the icon updates to reflect the choice.
  5. Press the button to display the Parameters screen. Use the top knob to select a parameter and the bottom knob to set its value. Press again for modulation options on some parameters.

To Record a WAV File:

  1. Press "Tools" twice to navigate to the Input screen.
  2. With input 1 selected, use the bottom knob to choose "Audio". Repeat for input 2.
  3. Press "Home". Select an empty pad and press the button to display the Load and Record screen.
  4. Use the knobs to select parameters and assign values.
  5. Connect the recording source to the selected input.
  6. Touch the "Rec" button. Recording begins. Timing can be synchronized with the clock using the "Rec Quant" parameter. Recording starts upon signal reception if "Threshold" is set to "On".
  7. Touch the "Stop" button to end recording. Recording stops automatically if a recording length is configured. Files are saved in a folder named after the preset within the "Presets" folder on the microSD card.

To Clear a Pad:

  1. Select a loaded pad and press the button to display the Waveform screen.
  2. Touch the Pad Mode icon next to the WAV file name at the top of the screen, then touch "New Rec". The Load and Record screen will appear.
